Book Key to Salvation the Lamp of Souls

Download or read book Key to Salvation the Lamp of Souls written by Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad Ibn ʻAṭāʼ Allāh and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first English translation of Miftah al-falah, a thirteenth century Sufi text, written by Ibn Ata Allah, one of the great masters of the Shadhili Sufi order. It is considered to be one of his most important works because it sets out the principles of actual Sufi mystical practices, shedding light on the sacred invocations, and associated practices, such as the spiritual retreat. Written in a clear, lucid style, it offers a glimpse into the Sufi world of the 7th Islamic century and allows us to see almost at first hand how the novice was guided by the Sufi Shaykh and, above all, the purpose and preparation involved in engaging in the invocation, dhikhru'llah. Ibn Ata' Allah sets out to define it, to explain its nature and power, to show its results and to prove that it is part of the Prophet's Sunna, or practice. The author goes to great lengths to point out many Qur'anic verses where dhikru'llah is mentioned and cites many noted authorities.

Book Dante s Hermeneutics of Salvation

Download or read book Dante s Hermeneutics of Salvation written by Christine O'Connell Baur and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Widely considered one of the greatest works produced in Europe during the Middle Ages, Dante's La Divina Commedia (The Divine Comedy) has influenced countless generations of readers, yet surprisingly few books have attempted to explain the philosophical relevance of this great epic. Dante's Hermeneutics of Salvation takes on this ambitious project. Turning to Heidegger to provide a theoretical framework for her study, Christine O'Connell Baur illustrates how Dante's poem invites its readers to undertake their own existential-hermeneutic journey to freedom. As the pilgrim progresses in his journey, she argues, he moves beyond a merely literal, 'infernal' self-interpretation that is grounded on present attachments to things in the world. If we readers accompany the pilgrim in this hermeneutic conversion, we will see that our own existential commitments can help disclose the meaning of our world and our own finite freedom. A work of considerable importance both for and teachers and students of Dante studies, Dante's Hermeneutics of Salvation will also prove useful to scholars working in medieval studies, philosophy, and literary theory.

Book excerpt: The author of this excellent book "Prayer, the key to salvation" was Michael Mller, (Germany, 1825-1899) who was a prolific Catholic writer and priest of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. He writes this work based on the precept, to always pray not fainting, which was taught and emphatically inculcated by Jesus to the Apostles and also transmitted to us. In this book he gives a guide on how to pray, and it is packed with inspiring quotes inviting us to pray on a regular basis to keep us connected with our Creator. Prayer is important because man is born unable to remain good and obtain salvation by his own strength; but God, in His infinite goodness, granting to everyone the grace of prayer, wishes us to make constant use of this grace in order thereby to obtain all other graces which we need to be enabled to keep the commandments of the Lord and be saved. Prayer is, indeed, a universal and infallible means for man to keep up his relation between his Creator and himself. Like John Climacus said: "Prayer is the lever of the spiritual life; the medicine of the soul; the light of the understanding; the expeller of despair; the ground-pillar of Christian hope; the solution of melancholy and sadness; the riches of monks; the treasure of hermits; the cessation of anger; a mirror to show the progress in the spiritual life; the thermometer of the soul; a declaration of the dispositions of the heart; a moral certainty of heavenly glory."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luke's narrative of Jesus was presented to Christians who had already heard and read stories of Jesus and the birth of this new movement, Christianity. Luke seemed to rewrite the story of Jesus similar to ancient epics of the history of a nation, a movement, and the tale of a hero. Jesus and the church emerged in occupied Judea, a nation that was not only oppressed but was in exile. Occupied Judea, however, struggled for power and honor and in turn, for marginalized people who needed God. Jesus, the epic hero, journeyed to earth and Jerusalem to free those on the margins of society. This epic story lives on today in a church that also has heard the story of Jesus, but has forgotten that the friend of sinners calls Christians to also reach those who are marginalized by our occupied culture. Luke invites Christians to emerge as a movement that seeks and saves those ostracized by our communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The growing scholarly attention in recent years to the religious world of late antiquity has focused new attention on the quest for holiness by the strange, compelling, often obscure early Christian monks known as the desert fathers. Yet until now, little attention has been given to one of the most vital dimensions of their spirituality: their astute, penetrating interpretation of Scripture. Rooted in solitude, cultivated in an atmosphere of silence, oriented toward the practical appropriation of the sacred texts, the desert fathers' hermeneutic profoundly shaped every aspect of their lives and became a significant part of their legacy. This book explores the setting within which the early monastic movement emerged, the interpretive process at the center of the desert fathers' quest for holiness, and the intricate patterns of meaning woven into their words and their lives.

Book The Secret Success of Marriage

Download or read book The Secret Success of Marriage written by BRANFORD B YEBOAH and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prayer has always been a vital part of Christian life. By studying the prayers of men of God in the Scriptures, you will begin to understand the concept of prayer. The men whose prayers moved God to act were ordinary men like us. Nevertheless, they knew the power of prayer and its benefits. The prayer these men prayed was not ordinary prayer but intense prayer. People who pray with God have a relationship with Him. If you carefully study Scripture, you will notice that the way the prophets prayed reveals how married couples should pray to move God to intervene in their failing marriages. Their prayer demonstrates the principles that can be gleaned and clearly identified, and which, if applied to marital life, can work wonders. When studied, the prayers of these great men who walked with God provide a wealth of insight. The New Testament offers us prayer to which we even better relate. The Gospels centre on key events in the life of Christ, including examples of prayer. These examples do not only give us insight into the heart of Christ, but also give us key instructions on how to pray.

Book Not a Fan

Download or read book Not a Fan written by Kyle Idleman and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastor Kyle Idleman doesn’t just want to be a fan of Jesus, he wants to full heartedly commit to him and be a follower of Jesus. But how can you make the leap from fan to follower? In Not a Fan Idleman uses biblical examples to show how the people who met Jesus also had to decide if they were fans or followers, and what it meant for them to then become followers. Being a follower doesn’t mean that you go to church every week, that you slap a Jesus fish on the back of your car, and that you give to charity. That’s what a fan does. What a follower of Jesus does, Idleman observes, is die to themselves each and every moment of the day because “you can’t say yes to following Jesus unless you say no to living for yourself.” In this three part book Idleman helps you to discover whether you are a fan or a follower, how to recognize the invitation Jesus has given, and what following Jesus looks like in your daily life. With humor and real life examples to draw you closer to Jesus, Kyle Idleman compels each and every one of us to Not Be A Fan
