Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 32 (thesis year 1987) a total of 12,483 theses titles from 22 Canadian and 176 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 32 reports theses submitted in 1987, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book A Kinetic Study of Acrylamide Acrylic Acid Copolymerization

Download or read book A Kinetic Study of Acrylamide Acrylic Acid Copolymerization written by Muhammad Haque and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homo- and co-polymers of acrylamide (AAm) and acrylic acid (or acrylate salt) (AA) or methacrylic acid (MAA)) are important classes of water-soluble polymers due to their numerous applications in fields such as super absorbents, additives in cosmetics, membrane technology, waste-water treatment and oil field operations. These polymers are generally made by free radical polymerization. For copolymerization reactions it is extremely important to know the details of reaction kinetics in order to ascertain the kinetic effects of different reaction parameters, which ultimately dictate final copolymer composition, microstructure and properties. The reactivity ratios for copolymerization of AAm and AA have been shown to be dependent on pH and they also change with reaction solvent. The present experimental investigation has been performed to study the kinetics of copolymerization of these monomers in aqueous and alcoholic media by considering factors such as type of initiator and solvent, and pH, in order to determine how they affect the reactivity ratios of these monomers. Reactivity ratios were determined by non-linear least squares (NLLS) and the error-in-variables-model (EVM) techniques and full conversion range kinetic investigations were carried out to confirm these values.

Book Characterization of Free radical Solution Polymerizations of Acrylamide Initiated by Persulfate Initiator Systems

Download or read book Characterization of Free radical Solution Polymerizations of Acrylamide Initiated by Persulfate Initiator Systems written by Yashu Chen and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In order to reduce the water production and improve the oil recovery of mature reservoir, various conformance control technologies have been extensively developed. Preformed particle gel (PPG), a cost-effective plugging agent, has been successfully applied to block the high permeability zone and thus to displace the water to up-swept zone. A common PPG based on polyacrylamide hydrogel have been wildly used. Identifying the parameters that affect gelation performance and understand how these parameters affect the performance is very useful to predict and manipulate the gelation time and to control the performance of gels. The objective of this research is to optimize the concentration of three persulfate initiator systems and to study the effect of some factors (water content, initiator concentration, temperature and pH value) on the gel performance (gelation time, gel strength, swelling ratio and exothermicity). The four types of initiators test during this research are ammonium persulfate (APS), ammonium persulfate (APS)/potassium persulfate (KPS), ammonium persulfate (APS) / sodium thiosulfate (STS) and ammonium persulfate (APS) / sodium metabisulfite (SMS) initiator system. Experimental results showed that different initiator system will be selected according to the different synthetic conditions. All the factors which tested in this research can sensitively affect the gelation time. The gel strength is scarcely influenced by initiator concentration and temperature and greatly affected by water content and pH value"--Abstract, page iii.

Book Science and Technology of Polymer Colloids

Download or read book Science and Technology of Polymer Colloids written by Gary W. Poehlein and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science and Technology of Polymer Colloids G. W. Poehlein, R. H. Ottewill, J. W. Goodwin (editors) Polymer colloids, more commonly known as latexes, are important in the manufacture of synthetic elastomers, commodity polymers, surface coatings, adhesive and numerous specialty products. The significant growth of the commercial production of polymer latexes during the past decade has been due to a number of factors. First, water-based systems, especially paints and coatings, avoid many of the environ mental problems associated with the solvent-based systems. Second, polymer colloid products can be custom designed to meet a wide range of application requirements. Third, large scale emulsion polymeri zation proceeds smoothly and controllably with a wide range of monomers to produce stable polymer colloids of high molecular weight Polymer colloids are also important in functional scientific studies This importance arises from the spherical shape of the particles, range of attainable particle diameters and the uniformity of their size distribution, and the possibility of controlling and character izing the particle surface. Polymer colloids are useful as size standards in microscopy and in instrument calibration, and as carriers in antibody-enzyme diagnosti, tests. As suspensions of uniform spherical particles, they are idea. experimental systems to test the series of colloidal phenomena as stability and coagulation, electric kinetic or rheological proper ties, and light scattering. In recent years, polymer colloids have received attention as models for many-body molecular phenomena, including the order-disorder transitions and the mechanics of crystalline phases.
