Book excerpt: Ken dropped out of Purdue in his sophomore year because he wasn't motivated. The leaders of the youth group at Beville Ave. EUB Church, Mr. & Mrs. Wyatt, suggested Ken return to the youth group and said he might be interested in two girls who had joined the group. One of the girls, Carol Fuchs, was third in her class at Manual High School. The youth group had a progressive dinner where you spend the evening eating a meal course at different houses and socializing. Early in the evening Ken said hello to Carol and they spent the evening together. At the end of the evening he asked her to go to a hockey game the next night. Carol said yes. Ken continued to ask Carol out and during the summer decided he needed to return to Purdue and get an education if he was ever going to amount to anything. The last time he saw Carol before he left for Purdue, he saw that she cared for him a lot. Carol asked Ken to write every day and he agreed. Ken liked Carol a lot, but he thought she liked him a lot more than he liked her. These are the letters Ken wrote to Carol.

Book The Life of Saul Bellow Volume 2

Download or read book The Life of Saul Bellow Volume 2 written by Zachary Leader and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume in the life of literary giant Saul Bellow, vividly capturing a personal life that was always tumultuous and career that never ceased being triumphant. Bellow, at forty-nine, is at the pinnacle of American letters--rich, famous, critically acclaimed. The expected trajectory is one of decline: volume 1, rise; volume 2, fall. Bellow never fell, producing in the latter half of his life some of his greatest fiction (Mr. Sammler's Planet, Humboldt's Gift), winning two more National Book Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, and the Nobel Prize. At eighty, he wrote his last story; at eighty-five, he wrote Ravelstein. In this volume, his life away from the desk, including his love life, is if anything more dramatic than in the first. In the public sphere, he is embroiled in controversy over foreign affairs, race, religion, education, social policy, the state of culture, the fate of the novel. In this stunning second volume, Zachary Leader shows that Bellow's heroic energy and will were present to the very end of his life. His immense achievement and its cost, to himself and others, continue to be worth the examination of this vivid work of literary scholarship.

Book excerpt: "Both a page-turning drama and an inspiration for every reader" -- Hillary Rodham Clinton The nail-biting climax of one of the greatest political battles in American history: the ratification of the constitutional amendment that granted women the right to vote. Nashville, August 1920. Thirty-five states have approved the Nineteenth Amendment, granting women the right to vote; one last state--Tennessee--is needed for women's voting rights to be the law of the land. The suffragists face vicious opposition from politicians, clergy, corporations, and racists who don't want black women voting. And then there are the "Antis"--women who oppose their own enfranchisement, fearing suffrage will bring about the nation's moral collapse. And in one hot summer, they all converge for a confrontation, replete with booze and blackmail, betrayal and courage. Following a handful of remarkable women who led their respective forces into battle, The Woman's Hour is the gripping story of how America's women won their own freedom, and the opening campaign in the great twentieth-century battles for civil rights.
