Book Kenya s Dairy Value Chain Analysis and Its Competitive Advantage

Download or read book Kenya s Dairy Value Chain Analysis and Its Competitive Advantage written by Phyllis Muthoni Muturi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-06 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dairy Industry in Kenya promotes human nutrition, reduces poverty and creates job opportunities to those people in the dairy value chain. Dairy companies perform various activities in the milk value chain which include; milk collection, cooling and bulking, transportation, processing, packaging and marketing the end products. These activities contribute significantly to the cost of milk and therefore the need to enhance differentiation.Analyzing these activities and their interrelationships assists the processor to find sources of competitive advantage. Milk is a perishable product and its critical handling is very important to the processors. Therefore the survival of any company will depend on its competitive advantage over its competitors. Each company has an obligation to win consumers' confidence in provision of quality product and at a competitive price. This book therefore seeks to examine value chain analysis as a strategic tool to enhance competitiveness in the dairy industry in Kenya. The book also seeks to raise key issues to the main actors in the dairy industry.

Book Domestic versus export led agricultural transformation Evidence from Uganda s dairy value chain

Download or read book Domestic versus export led agricultural transformation Evidence from Uganda s dairy value chain written by Bjorn, Van Campenhout and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2019-11-21 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven by increased demand from both local and export markets and facilitated by far-reaching liberalization and privatization policies, the dairy sub-sector in Uganda has undergone significant changes in the last decade. With a comparative advantage in milk production, the southwest of Uganda has started to attract considerable Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in processing capacity, mainly targeting the export market. As a result, processing capacity increased five-fold and dairy became Uganda’s third most important export product, coming from negligible amounts a decade earlier. In this study, we use observational data collected at different nodes within the value chain to compare the structure of the chain and the roles and economic activities of different actors between export-led value chains and value chains that cater for the local market. Doing so allows us to identify the technological and institutional innovations that both result from the emergence of export-led dairy value chains and at the same time drive further upgrading. Our analysis underscores the importance of milk collection centers, which often take the form of farmer cooperatives, in providing many of the support services that enable other actors in the value chain to produce sufficient milk, and maintain milk sanitation levels necessary for an export sector to emerge.

Book excerpt: Despite a growing dairy industry in India, farmers’ lack of access to organized markets and institutional credit remains one of the major hindrances in improving the scale and productivity of dairying. Using data from a survey of 612 households from the state of Punjab, India, this paper evaluates farmers’ choices of dairy value chains and their financing mechanisms. The study finds that 62 percent of the sample farmers representing 69 percent of the total milk sales are connected with formal value chains driven by cooperatives, multinational companies and private domestic processors. Small dairy farmers are associated more with informal value chains but they are not excluded from the formal value chains. The performance of different value chains in terms of productivity and profitability of dairying is almost on par. Also, there is hardly any difference in the milk price offered by formal and informal buyers pointing towards milk market being competitive. More than half of the farmers borrow credit both from within and outside the chain for dairying related activities. Chain-based financing is restricted to only one-fourth of the borrowers and mostly to those associated with informal value chains. Financing by commercial banks and other financial institutions is limited to only 9 percent of the borrowers, mainly larger farmers. The socially-disadvantaged and smallholder farmers are often neglected in institutional lending because of their lack of physical assets to use as collateral against loans. Value chain approach, due to its product market orientation, can serve as an entry point for financial institutions to improve their outreach to smallholders. The innovative financial products, such as ‘dairy credit card’ and ‘contract as collateral’ would enable them to adopt yield-enhancing technology and inputs and also to scale up their dairy activity.

Book Eastern African dairy value chains what prospects for women in trade

Download or read book Eastern African dairy value chains what prospects for women in trade written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org. [Author] [Author]. This book was released on 2024-05-27 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Eastern Africa, dairy value chains are an important source of income and employment for millions of smallholders, particularly for women who provide an essential contribution to the growth of the dairy sector. [Author] While the sector is rapidly growing, and expanding trade in dairy products holds immense potential for boosting inclusive economic growth in Eastern Africa, dairy trade mostly remains a small-scale domestic business in the region. [Author] In particular, women’s engagement in dairy markets and trade is constrained by gender-based barriers and inequalities, and dairy intensification and commercialization processes have led to uneven outcomes for women and men. [Author] As many countries are increasingly investing in the modernization of their dairy farming systems to spur dairy productivity and commercialization, it is essential that the gender implications of the market-driven development of the dairy sector are taken into consideration. [Author] This report reviews gender issues in the Eastern Africa dairy value chains, with a focus on markets and trade, in the context of broader regional policy frameworks and evolving market scenarios. [Author] In particular, gender policy developments in agricultural and trade policies relevant for the dairy sector are assessed for Ethiopia, Kenya and Rwanda. [Author] By bridging the value chain level into the enabling policy dimension, this study attempts to contribute to ongoing debates on the prospects for women’s participation in dairy markets and trade through more gender-responsive policymaking. Book Value Creation and Opportunity Management in Africa s Leather Sector

Download or read book Value Creation and Opportunity Management in Africa s Leather Sector written by Mwinyikione Mwinyihija and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-08-31 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scope of the study reported in this book entails understanding the constraints and providing potential diagnostics to Africa’s leather sector, which is otherwise globally, one of the most lucrative agro-based industries in the world, estimated at over US$ 130Billion. One of the principle core thematic aspects of the leather sector is, characteristically, its long value chain with multiple socio-economic dimensions. These entail employability, creation of wealth, gender parity and rural development. Thusly, in an effort to stimulate scholarly discussion, the study argues that preemptively, the problems facing the leather value chain stratums are high losses, low value addition initiatives and unexplored opportunities that are synonymous with the Africa’s leather industry. Indeed, the results of the research conceptualized opportunity management as a critical panacea towards value addition strategy for the leather sector in developing countries. In dealing with this concept, the book evaluated the various value chains phases and identified nine specific issues and variables drawn between value addition and the main leather strata. With this background, the study posed a main question and four sub questions to closely expound on related hypotheses and in lieu pursue four thematic aspects: trade, productivity, competitiveness, and innovation covered in twelve chapters of the book. Conclusively, the book manages to successfully conceptualize as a novelty that opportunity management is integral towards developing a leather value addition strategy for the developing countries with particular emphasis to Africa.

Download or read book Dairy Value Chain Analysis written by Wolde Michael Somano and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data came from 180 dairy producing households, 97 butter traders, and 81 milk traders. The crossbreed and local breed dairy farm owner are respectively 67.4% and 32.6%. Farm gate delivery to buyer, own shop and sale to dairy producers cooperative were the major dairy product sale outlets. Price, closeness and secured demand for milk were major factors considered by small dairy holders during the choice of milk sale out let. The first step of the Heckman two stages procedure/the probit model output revealed that milk market participation decision was significantly affected by age of the household head, family size, education level, experience in dairy production, number of cross breed milking cows owned and distance from milk market center. Likewise, the second stage of the Heckman estimation result revealed that marketable milk volume was found to be strongly and significantly affected by the number of cross breed milking cows owned, education level, family size, age squared and annual non-dairy income source of sampled dairy household.

Book Developing Sustainable Food Value Chains

Download or read book Developing Sustainable Food Value Chains written by David Neven and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2014 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using sustainable food value chain development (SFVCD) approaches to reduce poverty presents both great opportunities and daunting challenges. SFVCD requires a systems approach to identifying root problems, innovative thinking to find effective solutions and broad-based partnerships to implement programmes that have an impact at scale. In practice, however, a misunderstanding of its fundamental nature can easily result in value-chain projects having limited or non-sustainable impact. Furthermore, development practitioners around the world are learning valuable lessons from both failures and successes, but many of these are not well disseminated. This new set of handbooks aims to address these gaps by providing practical guidance on SFVCD to a target audience of policy-makers, project designers and field practitioners. This first handbook provides a solid conceptual foundation on which to build the subsequent handbooks. It (1) clearly defines the concept of a sustainable food value chain; (2) presents and discusses a development paradigm that integrates the multidimensional concepts of sustainability and value added; (3) presents, discusses and illustrates ten principles that underlie SFVCD; and (4) discusses the potential and limitations of using the value-chain concept in food-systems development. By doing so, the handbook makes a strong case for placing SFVCD at the heart of any strategy aimed at reducing poverty and hunger in the long run.
