Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " The Battle Rages Higher tells, for the first time, the story of the Fifteenth Kentucky Infantry, a hard-fighting Union regiment raised largely from Louisville and the Knob Creek valley where Abraham Lincoln lived as a child. Although recruited in a slave state where Lincoln received only 0.9 percent of the 1860 presidential vote, the men of the Fifteenth Kentucky fought and died for the Union for over three years, participating in all the battles of the Atlanta campaign, as well as the battles of Perryville, Stones River and Chickamauga. Using primary research, including soldiers' letters and diaries, hundreds of contemporary newspaper reports, official army records, and postwar memoirs, Kirk C. Jenkins vividly brings the Fifteenth Kentucky Infantry to life. The book also includes an extensive biographical roster summarizing the service record of each soldier in the thousand-member unit. Kirk C. Jenkins, a descendant of the Fifteenth Kentucky's Captain Smith Bayne, is a partner in a Chicago law firm. Book excerpt: "Civil War Regiments from Kentucky and Tennessee" provides concise regimental histories of the infantry and cavalry regiments and artillery batteries that fought for the Union from the Bluegrass and Volunteer states. Kentucky contributed over 51,000 white and 23,000 African-American troops to the Union, of which over 10,000 died while in service. Of the deaths, about one-quarter were killed in action or from wounds received in battle. Kentucky raised fifty-five infantry regiments, seventeen cavalry regiments, and 5 artillery batteries. Five regiments (3rd, 5th, 6th, 25th, and 17th) are listed in William F. Fox's Three Hundred Fighting Regiments found in "Regimental Losses in the American Civil War." Tennessee provided over 31,000 white troops to the Union cause, losing nearly 7,000 in dead--744 from combat-related wounds. Nearly ten regiments of cavalry, nearly ten regiments of infantry, and a few artillery batteries mustered into Federal service from Tennessee, despite the state having seceded.

Download or read book Kentucky s Mounted Infantry Regiments 1861 1865 written by Charles H. Bogart and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Kentucky chose to remain in the Union during the Civil War, but far too often her heart embraced the Confederacy. Of those Kentuckians who fought in the Civil War two thirds wore Union Blue and one third Confederate Grey. All fought in the Western Theater of War, soldiering in infantry and cavalry regiments. Kentucky outfitted twelve horse mounted infantry regiments. These regiments, with the exception of the 4th Mounted Infantry and the 49th Mounted Infantry, served their enlistments in Kentucky. The 4th Mounted Infantry Regiment saw duty with the Army of Cumberland and Wilson's Cavalry Corps in Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. The 49th Mounted Infantry Regiment served with the Army of the Ohio in Tennessee. The contribution of the twelve Kentucky mounted infantry regiments has been overlooked by most historians telling the story of Kentucky during the Civil War. This book seeks to serve as an introduction to the military history of Kentucky's mounted infantry regiments."--Back cover.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kentuckian's of the Confederate Army The Orphan Brigade was the nickname given to the First Kentucky Brigade―the largest brigade to be recruited in the state consisting of the 2nd,3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 9th Confederate Infantry regiments―during the American Civil War. Its original commander was the popular John C. Breckinridge who had been a U.S Vice-President. The brigade fought in many engagements during the war. Most notably at the Battle of Stones River where after a particularly costly assault, General Braxton Bragg lamented as he saw the battered survivors, 'Oh, my poor orphans'. This sobriquet was reputedly derived from the fact that whilst Kentucky itself remained within the Union, its soldiers served both causes and the state was represented by a star on the national flags of both protagonists. The 'orphan' appellation was not widely used during the war but, promoted by Thompson, the unit's historian, became popular among veterans afterwards. This special Leonaur edition contains a well-regarded first-hand account and a history of the unit edited from Thompson's more expansive volume. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War changed the United States in many ways—economic, political, and social. Of these changes, none was more important than Emancipation. Besides freeing nearly four million slaves, it brought agricultural wage labor to a reluctant South and gave a vote to black adult males in the former slave states. It also offered former slaves new opportunities in education, property ownership—and military service. From late 1862 to the spring of 1865, as the Civil War raged on, the federal government accepted more than 180,000 black men as soldiers, something it had never done before on such a scale. Known collectively as the United States Colored Troops and organized in segregated regiments led by white officers, some of these soldiers guarded army posts along major rivers; others fought Confederate raiders to protect Union supply trains, and still others took part in major operations like the Siege of Petersburg and the Battle of Nashville. After the war, many of the black regiments took up posts in the former Confederacy to enforce federal Reconstruction policy. Freedom by the Sword tells the story of these soldiers' recruitment, organization, and service. Thanks to its broad focus on every theater of the war and its concentration on what black soldiers actually contributed to Union victory, this volume stands alone among histories of the U.S. Colored Troops.
