Book excerpt: The fascinating origins of Kelleys Island are explored and detailed in this title. Three and a half miles from the mainland, Kelleys Island was settled in 1833 by brothers Datus and Irad Kelley. Formerly known as Cunningham's Island, it quickly built a reputation as a source of fine red cedar and limestone. Grape vineyards, wineries, and a robust fishing industry followed, and Kelleys Island developed a stellar reputation through the 19th century. It also started to attract tourists, lured by the cool breezes and Shangri-La environment. Industrial change and population shifts have challenged the island's economy. Tourism remains as the one constant industry and has now become the principal enterprise. Kelleys, known as the quiet island, can also be called the resilient island because of its ability to reinvent itself. For visitors, the island's 2,880 acres present a complex patchwork of interesting homes, natural and historical marvels, and a lively social life--assets that Islanders have found ways to make the best of.

This book was released on 2009-05-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kelleys Island 1810-1861 - The courageous, poignant & often quirky lives of island pioneers - By Leslie Korenko This is the first in a series of history books about Kelleys Island Ohio. The book is a comprehensive, richly detailed, and surprisingly entertaining history of Kelleys Island, a small remote island in Lake Erie. Its history is told by the islanders, in their own words, gently blended with narrative text. You can read correspondence and letters to newspapers, as well as articles found in an incredible handwritten newspaper-The Islander. The island is now a resort, but 175 years ago it was the wilderness. There are stories of the early squatters who occupied this wild, unsettled and remote part of Ohio as well as first-hand accounts of the building of the Johnson's Island prison and a visit to the soldiers of the 38th Ohio stationed at Somerset Tennessee during the early days of the Civil War. Covering the period 1810-1861 over 160 illustrations.

Book excerpt: Trish Doller’s The Suite Spot is a charming romance novel about taking a chance on a new life and a new love. Rachel Beck has hit a brick wall. She’s a single mom, still living at home and trying to keep a dying relationship alive. Aside from her daughter, the one bright light in Rachel’s life is her job as the night reservations manager at a luxury hotel in Miami Beach—until the night she is fired for something she didn’t do. On impulse, Rachel inquires about a management position at a brewery hotel on an island in Lake Erie called Kelleys Island. When she’s offered the job, Rachel packs up her daughter and makes the cross country move. What she finds on Kelleys Island is Mason, a handsome, moody man who knows everything about brewing beer and nothing about running a hotel. Especially one that’s barely more than foundation and studs. It’s not the job Rachel was looking for, but Mason offers her a chance to help build a hotel—and rebuild her own life—from the ground up.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive travelogue and guidebook exploring island adventures on many of the 135 islands accessible by ferry or bridge in the Great Lakes Basin. The Great Lakes Basin is the largest surface freshwater system on Earth. The more than 30,000 islands dotted throughout the basin provide some of the best ways to enjoy the Great Lakes. While the vast majority of these islands can only be reached by private boat or plane, a surprising number of islands—each with its own character and often harboring more than a bit of intrigue in its history—can be reached by merely taking a ferry ride, or crossing a bridge, offering everyone the chance to experience a variety of island adventures. Great Lakes Island Escapes: Ferries and Bridges to Adventure explores in depth over 30 of the Great Lakes Basin islands accessible by bridge or ferry and introduces more than 50 additional islands. Thirty-eight chapters include helpful information about getting to each featured island, what to expect when you get there, the island's history, and what natural and historical sites and cultural attractions are available to visitors. Each chapter lists special island events, where to get more island information, and how readers can help support the island. Author Maureen Dunphy made numerous trips to a total of 135 islands that are accessible by ferry or bridge in the Great Lakes Basin. On each trip, Dunphy was accompanied by a different friend or relative who provided her another adventurer's perspective through which to view the island experience. Great Lakes Island Escapes covers islands on both sides of the international border between the United States and Canada and features islands in both the lakes and the waterways that connect them. Anyone interested in island travel or learning more about the Great Lakes will delight in this comprehensive collection.

Download or read book KELLEYS ISLAND 1862 1865 written by Leslie Korenko and published by Winepress Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1865 there were just 600 people living on Kelleys Island in Lake Erie. But this little island sent almost 100 of its men to fight in the Civil War. Through the soldier's letters, newspaper accounts and historical documents, the island's development can be explored. Her soldiers fought in the 3rd Ohio Cavalry, 24th, 38th, and 101st Ohio Infantries, the 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery and the 130th Ohio Volunteer Militia. Douglas Kelley was wounded at Libby prison, Simon Huntington was killed in action at Stone River and Jacob Rush was captured as a spy, sent to Cahaba prison where he helped lead an escape attempt and on his return home, was one of the few survivors of the Sultana explosion. This is life on an Ohio island, told by the islanders themselves.

Book excerpt: For those of us who know the area, the Lake Erie Islands are a beautiful and special place that can more than compete with any other islands as a place to live or visit. But much of their history has been difficult to find for a long time. There are many wonderful stories and pictures about the history of Put-in-Bay, Middle Bass Island, North Bass Island, Pelee Island and Kelleys Island, as well as many of the smaller islands, that we have compiled into this volume. The first of six sections in the book includes all of Lydia Ryall's 1913 Sketches and Stories of the Lake Erie Islands - Perry Centennial Edition 1813-1913.The other sections contain a wealth of additional information and pictures, some of which has never been published before. Many footnotes are provided to point out errors in the original material, and to provide interesting additional information. A publication of the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society, the book contains 266 pictures and is fully indexed. Keeping the book interesting to read while also allowing it to be a good reference work has been of high priority. Many of the original pictures have been digitally cleaned up and enhanced, and the material has been carefully selected to be enjoyable to browse or read carefully. We believe that this is the most complete history of the Lake Erie Islands that has ever been published. Please visit the author's web site at http://www.middlebass.org
