Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kindergarten and Child Culture Papers: Papers on Froebel's Kindergarten, With Suggestions on Principles and Methods of Child Culture in Different Countries In regard to my remarks on the letter to Krause, I will here confess to the votaries of Friederich Froebel that I do not con sider it right that the shady side of this remarkable, indeed this great man, should be carefully covered up by his friends. I think we should honor the truth here as elsewhere, and that by such uprightness we injure neither the man, who could as little be an angel in human form as other men, nor his cause, which will stand, so far as it has emanated from God, the source of all truth. We are much more likely to obtain a favorable judgment from all thought and quietly investigating men, who are not inclined or accustomed to throw away the true metal with the schlag, by such considerate uprightness. Ou this ground I shall never fear to speak freely of the human imperfections of a man who has done and brought into use so much good. Book Kindergarten Magazine Vol 13

Download or read book Kindergarten Magazine Vol 13 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kindergarten Magazine, Vol. 13: September, 1900 There is no doubt that children, even after a certain number of experiences, will be very puzzle-pated in making distinctions, which we determine at first sight, between such things as the ledge of a chimney-piece, a roof, a portion of a wall, the facing of a bridge, and the plane surfaces which are contiguous to them. We can also well understand that a child, even of three years old, and who has some idea of concrete numerical quantities, will yet often make mistakes in estimating the number of objects presented to him._ Is it not the same with adults? We know that to each one of us when we look up at the sky on a fine, starry night, the num ber of stars we seem to see is immensely exaggerated. Here we have an illusion which is entirely mental. An illusion of this kind takes place in a child's mind when it wishes to count a num ber of objects close to each other even when but little removed from himself. That which is true of numeric magnitude is also true of magnitude of extent. A pool of water seems like an ocean to an infant of two or three, and the sea is much, very much-water; but this vague idea of the indefinite is much more limited in children than in adults. (p. When such work as this is done in the kindergarten, we are not, in practice, so very far from the infant school of a gener ation ago (as clearly seen by J. G. Holland's picture of these old-time schools given in his story entitled, Miss Gilbert's while in principle there is such radical difference.
