Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kentucky's Forest Resources and Industries The forests are made up chiefly of two types oak-hickory and mixed hardwoods. All other types account for 23 percent of the commercial forest area. They include the redcedar - har'dwoods, bot tom-land hardwoods, pine, oak - pine, white oak, and beech - maple. Harvest and Manufacture of Timber. - In 1948 more than 208 million cubic feet of wood was cut for primary wood products. Of this volume 77 per cent represented the cut of live sawtimber and pole timber. The remainder was saplings, upper stems and limbs, dead trees, and wood cut from nonforest areas such as fence rows and scattered trees. Of the wood cut, 46 percent was used for fuelwood, but less than half of this came from growing stock; 34 per cent was cut for sawlogs and all of this came from growing stock; 20 percent was cut for all other products, including mine timbers, fence posts, stave bolts, veneer logs, and miscellaneous farm timbers, and almost all of this came from growing stock. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Kentucky Forests: Northern Cumberland Unit To meet these needs, the Division of Forestry of the Kentucky Depart ment of Natural Resources and the us. Forest Service planned and con ducted a new inventory of Kentucky forests. The field work was completed in 1964. The mcsweeney-mcnary Forest Research Act of 1928 authorizes the Forest Service to complete a statewide forest inventory of Kentucky at approximate 10-year intervals. This is part of the nationwide program of maintaining a current account of our timber resources. The State of Ken tucky appropriated for the current survey. This contribution, supplementing the Federal funds available for a regular survey, made it possible to intensify the inventory. As a result, we can provide the kind of detailed information needed for making long-range plans to meet future demands and in addition help local communities and forest-based industries make more efficient use of the forest resource. Clarence D. Chase, Leader of the Survey Project at the Lake States Forest Experiment Station, directed the inventory. Field survey units of the Kentucky Division of Forestry and the Lake States Station collected the basic inventory data. The Lake States Station computed and tabulated the final statistics and the Central States Forest Experiment Station analyzed and reported the results.
