Book Ecological Regions of North America

Download or read book Ecological Regions of North America written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a first attempt at holistically classifying and mapping ecological regions across all three countries of the North American continent. A common analytical methodology is used to examine North American ecology at multiple scales, from large continental ecosystems to subdivisions of these that correlate more detailed physical and biological settings with human activities on two levels of successively smaller units. The volume begins with an overview of North America from an ecological perspective, concepts of ecological regionalization. This is followed by descriptions of the 15 broad ecological regions, including information on physical and biological setting and human activities. The final section presents case studies in applications of the ecological characterization methodology to environmental issues. The appendix includes a list of common and scientific names of selected species characteristic of the ecological regions.

Book Guidelines for Applying Protected Area Management Categories

Download or read book Guidelines for Applying Protected Area Management Categories written by Nigel Dudley and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2008 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IUCN's Protected Areas Management Categories, which classify protected areas according to their management objectives, are today accepted as the benchmark for defining, recording, and classifying protected areas. They are recognized by international bodies such as the United Nations as well as many national governments. As a result, they are increasingly being incorporated into government legislation. These guidelines provide as much clarity as possible regarding the meaning and application of the Categories. They describe the definition of the Categories and discuss application in particular biomes and management approaches.

Book Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management

Download or read book Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management written by Jason Link and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-10-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responsible fisheries management is of increasing interest to the scientific community, resource managers, policy makers, stakeholders and the general public. Focusing solely on managing one species of fish stock at a time has become less of a viable option in addressing the problem. Incorporating more holistic considerations into fisheries management by addressing the trade-offs among the range of issues involved, such as ecological principles, legal mandates and the interests of stakeholders, will hopefully challenge and shift the perception that doing ecosystem-based fisheries management is unfeasible. Demonstrating that EBFM is in fact feasible will have widespread impact, both in US and international waters. Using case studies, underlying philosophies and analytical approaches, this book brings together a range of interdisciplinary topics surrounding EBFM and considers these simultaneously, with an aim to provide tools for successful implementation and to further the debate on EBFM, ultimately hoping to foster enhanced living marine resource management.

Book Marine Protected Area Network Planning in the Western Arctic Bioregion

Download or read book Marine Protected Area Network Planning in the Western Arctic Bioregion written by Robert Hodgson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to meet Canada's obligations to the United Nations (UN) Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), creation of a Marine Protected Areas Network (MPAN) following UN stipulated steps is required. This paper details the completion of step two from the UN CBD, which, in short, calls for marine areas to be biogeographically classified (hereafter referred to as eco-units) reflecting the types and diversity of ecosystems. In this paper, we created a systematic approach to biogeographic classification based on available data, prioritization of information inputs based on use and citations in the literature, as well as results from several previous classifications by others, all combined using GIS based mapping and analysis.

Book Thriving on Our Changing Planet A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space

Download or read book Thriving on Our Changing Planet A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-06-18 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We live on a dynamic Earth shaped by both natural processes and the impacts of humans on their environment. It is in our collective interest to observe and understand our planet, and to predict future behavior to the extent possible, in order to effectively manage resources, successfully respond to threats from natural and human-induced environmental change, and capitalize on the opportunities â€" social, economic, security, and more â€" that such knowledge can bring. By continuously monitoring and exploring Earth, developing a deep understanding of its evolving behavior, and characterizing the processes that shape and reshape the environment in which we live, we not only advance knowledge and basic discovery about our planet, but we further develop the foundation upon which benefits to society are built. Thriving on Our Changing Planet: A Decadal Strategy for Earth Observation from Space (National Academies Press, 2018) provides detailed guidance on how relevant federal agencies can ensure that the United States receives the maximum benefit from its investments in Earth observations from space, while operating within realistic cost constraints. This short booklet, designed to be accessible to the general public, provides a summary of the key ideas and recommendations from the full decadal survey report.

Book Guidance Framework for the Selection and Evaluation of Ecological Indicators

Download or read book Guidance Framework for the Selection and Evaluation of Ecological Indicators written by Alida Bundy and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Ecosystem indicators have a pivotal role in understanding, assessing, and managing ecosystems and therefore in implementing an Ecosystem Approach to Management. They represent key attributes in ecosystems and are essential for ecosystem monitoring and assessment and are used to communicate findings to a wider audience. With the on-going development of an Ecosystem Approach in Canada, there is an increasing need to select appropriate indicators for ecosystem reporting, ecosystem assessment, and evaluation of fisheries and spatial management. A comprehensive evaluation and selection of robust ecological indicators is one of the key steps in the process of implementing EA and to track progress towards meeting ecosystem goals. The purpose of this report was to develop a guidance framework for the selection and evaluation of indicators for assessment of ecosystem status, trends monitoring, analysis, and reporting. The framework was successfully tested for the Scotian Shelf Bioregion at multiple spatial scales and a final suite of 30 ecological indicators, derived from fisheries dependent and independent data, was selected. We recommend the use of this Indicator Selection Guidance Framework by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) for the selection of indicators for State of the Ocean reporting, the MPA Network program and for Ecosystem Approaches to fisheries and oceans management"--Abstract, p. xi.

Book Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat

Download or read book Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-09 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concerns over the potential ecological effects of fishing have increased with the expansion of fisheries throughout the marine waters of the United States. Effects of Trawling and Dredging on Seafloor Habitat describes how assessment of fishing impacts depends on gear type, number and location of bottom tows, and the physical and biological characteristics of seafloor habitats. Many experimental studies have documented acute, gear-specific effects of trawling and dredging on various types of habitat. These studies indicate that low mobility, long-lived species are more vulnerable to towed fishing gear than short-lived species in areas where the seabed is often disturbed by natural phenomena. Trawling and dredging may also change the composition and productivity of fish communities dependent on seafloor habitats for food and refuge. The scale of these impacts depends on the level of fishing effort. This volume presents color maps of fishing effort for all regions with significant bottom trawl or dredge fisheries-the first time that such data has been assembled and analyzed for the entire nation.
