Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the spring of 1989, the Kentucky Supreme Court declared the state's entire system of common schools to be unconstitutional-an epochal decision that will have enormous impact on the future of the commonwealth and its citizens. In the wake of that decision, educational leaders, legislators, and concerned citizens struggle to define Kentucky's educational needs and to find the means to achieve them. The Path to a Larger Life, made up of recommendations from a volunteer citizens' organization, offers the most sweeping analysis of Kentucky's educational needs published in this century. Concentrating on the connections between a weak Kentucky economy, high levels of poverty and ill health, historic educational backwardness, and limited financial support for education, the book offers a sweeping set of recommendations and a comprehensive plan of action. Citing founder Ed Prichard's admonition that "it does not do to will the ends if you don't will the means," the book explains the need for increased school funding and increased taxation. The committee's original report figured prominently in education debates that began in 1985. As a stimulant for higher public aspirations and a long-range plan of action, this new and updated edition of The Path to a Larger Life is more pertinent than ever today.

This book was released on 2004-03-02 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA) of 1990 drastically changed the state s entire educational system in ways of curriculum, governance, and finance. KERA has served as somewhat of a blueprint for reform legislation in a number of other states. A literature review revealed that traditionally the relationship between K-12 reform and higher education (teacher preparation) in the United States has not been very strong. Although the connections between the two were unclear early on in Kentucky s reform efforts, much progress has been made in linking KERA to the teacher preparation programs in the state. Some documentation on how the state colleges and universities have responded to the legislation exists. Very little literature, however, on how the private institutions have responded is available. This study investigated the effects that KERA has had on the teacher preparation programs at private colleges and universities in Kentucky in the areas of (a) teaching methods and techniques; (b) course content; (c) student teaching; (d) administrative procedures and policies; and (e) new programs, projects, and facilities.A chi-square statistical procedure was applied to the data. Based on the participants responses, overall, there were no statistically significant differences between investigated. In addition, generally, no statistically significant differences between institutional responses or the responses of administrators and faculty members were revealed.
