MacGregor Mathers - A magical grimoire of sigils and rituals for summoning and mastering spirits, The Key of Solomon the King is the most famous, or infamous, of all magick books. It has influenced everything from the revival of magick and the Western Mystery Traditions (tarot, alchemy, astrology, etc.) to fictional works such as Lovecrafts The Necronomicon.Purported to have been penned by King Solomon himself, the book provides instruction for incantations, rituals, and sigils used to call upon and control spirits and demons. Those practicing magick have used it extensively through the centuries, but its true origins and purpose have been lost in the mists of time.No library of the contemporary occult student or practicing magician is complete without this tome. It remains a standard of esoteric lore by which others are measured. This edition includes a new foreword by noted esoteric scholar Joseph Peterson.

This scholarly edition of the Latin manuscript in the British Library was published by S. L. MacGregor Mathers in 1889.

Book excerpt: The Keys of Solomon are two distinct grimoires, or books on magic incorrectly attributed to King Solomon. They likely date back to the 14th or 15th century Italian Renaissance, and present a typical example of Renaissance magic. It is possible that the Greater Key of Solomon inspired later works, particularly the 17th century grimoire also known as Clavicula Salomonis or The Lesser Key of Solomon, although there are many differences between the books. Many such grimoires attributed to King Solomon were written in this period, ultimately influenced by earlier (High Medieval) works of the Jewish kabbalists and Arab alchemists, which in turn hark back to Greco-Roman magic of Late Antiquity. Several versions of the Key of Solomon exist, in various translations, and with minor or significant differences.

Book excerpt: "The Key of Solomon" (Latin: Clavicula Salomonis, Hebrew: Mafteah Shelomoh) is a pseudepigraphical grimoire (also known as a book of spells) attributed to King Solomon. It probably dates back to the 14th or 15th century Italian Renaissance. It presents a typical example of Renaissance magic. It is possible that the Key of Solomon inspired later works, particularly the 17th-century grimoire also known as Clavicula Salomonis Regis, Lesser Key of Solomon or Lemegeton, although there are many differences between the books. Several versions of the Key of Solomon exist, in various translations, with minor to significant differences. The original type of text was probably a Latin or Italian text dating to the 14th or 15th century. Most surviving manuscripts date from the late 16th, 17th or 18th centuries. There is also an early Greek manuscript dating to the 15th century (Harleian MS. 5596) that is closely associated with the text. The Greek manuscript is referred to as The Magical Treatise of Solomon, and was published by Armand Delatte in Anecdota Atheniensia (Liége, 1927, pp. 397-445.) Its contents are very similar to the Clavicula.

Book The Key of King Solomon 1834

Download or read book The Key of King Solomon 1834 written by Frederick Hockley and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1834 Frederick Hockley, later to become one of the most celebrated occultists of Victorian England, translated an old French manuscript into English at the request of the alchemist and aeronaut George Graham. The manuscript was an unusual version of Clavicula Salomonis or Key of Solomon, probably the most infamous book of magic to emerge from the late middle ages. The Key of King Solomon is one descendant of Clavicula Salomonis amongst many adapted versions that appeared in France and Italy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries such as les Véritables Clavicules de Salomon, les Vraies Clavicules du Roi Salomon and Zekerboni. Incorporating details from the seventeenth century Clavicula Salomonis de Secretis and other more obscure sources, The Key of King Solomon describes methods of conjuring spirits, the construction of pentacles and the conduct of the Master of Art and his companions. Although modest in length, The Key of King Solomon is a notable contribution to the growing literature on this genre of ritual magic. The present edition features a transcript of Hockley's English translation with an historical introduction to the Key of Solomon, and a commentary on the text with additions and corrections.
