Book excerpt: Kinetic art not only includes movement but often depends on it to produce an intended effect and therefore fully realize its nature as art. It can take a multiplicity of forms and include a wide range of motion, from motorized and electrically driven movement to motion as the result of wind, light, or other sources of energy. Kinetic art emerged throughout the twentieth century and had its major developments in the 1950s and 1960s. Professionals responsible for conserving contemporary art are in the midst of rethinking the concept of authenticity and solving the dichotomy often felt between original materials and functionality of the work of art. The contrast is especially acute with kinetic art when a compromise between the two often seems impossible. Also to be considered are issues of technological obsolescence and the fact that an artist’s chosen technology often carries with it strong sociological and historical information and meanings.

Book excerpt: Bringing a poet’s perspective to an artist’s archive, this highly original book examines wordplay in the art and thought of American artist Gordon Matta-Clark (1943–1978). A pivotal figure in the postminimalist generation who was also the son of a prominent Surrealist, Matta-Clark was a leader in the downtown artists' community in New York in the 1970s, and is widely seen as a pioneer of what has come to be known as social practice art. He is celebrated for his “anarchitectural” environments and performances, and the films, photographs, drawings, and sculptural fragments with which his site-specific work was documented. In studies of his career, the artist’s provocative and vivid language is referenced constantly. Yet the verbal aspect of his practice has not previously been examined in its own right. Blending close readings of Matta-Clark’s visual and verbal creations with reception history and critical biography, this extensively researched study engages with the linguistic and semiotic forms in Matta-Clark’s art, forms that activate what he called the “poetics of psycho-locus” and “total (semiotic) system.” Examining notes, statements, titles, letters, and interviews in light of what they reveal about his work at large, Frances Richard unearths archival, biographical, and historical information, linking Matta-Clark to Conceptualist peers and Surrealist and Dada forebears. By considering the links between technology, movement and contemporary art, the book explores changing relationship between temporality in art, art history, media art theory, modernity, contemporary art, and digital art. This book challenges the dominant view that kinetic art is an antiquated artistic experiment and considers the changing perception of kinetic art by focusing on exhibitions and institutions that have recently challenged the notion of kinetic art as a marginalised and forgotten artistic experiment with mechanical media. This is achieved by deconstructing Frank Popper’s argument that kinetic art is a precursor to subsequent explorations in the intersections between art, science and technology. Rather than pandering to the prevailing art historical assumption that kinetic sculpture is merely a precursor to art in a digital culture, the book proposes that perhaps kineticism succeeded too well, where movement has become a ubiquitous element of the aesthetic of contemporary art. If, as Boris Groys has recently suggested, installation has become the dominant mode of art in the contemporary age, then movement in real time with the viewer is used to aestheticise and explore the facets of our peculiar time.

Book excerpt: This publication has been produced on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, encompassing more than six decades of the œuvre of the influential American artist Carolee Schneemann (born 1939). In it, renowned scholars and experts approach various aspects of the artist's work based on new research. Starting with Schneemann's early portraits and landscapes of the 1950s, the book traces the developments that led to the assemblages and painting constructions created in the 1960s. During this period, she combined painterly investigations of the figure with art historical inquiries while incorporating photographs and other objects of personal significance into her works. An early proponent of techniques designed to reduce the influence of subjective creative choices, she resorted to unusual expedients: fire, for example, became a constitutive part of her process. Schneemann's ambition to expand painting beyond the canvas's confines was evident early on, and her explorations quickly encompassed other media and disciplines including dance, performance, photography, and film. She was a leading protagonist in New York's downtown avant-garde arts scene, which flourished in these fields, while also synthesizing different disciplines in the forms of Happenings and events. Schneemann soon became a vital element in the visual compositions that, in the role of artist, she was creating, posing herself the question “Can I be both image and image-maker?” The same irreverent spirit and embrace the sensuality is palpable in her experimental films, dances, Kinetic Theater pieces, and radical performances, culminating in her multimedia installations, all of which can be seen to grow out of her efforts to expand painting. --
