Book Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge Papers

Download or read book Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge Papers written by Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge (Calif.) and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papers about the selenium pollution of the Kesterson Wildlife Refuge. There are books, newspaper clippings, court cases (Claus vs. U.S. circa 1980), maps, magazines and soil surveys. The collection is an excellent source for the history of selenium build-up in the Kesterson Wildlife Refuge, how pollutants affect wildlife, livestock, crops and humans, the premature aging of lakes, plans to build an experimental desalting plant, water allocation decisions of California, the Grasslands Easement Program and some environmental White House Executive Orders. Fresno County farmers wanted to direct their polluted water to the San Francisco Bay through a pipe called the San Luis Drain. Lack of funds and objections of environmentalists aborted the project. The San Luis Drain was stopped in the Kesterson Wildlife Reserve, and dumped pollutants into it. The toxin, selenium, began to cause deformities in waterfowl, which drew the attention of the public to the situation.

Book The Fall and Rise of the Wetlands of California s Great Central Valley

Download or read book The Fall and Rise of the Wetlands of California s Great Central Valley written by Philip Garone and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive environmental history of California’s Great Central Valley, where extensive freshwater and tidal wetlands once provided critical habitat for tens of millions of migratory waterfowl. Weaving together ecology, grassroots politics, and public policy, Philip Garone tells how California’s wetlands were nearly obliterated by vast irrigation and reclamation projects, but have been brought back from the brink of total destruction by the organized efforts of duck hunters, whistle-blowing scientists, and a broad coalition of conservationists. Garone examines the many demands that have been made on the Valley’s natural resources, especially by large-scale agriculture, and traces the unforeseen ecological consequences of our unrestrained manipulation of nature. He also investigates changing public and scientific attitudes that are now ushering in an era of unprecedented protection for wildlife and wetlands in California and the nation.
