In the UK the British Army went through its training in the safe knowledge that it had never suffered defeat in Europe. This manual contains all that was taught to infantrymen, section commanders and many junior officers before they were sent to France When it arrived in France the British Army was a well trained and quite well equipped force, capable with the support of its Allies of fighting the Germans to a standstill, which it did in the autumn of 1914. The reason the British Army was so good is shown in this manual, for an army trained to the standards given in this manualt had to be effective. The manual covers both the drill square movements, intended to create the camaraderie and esprit de corps for which the army was famous, and a detailed section on field operations, both attack and defence. Trenches are covered (in a small way), as are machine guns. Of particular interest are the sections covering machine guns in battle, and fighting in close country, woods and villages. The manual is well illustrated with 18 plates and there is a very helpful glossary of military terms.

At the present time the Regular Army at home could perhaps be expanded to about men by the addition of a large proportion of recruits, and there would still be required for our first line about citizen soldiers. This combined force would be insufficiently trained. The existing Organized Militia, if expanded to war strength. Book Training Infantry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Training Infantry Classic Reprint written by John Frank Morrison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Training Infantry The infantry soldier must work more in dependently than men in the other branches. He cannot be led or controlled as can men in groups or close formations; hence he needs to be more thoroughly instructed in the part he is to play. This instruction cannot be given him on the field Of battle. The man who must steadily advance on an enemy in position requires not only higher training but higher discipline than one who does his fighting in close formation, or at long range and out of sight of the enemy and protected from hostile fire by steel shields.
