Among the many affecting factors is the increasing urban population, which in 2015 accounted for two thirds of the European Union population [Eurostat 2018]. Problems, resulting from the increased personal and commodity traffic, require taking strategic decisions by local authorities. In recent years, within the framework of various European projects, the assumptions have been developed for urban authorities to draw up sustainable urban mobility plans (SUMP), sustainable urban transport plans (SUTP) and sustainable urban logistics plans (SULP) [Fossheim, Andersen 2017, pp. 9-52]. Nevertheless, in order to effectively implement transport plans, the city requires a logistics strategy that would allow these plans to be adapted to the city's vision and strategic goals. Why does the tiny island-nation of Singapore handle a fifth of the world's maritime containers and half the world's annual supply of crude oil? Which jobs can replace lost manufacturing jobs in advanced economies? Some of the answers to these questions are rooted in the phenomenon of logistics clusters—geographically concentrated sets of logistics-related business activities. In this book, supply chain management expert Yossi Sheffi explains why Memphis, Singapore, Chicago, Rotterdam, Los Angeles, and scores of other locations have been successful in developing such clusters while others have not.
