Download or read book Kenana Kingdom of Green Gold written by Osman A. El Nazir and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2001. The Kenana factory was officially inaugurated on 3 March 1981 by the President of Sudan amidst a blaze of publicity. The Kenana concept aimed to combine Western expertise, Arab financial resources and Sudan's natural resources of sun, fertile soil and plentiful water for irrigation purposes in the creation of a mega-agro-industrial project, bringing to the host country the advantages of large-scale job creation, transfer of advance technology and import substitution. The sheer size of the project, however, allied to Sudan's limited infrastructure and the remoteness of the chosen site from the country's only seaport, fuelled controversy, with negative comment the order of the day as far as the world's financial press was concerned.

Download or read book Sudan s Southern Problem written by Sebabatso C. Manoeli and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-04 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book offers a history of the discourses and diplomacies of Sudan’s civil wars. It explores the battle for legitimacy between the Sudanese state and Southern rebels. In particular, it examines how racial thought and rhetoric were used in international debates about the political destiny of the South. By placing the state and rebels within the same frame, the book uncovers the competition for Sudan’s reputation. It reveals the discursive techniques both sides employed to elicit support from diverse audiences, amidst the intellectual ferment of Pan-Africanism, the Cold War, and Black liberation politics. It maintains that the interplay of silences and articulations in both the rebels' and the state’s texts concealed and complicated aspects of the country’s political conflict. In sum, the book demonstrates that the war of words waged abroad represents a strategic, but often overlooked, aspect of the Sudanese civil wars.
Download or read book Land and Hydropolitics in the Nile River Basin written by Emil Sandstrom and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nile River Basin supports the livelihoods of millions of people in Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan and Uganda, principally as water for agriculture and hydropower. The resource is the focus of much contested development, not only between upstream and downstream neighbours, but also from countries outside the region. This book investigates the water, land and energy nexus in the Nile Basin. It explains how the current surge in land and energy investments, both by foreign actors as well as domestic investors, affects already strained transboundary relations in the region and how investments are intertwined within wider contexts of Nile Basin history, politics and economy. Overall, the book presents a range of perspectives, drawing on political science, international relations theory, sociology, history and political ecology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Europeans during the nineteenth century, the Urewera was a remote wilderness; for those who lived there, it was a sheltering heartland. This history documents the first hundred years of the ‘Rohe Pōtae’ (the ‘encircled lands’ of the Urewera) following European contact. After large areas of land were lost, the Urewera became for a brief period an autonomous district, governed by its own leaders. But in 1921–22, the Urewera District Native Reserve was abolished in law. Its very existence became largely forgotten – except in local memory. Recovering this history from a wealth of contemporary documents, many written by Urewera leaders, Encircled Lands contextualises Tūhoe’s quest for a constitutional agreement that restores their authority in their lands.
