Book The Bacterial Spore

    Book Details:
  • Author : Adam Driks
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2020-07-24
  • ISBN : 155581932X
  • Pages : 412 pages

Download or read book The Bacterial Spore written by Adam Driks and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of bacterial spores spans biosecurity to ecology The first articles describing the sporulation process were published by Robert Koch and Ferdinand Cohn in the late 19th century. Although most of the work accomplished in the past 50 years has focused on the model organism Bacillus subtilis, more recent work significantly expanded the scope of sporulation research to integrate medically relevant spore pathogens, such as B. anthracis and Clostridium difficile, as well as investigations of the ecology of spore-forming species. This new direction is supported by an explosion of novel techniques that can also be applied to nonmodel organisms, such as next-generation sequencing, metagenomics, and transcriptomics. The Bacterial Spore provides a comprehensive series of reviews of the major topics in spore biology that represent intensive, cutting-edge spore research. Editors Adam Driks and Patrick Eichenberger assembled chapters written by a team of diverse and multidisciplinary experts in biodefense and microbial forensics to produce an overview of topics of spore research, such as spore molecular biology, bioremediation, systems biology, issues in biodefense, and the challenge of food safety that is accessible to any reader, regardless of expertise. The Bacterial Spore also encompasses the diversity of spore research, which will appeal to those seeking to broaden their knowledge. The Bacterial Spore is a reference for a wide range of readers, including geneticists, cell biologists, physiologists, structural and evolutionary biologists, applied scientists, advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and nonresearchers, such as national security professionals.

Book Mineral Water Interface Geochemistry

Download or read book Mineral Water Interface Geochemistry written by Michael F. Hochella and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 23 of Reviews in Mineralogy and accompanying MSA short course covers chemical reactions that take place at mineral-water interfaces. We believe that this book describes most of the important concepts and contributions that have driven mineral-water interface geochemistry to its present state. We begin in Chapter 1 with examples of the global importance of mineral-water interface reactions and a brief review of the contents of the entire book. Thereafter, we have divided the book into four sections, including atomistic approaches (Chapters 2- 3), adsorption (Chapters 4-8), precipitation and dissolution (Chapters 9-11), and oxidation-reduction reactions (Chapters 11-14).

In short, an essential resource for environmental scientists and chemists, regulators and policy makers.

Book Kinetic Study of Colloidal Birnessite Formation During Oxidation of Chlorinated Solvent by Permanganate

Download or read book Kinetic Study of Colloidal Birnessite Formation During Oxidation of Chlorinated Solvent by Permanganate written by X. David Li and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of permanganate for the in situ oxidation of chlorinated ethylenes has shown promise in the remediation of subsurface contamination. The oxidation reaction produces Mn oxide, which causes pore plugging and problems in oxidant delivery. This study utilized batch experiments to explore the feasibility of using phosphate to slow down the formation of colloidal Mn oxide, which may allow Mn oxide to precipitate further away from the zone of oxidation. The results show that phosphate can influence the formation of the colloids. Colloid growth was slow, especially early in the reaction. The rate of the colloid formation decreases linearly with increasing concentrations of phosphate ion. Efforts were made to elucidate the mechanism of the reaction between phosphate and Mn oxide. A model was proposed to describe the reaction process, which is thought to involve the formation of a Mn(IV)-phosphate complex in the aqueous phase before formation of the colloids.

Book Methods and Instrumentations Results and Recent Developments

Download or read book Methods and Instrumentations Results and Recent Developments written by Arnold S. Marfunin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All existing introductory reviews of mineralogy are written accord ing to the same algorithm, sometimes called the "Dana System of Mineralogy". Even modern advanced handbooks, which are cer tainly necessary, include basic data on minerals and are essentially descriptive. When basic information on the chemistry, structure, optical and physical properties, distinguished features and para genesis of 200-400 minerals is presented, then there is practically no further space available to include new ideas and concepts based on recent mineral studies. A possible solution to this dilemma would be to present a book beginning where introductory textbooks end for those already famil iar with the elementary concepts. Such a volume would be tailored to specialists in all fields of science and industry, interested in the most recent results in mineralogy. This approach may be called Advanced Mineralogy. Here, an attempt has been made to survey the current possibilities and aims in mineral mater investigations, including the main characteristics of all the methods, the most important problems and topics of mineralogy, and related studies. The individual volumes are composed of short, condensed chap ters. Each chapter presents in a complete, albeit condensed, form specific problems, methods, theories, and directions of investigations, and estimates their importance and strategic position in science and industry.
