Book Developing Theatre in the Global South

Download or read book Developing Theatre in the Global South written by Nic Leonhardt and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2024-04-09 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on new research from the ERC project ‘Developing Theatre’, this collection presents innovative institutional approaches to the theatre historiography of the Global South since 1945. Covering perspectives from Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America as well as Eastern Europe, the chapters explore how US philanthropy, international organisations and pan-African festivals all contributed to the globalisation and institutionalisation of the performing arts in the Global South. During the Cultural Cold War, the Global North intervened in and promoted forms of cultural infrastructure that were deemed adaptable to any environment. This form of technopolitics impacted the construction of national theatres, the introduction of new pedagogical tools and the invention of the workshop as a format. The networks of 'experts' responsible for this foreground seminal figures, both celebrated (Augusto Boal, Efua Sutherland) but also lesser known (Albert Botbol, Severino Montano, Metin And), who contributed to the worldwide theatrical epistemic community of the postwar years. Developing Theatre in the Global South investigates the institutional factors that led to the emergence of professional theatre in the postwar period throughout the decolonising world. The book’s institutional and transnational approach enables theatre studies to overcome its still strong national and local focus on plays and productions, and connect it to current discourses in transnational and global history.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE • “A rich, penetrating, and moving portrayal of Arab-Jewish hostility, told in human terms.”—Newsday Now expanded and updated • “The best and most comprehensive work there is in the English language on this subject.”—The New York Times In this monumental work, extensively researched and more relevant than ever, David Shipler delves into the origins of the prejudices that exist between Jews and Arabs that have been intensified by war, terrorism, and nationalism. Focusing on the diverse cultures that exist side by side in Israel and Palestine, Shipler examines the process of indoctrination that begins in schools; he discusses the effects of socioeconomic differences, the clashes of Israeli and Palestinian historical narratives, religious conflicts between Islam and Judaism, views of the Holocaust, and much more. And he writes of the people: the Arab woman in love with a Jew, the retired Israeli military officer now disillusioned, the Palestinian militant devoted to violent means, the Israeli and Palestinian schoolchildren who reach across the divides in search of reconciliation. Their stories, and the hundreds of others, reflect not only the reality of “wounded spirits” but also the healing inside minds necessary for eventual coexistence in the promised land.

Book Worth Dying For

Download or read book Worth Dying For written by Terry Gould and published by Random House Canada. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timed to the 25th anniversary celebration of the RCMP's first mission to train police in the world's failing states, a brilliantly reported account of a year in the life of our "CivPol" missions in Afghanistan, Palestine and Haiti, and an intimate portrait of the idealism and courage our police officers bring to this complicated and dangerous work. Brought to us by the only journalist ever granted unfettered access to these missions. As Canadians' sense of pride in their country's "blue helmet" global peacekeeping role fades away, little attention is paid to the RCMP's International Peace Operations Branch, a unit that travels to the world's most desperate places to help train corrupt police forces in ethical practices. With exclusive access to the Canadian CivPol (civilian police-trainers) units in Afghanistan, Palestine and Haiti, Terry Gould gives us the untold story of the extraordinary individuals behind these missions: the city, provincial and Mounted Police officers who volunteer and the cops they set out to train in law enforcement ideals amidst the entrenched violence and oppression unique to each troubled nation. Gould explores the hope, heartbreak and tragedy experienced by Canadian cops as they try to lend the right kind of help by establishing trust with local cops and civilians against a history of Western colonial exploitation. And he shows us why the creation of an ethical police force is essential to the renewal of these failing states, and to a peaceful future for all of us. RCMP Superintendent Joe McAllister, a veteran of 4 Afghan training missions, tells the author why he and his colleagues volunteer for such hazardous assignments: they believe in a code of service that is worth dying for.

Book Public and Situated Displays

Download or read book Public and Situated Displays written by K. O'Hara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-12-31 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public and situated display technologies can have an important impact on individual and social behaviour and present us with particular interesting new design considerations and challenges. While there is a growing body of research exploring these design considerations and social impact this work remains somewhat disparate, making it difficult to assimilate in a coherent manner. This book brings together the perspectives of key researchers in the area of public and situated display technology. The chapters detail research representing the social, technical and interactional aspects of public and situated display technologies. The underlying concern common to these chapters is how these displays can be best designed for collaboration, coordination, community building and mobility. Presenting them together allows the reader to examine everyday display activities within the context of emerging technological possibilities.
