Book The 1549 Rebellions and the Making of Early Modern England

Download or read book The 1549 Rebellions and the Making of Early Modern England written by Andy Wood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-02 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a major study of the 1549 rebellions, the largest and most important risings in Tudor England. Based upon extensive archival evidence, the book sheds fresh light on the causes, course and long-term consequences of the insurrections. Andy Wood focuses on key themes in the social history of politics, concerning the end of medieval popular rebellion; the Reformation and popular politics; popular political language; early modern state formation; speech, silence and social relations; and social memory and the historical representation of the rebellions. He examines the long-term significance of the rebellions for the development of English society, arguing that the rebellions represent an important moment of discontinuity between the late medieval and the early modern periods. This compelling history of Tudor politics from the bottom up will be essential reading for late medieval and early modern historians as well as early modern literary critics.

The nominal king, Edward VI, is eleven years old. His uncle, Edward Seymour, Lord Hertford, rules as Edward's regent and Protector. In the kingdom, radical Protestants are driving the old religion into extinction, while the Protector's prolonged war with Scotland has led to hyperinflation and economic collapse. Rebellion is stirring among the peasantry. Matthew Shardlake has been working as a lawyer in the service of Henry's younger daughter, the lady Elizabeth. The gruesome murder of one of Elizabeth's distant relations, rumored to be politically murdered, draws Shardlake and his companion Nicholas to the lady's summer estate, where a second murder is committed. As the kingdom explodes into rebellion, Nicholas is imprisoned for his loyalty, and Shardlake must decide where his loyalties lie -- with his kingdom, or with his lady?

Book excerpt: 1549 was the year of Kett's Rebellion, when thousands of ordinary people in Norfolk protested against the enclosure of common land by wealthy landowners. Robert Kett, himself a landowner, changed sides and became their leader. He led them to Norwich where they made their camp a mile outside the city. Within days their numbers had grown to 20,000 and the mayor, Thomas Cod, had no choice but to let them in. Today it might have been called the Norfolk Spring or Occupy Norwich. In this highly original historical novel, Neil Rathmell lets Robert Kett tell his own true story and weaves into it a moving love story of his own.The novelist, Matthew Branton, called it, 'A page-turning read and an illuminating insight into important events in our history.'

Book The Histories of Alexander Neville 1544 1614

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Neville was an English humanist, scholar, author and translator who made his reputation as a Latinist and worked as a secretary for Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury. The book offers the Latin text and modern translations of his De furoribus Norfolciensium Ketto Duce, Norwicus, and Ad Walliae proceres apologia. Alexander Neville (1544-1614) was an English humanist, author, poet and translator. His skill as a Latinist brought him to the attention of Matthew Parker, Elizabeth I's first Archbishop of Canterbury, who appointed him one of hissecretaries. This book presents Neville's Latin texts of De furoribus Norfolciensium Ketto Duce and Norwicus (1575) and Ad Walliae proceres apologia (1576) alongside modern English translations. Neville's account ofKett's Rebellion is one of the earliest and most important sources on the 'Commotion Tyme' of 1549, when England was rocked by a series of uprisings triggered by socio-economic conditions and the impacts of religious change. Oneof the first published urban histories, The City of Norwich offers a unique perspective on the development of Tudor historiography and demonstrates Neville's skill in weaving his source materials into a polished expression of national and civic pride. At the same time, its account of the city's bishops honours the life and work of Neville's patron, Archbishop Parker, who was himself a Norwich man. The Reply to the Welsh Nobility challenges the accusationsof libel that followed the publication of De furoribus and is a small masterpiece of Ciceronian forensic oratory. Drawing on the editors' combined expertise in Renaissance Latin, early modern history and translation studies, these texts and translations are prefaced by a wide-ranging introductory section that examines what is known of Neville's life, his texts' origins and literary contexts, their significance in the development of Tudor historiography and the ways in which they reflect contemporary politico-religious concerns. The translators' preface discusses the role of translations in the appreciation of historical sources, using recent developments in translation theory. Together, these three texts reveal much about the uses of rhetoric and historiography in legitimating the actions of Tudor governing elites, affirming national identity and promoting the Elizabethan Religious Settlement. Book Edward VI

Download or read book Edward VI written by Jennifer Loach and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward VI was the son of Henry VIII and his second wife, Jane Seymour. He ruled for only six years (1547-1553) and died at the age of sixteen. But these were years of fundamental importance in the history of the English state, and in particular of the English church. This new biography reveals for the first time that, despite his youth, Edward had a significant personal impact. Jennifer Loach draws a fresh portrait of the boy king as a highly precocious, well educated, intellectually confident, and remarkably decisive youth, with clear views on the future of the English church. Loach also offers a new understanding of Edward’s health, arguing that the cause of his death was a severe infection of the lungs rather than tuberculosis, the commonly accepted diagnosis. The author views Edward not as a sickly child but as a healthy and vigorous boy, devoted to hunting and tournaments like any young aristocrat of the day. This book tells the story of the monarch and of his time. It supplies the dramatic context in which the short reign of Edward VI was played out—the momentous religious changes, factional fights, and popular risings. And it offers vivid details on Edward’s increasing absorption in politics, his consciousness of his role as supreme head of the English church, his determination to lay the foundation for a Protestant regime, and how his failure in this ambition brought England to the brink of civil war.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kett's Rebellion in Norfolk: Being a History of the Great Civil Commotion That Occurred at the Time of the Reformation, in the Reign of Edward Vi: Founded on the "Commoyson in Norfolk, 1549," by Nicholas Sotherton; And the "De Furoribus Norfolciensium" Of Nevylle: And Corroborated By Office, the Norwich Records, the almost boundless stores of the British Museum, and to other reliable sources of information. I then resolved to undertake a work, - a labour of love to me, - in which it should be my endeavour to collect and arrange as full and detailed a narrative as could be compiled, of the events of that stirring period in our English history, in which Kett and his followers played a by no means unimportant part. Though retaining the word Rebellion, my impression soon was that Kett's great misfortune had been to live before his time; that his efforts and those of his truest followers had been directed, not so much against the State, as against the feudal system, with its manifold extortions; that their conviction was, while the lower classes owed a duty to the higher, the latter owed a duty also to them; and though there was Scripture authority for rulers, good or evil, to exact obedience, - an authority of which the powers that were readily availed themselves, - yet the sturdy common sense of these Norfolk people refused to accept any such interpretation of Scripture, as warranted the few in oppressing the many, as sanctioned man's holding his fellow-men in slavery, and gave up man and his sequels (all he was and all he had) to the arbitrary will of any lord or ruler upon earth And feeling this, I was anxious, as far as lay in my power, to set forth this Rising in its true light, and to show, though Kett is commonly considered a rebel, yet the cause he advocated was so just, that one cannot but feel he deserved a better name and better fate. Book Revolt of the Peasantry 1549

Download or read book Revolt of the Peasantry 1549 written by Julian Cornwall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-05 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1977, looks at the two peasant revolts that occurred in 1549, in the troubled period following the death of Henry VIII. The uprisings reveal a harsh background of economic and social injustice, intensified at the time by inflation. Peasants in North Devon rose against the imposition of the English Prayer Book, and with the local authorities paralysed and the government wavering between conciliation and repression, a general rebellion broke out. Reinforced by Cornishmen, rallying to the defence of their national identity, the peasants assembled a formidable army and laid siege to Exeter itself. Only after three major battles was the revolt suppressed. The Norfolk peasants rose against agrarian abuses, routing a small royal force and occupying Norwich. Ably led by Robert Kett, they expelled the gentry and governed the county on a programme of social justice until they were crushed by the forces released by the collapse of the other risings. These revolts display the deep-seated resentments and injustices felt by the peasantry of the sixteenth century.
