Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Future high-lift systems must achieve improved aerodynamic performance with simpler designs that involve fewer elements and reduced maintenance costs. To expeditiously achieve this, reliable CFD design tools are required. The development of useful CFD-based design tools for high lift systems requires increased attention to unresolved flow physics issues. The complex flow field over any multi-element airfoil may be broken down into certain generic component flows which are termed high-lift building block flows. In this report a broad spectrum of key flow field physics issues relevant to the design of improved high lift systems are considered. It is demonstrated that in-flight experiments utilizing the NASA Dryden Flight Test Fixture (which is essentially an instrumented ventral fin) carried on an F-15B support aircraft can provide a novel and cost effective method by which both Reynolds and Mach number effects associated with specific high lift building block flows can be investigated. These in-flight high lift building block flow experiments are most effective when performed in conjunction with coordinated ground based wind tunnel experiments in low speed facilities. For illustrative purposes three specific examples of in-flight high lift building block flow experiments capable of yielding a high payoff are described. The report concludes with a description of a joint wind tunnel/flight test approach to high lift aerodynamics research. Fisher, David and Thomas, Flint O. and Nelson, Robert C. Book Important Issues for Designing High Lift Common Research Model

Download or read book Important Issues for Designing High Lift Common Research Model written by Jer-Yo Lee and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accurate and reliable aerodynamic data even for civil aircraft are often kept by their manufacturers and are not available to the public. Moreover, researchers would like to further investigate about the performance of this vehicle or to evaluate their newly developed CFD code. To fulfil this gap, NASA decided to design and built a model (HL-CRM) of a representative of a transonic civil aircraft and make it available to all researchers. This model has been and will be tested in various wind tunnels as well as the CFD development community. All data will be published, hence everybody who is interested in this field can use the data to improve the understanding of aerodynamics. The University of Washington cooperates with Boeing to build a HL-CRM model to serve as a platform for innovative research and to provide educational courses to students. The first stage of building the model is to consider all the potential functions for our HL-CRM. 17 important issues have been listed by the experts in UW and Boeing. Hence, the propose of this paper is to investigate the 17 conceptual design considerations for designing HL-CRM. Since it is difficult to study all the issues on the model, the priority of the issues is discussed eventually.

Book Numerical Simulation of the Aerodynamics of High Lift Configurations

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of the Aerodynamics of High Lift Configurations written by Omar Darío López Mejia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with numerical simulations and computations of the turbulent flow around high-lift configurations commonly used in aircraft. It is devoted to the Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) method using full Navier-Stokes solvers typically used in the simulation of high-lift configuration. With the increase of computational resources in the aeronautical industry, the computation of complex flows such as the aerodynamics of high-lift configurations has become an active field not only in academic but also in industrial environments. The scope of the book includes applications and topics of interest related to the simulation of high-lift configurations such as: lift and drag prediction, unsteady aerodynamics, low Reynolds effects, high performance computing, turbulence modelling, flow feature visualization, among others. This book gives a description of the state-of-the-art of computational models for simulation of high-lift configurations. It also shows and discusses numerical results and validation of these computational models. Finally, this book is a good reference for graduate students and researchers interested in the field of simulation of high-lift configurations.

Book High Lift Aerodynamics

Download or read book High Lift Aerodynamics written by Jochen Wild and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed look at high-lift aerodynamics, which deals with the aerodynamic behavior of lift augmentation means from various approaches. After an introductory chapter, the book discusses the physical limits of lift generation, giving the lift generation potential. It then explains what is needed for an aircraft to fly safely by analyzing the high-lift-related requirements for certifying an aircraft. Aircraft needs are also analyzed to improve performance during takeoff, approach, and landing. The book discusses in detail the applied means to increase the lift coefficient by either passive and active high-lift systems. It includes slotless and slotted high-lift flaps, active and passive vortex generating devices, boundary and circulation control, and powered lift. Describing methods that are used to evaluate and design high-lift systems in an aerodynamic sense, the book briefly covers numerical as well as experimental simulation methods. It also includes a chapter on the aerodynamic design of high-lift systems. FEATURES Provides an understanding of the physics of flight during takeoff and landing from aerodynamics to flight performance and from simulation to design Discusses the physical limits of lift generation, giving the lift generation potential Concentrates on the specifics of high-lift aerodynamics to provide a first insight Analyzes aircraft needs to improve performance during takeoff, approach, and landing Focuses on civil transport aircraft applications but also includes the associated physics that apply to all aircraft This book is intended for graduate students in aerospace programs studying advanced aerodynamics and aircraft design. It also serves as a professional reference for practicing aerospace and mechanical engineers who are working on aircraft design issues related to takeoff and landing.

Download or read book Secrets of a German POW written by Brian Brinkworth and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the riveting and extraordinary story of Kapitan Herbert Cleff, presented here for the first time by Brian Brinkworth. Cleff, an Officer on the staff of General Wilhelm Ritter von Thoma, attached to the 21st Panzer division operating in the Western desert, was captured near El Dab'a in Libya on the 6th November, 1942. He was interrogated both in the Western Desert and in the United Kingdom, following assessments that led his British captors to believe that he might prove useful to the Allied war effort. During this interrogation period, Cleff kept releasing tantalizing snippets of information about various advanced projects being undertaken by the scientific and engineering community back in Germany, such as the development of AFV tank engines and armor plating and, most interesting perhaps to the Allies, the progress the Germans were making with jet-powered aircraft propulsion, faster-than-sound flight, and unmanned offensive missiles. Every time his captors thought they had teased all the information out of him that they could, Cleff offered another bit ensured he was kept focus of much attention—and away from a Prisoner of War camp. Cleff's explosive revelations intrigued and perplexed in equal measure, and his reputation quickly grew amongst the Allied interrogation fraternity. Despite countless investigative efforts, the truth of Cleff's enigmatic revelations were never able to be fully proven, meaning that the compelling question remains: were his revelations merely flights of fancy or were they genuine exploded secrets?
