Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Keokee the Cherokee Boy is actually a collection of short stories, intended for a target audience of children with adventuresome spirit, approximately eight to fourteen years of age. Keokee is a Cherokee boy who lives in a Cherokee village in the region of Oconaluftee in what is now Western North Carolina. His average day consists of mundane chores associated with farming, gathering food, and keeping the water jar full in his father's lodge. He considers games played by the other children of the village dull and boring and yearns to emulate the daring and dangerous adventures he hears in stories told by his father and other adults in the village. Keokee begins by sneaking off from the village on a grand adventure, is nearly killed by a mother bear, and ends up getting hopelessly lost, only to be saved by an inquisitive River Otter who leads him back to his village. After a brief scolding, Keokee's father grudgingly allows Keokee to continue his adventures, so long as he is careful and keeps his parents apprised of his location. His father also teaches Keokee that valuable life lessons can be learnt from Otter, such as staying close to streams and rivers to keep from getting lost. Keokee continues his adventures and meets and befriends other animals, each of which teach Keokee valuable lessons. Stonega, Keokee's father, is both amused and proud of his son's spirit and capacity for learning, but soon becomes concerned and mystified by Keokee's ability to communicate with his animal friends-something no other Cherokee can do. But something else nags at Stonega, a fleeting memory of a story told long, long ago by his grandfather, compelling Stonega to take Keokee and his animal friends on a great canoe adventure, from Keokee's village to the villages of the Overhill people of the Cherokee on the Tanasi (Little Tennessee) River. The journey will be a grand adventure for Keokee; but for Stonega, the journey will revive an ancient myth and remind him that legend and truth often go hand in hand. It also sets the stage for more Keokee adventures to comeaEUR| For the reader, the Keokee stories will hopefully instill a greater sense of respect and love for wildlife, as well as increase their curiosity and inquisitiveness regarding what other lessons can be learned from the animal world.

Book excerpt: In the anticipated sequel to Keokee the Cherokee Boy, readers closely follow Keokee as he becomes torn between his true destiny and abandoning his rare gift in search of a normal life among his tribe. When Keokee discovered his ability to understand the languages of the wolf, crow, and other forest creatures, it became clear he is very different from the other Cherokee boys in his village of Oconaluftee. The ability, however rare and wonderful, set him apart from his peers in a way he never intended. Recognizing his son's odd gift, Keokee's father Stonega accompanies the boy to the Cherokee capital of Chota, hoping to solve the mystery of his son's ability. In Chota, Keokee and Stonega visit The Old One; the revered Keeper of Knowledge for the Cherokee Nation. He relates the ancient legend of the first Keokee and reveals Stonega's boy has a great destiny ahead of him. The Old One instructs father and son to return to their home, where Keokee will continue his "adventures" while learning the things Hawk, Crane, Chipmunk, and others of the forest clans can teach the Cherokee. Happy for more answers but unsatisfied with the result of the news, Keokee does return home - but with a massive weight on his chest. Soon, Keokee faces a tough realization: his destiny is not his own; instead, it's intertwined with the many people, plants, and animals of the world - even those he hasn't yet encountered. This sequel spins a relatable narrative for children and adults alike. Full of wonder, values, and purpose, Keokee's Destiny is a reminder that humans still have much to learn from nature, but they need to experience it firsthand. The novel teaches young children that when people sometimes fear or hate others, it's simply because they do not understand them.

Sixteen-year-old Jesse Smoke has been studying at the Mission School, but it has been shut down and turned into a fort for the ever-increasing number of soldiers entering the territory. Now Jesse has returned to his home to live with his widowed mother and two younger sisters. All hope lies on the Cherokee chief, John Ross, who is in Washington, D.C., trying to delay the Removal. Then one night, family members are suddenly awakened, dragged from their homes, and brought at gunpoint to a stockade camp. From there, Jesse and his family are forced to march westward on the horrifying Trail of Tears during the long, cold winter months. It's a difficult journey west, and Jesse's not sure if he and his family can survive the journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The knowledge of the Little People of the Cherokee has been handed down by word of mouth from countless generations of the past. Even now in our modern times, there still are stories being told of the Little People. The entire Cherokee Nation, including Eastern Cherokees and Western Cherokees, call the Little People in their language, Yunwi Tsunsdi. The purpose in the life of the Little People is to be helpful to all people, especially children. They love children and are very protective of them. They have what is called in the English language, responsibilities, given to them by the Great Creator. They are sent out to all tribes of people to help in times of need. The Irish in Ireland have their Leprechauns, and we Cherokee have our Little People. This ancient oral history of the Cherokees is presented in hopes of preservation and influence for the younger generations, who are gradually distanced from the cultural aspects of the past that so define them. Recapture this Cherokee oral tradition in The Adventures of Turtle Boy and Beaver Girl.

Book excerpt: The story of Sequoyah is the tale of an ordinary man with an extraordinary idea—to create a writing system for the Cherokee Indians and turn his people into a nation of readers and writers. The task he set for himself was daunting. Sequoyah knew no English and had no idea how to capture speech on paper. But slowly and painstakingly, ignoring the hoots and jibes of his neighbors and friends, he worked out a system that surprised the Cherokee Nation—and the world of the 1820s—with its beauty and simplicity. James Rumford’s Sequoyah is a poem to celebrate literacy, a song of a people’s struggle to stand tall and proud.
