Book excerpt: Peddicord (1833-1905) had worked as a civil engineer on the railroads prior to enlisting to serve in the Confederate States Army in 1861. He was taken prisoner in July 1863 and spent the remainder of the war in various prisons until his release in June 1865. In later life he took to farming, followed by a variety of other professions before becoming postmaster in Palmyra, Missouri where he had lived since 1867. He attended nearly all the reunions of United Confederate Veterans, including that held in the year of his death, and at one time served as second in command of the Palmyra Grays, Missouri State Guard. This appreciation of his life compiled by his sister includes a journal he wrote for her at the end of 1865 recounting his war experiences, together with a brief history of the Peddicord family's background and an account of his life after the war. First published in 1908 and illustrated with four photographic portraits.

Book One of Morgan s Men

Download or read book One of Morgan s Men written by John M. Porter and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2011-02-25 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated Civil War memoir provides a detailed account of General Morgan’s famous battles and raids from a Confederate soldier’s perspective. John Marion Porter grew up working at his family's farm and dry goods store in Butler County, Kentucky. He was studying to become a lawyer when the Civil War began. As the son of a family of slave owners, Porter identified with the Southern cause and quickly enlisted in the Confederate army. He and his lifelong friend Thomas Henry Hines served in the Ninth Kentucky Calvary under John Hunt Morgan, the “Thunderbolt of the Confederacy.” When the war ended, Porter began writing detailed memoirs of his experiences during the war years, including tales of scouting behind enemy lines, sabotaging a Union train, being captured and held as a prisoner of war, and searching for an army to join after his release. Editor Kent Masterson Brown spent several years preparing Porter's memoir for publication, clarifying details and adding annotations to provide historical context. One of Morgan's Men is a fascinating firsthand account of the life of a Confederate soldier.

Book Oxford and the Evangelical Succession

Download or read book Oxford and the Evangelical Succession written by Marcus Loane and published by . This book was released on 2007-03-20 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are the stories of five key ministers of the 18th and 19th centuries who changed the whole spirit of the Church of England - and whose influence is still seen today. People today are frantically searching for security and are increasingly not finding it in a material philosophy where other people dictate to us. A church that hopes to transform this society needs to look to those who were enabled to perform the same task in a similar era. Each one of these men was associated with Oxford whilst proving their mettle as spiritual leaders. Each one kept alive and added to the passionate flame of a remarkable line of influential church leaders. No lesser authority than J. C. Ryle placed George Whitefield (1714-1770) as the foremost Christian leader of the 18th century. He, in turn, passed the torch to John Newton (1725-1807). Newton was as a spiritual father to Thomas Scott (1747-1821) and Richard Cecil (1748-1810) and they in turn were the spiritual guides to Daniel Wilson (1778-1858). Wilson launched a missionary emphasis still seen today in Oxford churches. What this book helps us understand is that the situation that prevailed when these men influenced their society is similar to that of today. If we want to change the world then their stories could inspire us to do just that. Sir Marcus Loane has also written Cambridge and the Evangelical Succession ( ISBN 987-1-84550-244-7).

Book excerpt: These are the stories of four key ministers of the 18th and 19th centuries who changed the whole spirit of the Church of England - and whose influence is still seen today. Each one of these men was associated with Cambridge University. William Grimshaw (1708-1763) Christ's College, was a friend of John Wesley who was one of the first leaders of the 18th century revival. He frequently had 1200 worshippers at his church in Haworth (most outside the building!). Even the modern day Poet Laureate, Ted Hughes, felt his influence. John Berridge (1716-1793) Clare College was influenced by Grimshaw and became known as the ?Pedlar of the Gospel' after refusing to obey his Bishop who said he should NOT be preaching to the people in the fields. Henry Venn (1725-1797) Queen's College was also a leader in the Evangelical Revival and the ?spiritual father' of the Clapham Sect of Social reformers, which included William Wilberforce's campaign against slavery. He was also the mentor to Charles Simeon* (1759-1836) Kings College, a founder of the Church Missionary Society and a key consultant for the East India Company on their choice of chaplains, one of whom was his curate. Sir Marcus Loane has also written Oxford and the Evangelical Succession (ISBN 978-1-84550-245-4).

Book Masters of the English Reformation

Download or read book Masters of the English Reformation written by Marcus L. Loane and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book tells the story of the English Reformation. It penetrates behind the facade of political change and acts of Parliament and brings to light the inner movement of the Spirit of God in men of humble heart and heroic faith. Its author believes there was a guiding hand at the helm of the Reformation, and that this divine guidance is most clearly revealed by a detailed study of the life and motives of those who were marked out as leaders of the movement and masters of its theology." "The five men chosen for this purpose were the most significant of those who laid down their lives in the cause of the English Reformation. Bilney and Tyndale represent the movement in the reign of Henry VIII; Ridley and Cranmer dominate the study in the reign of Edward VI. The life of Latimer links Bilney with Cranmer and spans the whole period from the early days of conversion in the Halls of Cambridge right on to the triumphant martyrdoms in the fires of Oxford. The forty years, from 1516 to 1556, during which these men found and followed Jesus Christ were the years in which the English Reformation was cradled and nurtured for the glory of God."--BOOK JACKET.
