Book Interaction of Gases with Surfaces

Download or read book Interaction of Gases with Surfaces written by Alexander V. Bogdanov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-03-22 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interface phenomena are most fascinating because of the mixing of different scales and the interference of diverse physical processes. This makes it necessary to use different levels of description: microscopic, kinetic, and gas-dynamical. A unified quasiclassical approach is used to answer practical questions dealing with inelastic gas-surface scattering, the kinetics of adsorption layers, the evolution of inhomogeneities and defects at the surface, the Knudsen layer, the development of boundary conditions on the kinetic and gas-dynamical levels, the determination of exchange and slip coefficients, and so on.

Book excerpt: Molecular beam scattering techniques have firmly established themselves among the major tools for studying the kinetics and dynamics of gas- surface interactions. They have also proven themselves to be of great use in materials synthesis, most notably being used for the molecular beam epitaxial (MBE) growth of semiconductor substrates and superlattices. During the past few years our research group has been very active in developing new and quite general molecular beam techniques for studying the kinetic mechanisms of surface chemical reactions. We have, in particular, focused much of our attention on extending traditional molecular beam measurements to allow us to routinely explore coverage dependent kinetic mechanisms under essentially linearized conditions. These efforts have been quite successful. Our three molecular beam scattering arrangement is unique in the world, and significantly expands the range and power of modulated beam reactive scattering for studying complex kinetics at surfaces. The experimental methodology we have developed utilizes two continuous, independently adjustable beams to establish a desired steady state surface concentration, while a weaker modulated third beam induces small concentration perturbations around the selected steady state. This linearized approach permits the coupled differential equations which represent the overall surface reaction mechanism to be solved perturbatively, yielding quantitative information about the various kinetic steps which comprise overall reaction mechanisms.

Book Kinetic Theory and Gas Surface Interactions An Interesting Interface

Download or read book Kinetic Theory and Gas Surface Interactions An Interesting Interface written by Carlo Cercignani and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report summarizes work done in the field of rarefied gas dynamics. The main emphasis was on an aspect which is beginning to receive much more attention than in the past, i.e. the mutual relationships between the fields of gas surface interactions and kinetic theory. The recent work done in this area is reviewed and possible developments are pointed out. (Author).

Book excerpt: Rarefied Gas Dynamics is a collection of selected papers presented at the Eighth International Symposium on Rarefied Gas Dynamics, held at Stanford University in July 1972. The book is a record of the significant advances in the broad field of Rarefied Gas Dynamics that are considered to be of general and continuing interest. The articles in this compendium are organized under 10 main topics. The text presents research papers on the kinetic theory of gases; studies and experiments on shock structures of gases; use of kinetic theory for the solution of problems in evaporation and condensation; gas expansions and jets; and techniques and methods applied to the study of rarefied gas dynamics. The book also includes works on gas-solid interactions; descriptions of basic notions of current polyatomic gas kinetics; and observation of the gas dynamic phenomena in space. Physicists, aeronautical engineers, mechanical engineers, researchers, and students in the field of aircraft design will find this book a good source of knowledge and information.

Book Kinetics and Dynamics of Elementary Gas Reactions

Download or read book Kinetics and Dynamics of Elementary Gas Reactions written by Ian W. M. Smith and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kinetics and Dynamics of Elementary Gas Reactions surveys the state of modern knowledge on elementary gas reactions to understand natural phenomena in terms of molecular behavior. Part 1 of this book describes the theoretical and conceptual background of elementary gas-phase reactions, emphasizing the assumptions and limitations of each theoretical approach, as well as its strengths. In Part 2, selected experimental results are considered to demonstrate the scope of present day techniques and illustrate the application of the theoretical ideas introduced in Part 1. This publication is intended primarily for working kineticists and chemists, but is also beneficial to graduate students.

Download or read book Physisorption Kinetics written by Hans Jürgen Kreuzer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with the kinetics of adsorption and desorption of molecules physisorbed on solid surfaces. Although frequent and detailed reference is made to experiment, it is mainly concerned with the theory of the subject. In this, we have attempted to present a unified picture based on the master equation approach. Physisorption kinetics is by no means a closed and mature subject; rather, in writing this monograph we intended to survey a field very much in flux, to assess its achievements so far, and to give a reasonable basis from which further developments can take off. For this reason we have included many papers in the bibliography that are not referred to in the text but are of relevance to physisorption. To keep this monograph to a reasonable size, and also to allow for some unity in the presentation of the material, we had to omit a number of topics related to physisorption kinetics. We have not covered to any extent the equilibrium properties of physisorbed layers such as structures, phase tr- sitions and thermodynamic properties in general. A number of excellent revIew articles, listed in the bibliography, cover this material. Likewise, little is said about scattering off solid surfaces; this subject is again covered in several books and many review articles. Lastly, little is said about chemisorption kinetics, for which microscopic thebries and models have not been fully developed but are still at a rather early exploratory stage.
