Book Kejimkujik Watershed Studies

Download or read book Kejimkujik Watershed Studies written by Cynthia A. Staicer and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kejimkujik Watershed Study (KWS) was initiated in 1978 in response to growing concerns about the possible harmful effects on the environment of long range transport of air pollutants, particularly acid rain. It is one of five calibrated watershed studies in Canada that represent a range of climatic conditions, terrain sensitivities, and rates of atmospheric acidic deposition. This report presents the proceedings of a workshop on the study, covering programs and concepts in integrated monitoring and research; monitoring global change; research and monitoring in and around Kejimkujik National Park; monitoring and research of surface waters, lakes and streams, and forests and watersheds; and the organization and interpretation of Kejimkujik research station establishment. Summary reports are given on watershed studies in the Experimental Ponds Area of Newfoundland, the Integrated Forest Studies Cooperative in Vermont, and the Humic Lake acidification experiment in Norway. Highlights of an open discussion on future activities are also included.

Book Ecological Monitoring and Research in the Coastal Environment of the Atlantic Maritime Ecozone

Download or read book Ecological Monitoring and Research in the Coastal Environment of the Atlantic Maritime Ecozone written by Canada. Environment Canada. Atlantic Region and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A workshop was held to explore the need for an ecological research and monitoring site in the Atlantic Maritime Ecozone, with particular reference to the land/sea/atmospheric interface (coastal zone), and to explore the suitability of the Huntsman Marine Science Centre, in conjunction with the Fisheries and Oceans Canada Biological Station, as the administrative center of such a site. This publication presents summaries of the working group discussions on estuarine and marine ecosystems, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and ecosystems data management, and includes papers presented at the workshop. The topics of the papers include ecosystem and wildlife monitoring, atmospheric variables and trees, research and monitoring programs, sulfur dioxide deposition, lakewater chemistry, benthic monitoring, and nutrient cycling patterns.

Book Forest Biodiversity in North Central and South America and the Caribbean Research and Monitoring

Download or read book Forest Biodiversity in North Central and South America and the Caribbean Research and Monitoring written by J.A. Comiskey and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-11-15 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of two high-level, data-rich volumes from the massive Smithsonian/MAB Biological Diversity Program documenting the latest findings on forest biodiversity. In original contributions, some three hundred scientists from over forty countries discuss socioeconomic aspects, ecological monitoring and assessment, forest dynamics, growth trends, dry forests, species richness of woody regeneration and of vascular plants, hurricane impact, tropical cloud forests, Landsat-TM satellite mapping, and quantitative ethnobotany. The book covers first the research and monitoring methodologies for the New World and then the results of individual research and integrated studies on all aspects of forest biodiversity in North and South America and the Caribbean.

Book Using Environmental Prediction in Ecosystem Science in Atlantic Canada

Download or read book Using Environmental Prediction in Ecosystem Science in Atlantic Canada written by Roderick W. Shaw and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summarizes proceedings of a workshop that brought together ecosystem scientists and specialists in environmental prediction to discuss how to make better use of environmental prediction techniques in ecosystem science. Presentations were made on the following topics: ecosystems and assessments; data, models, and methods; real-time predictions; coastal zone modelling; and adaptive environmental management. Panel and workshop discussions covered: which characteristics of Atlantic region ecosystems to predict, and why; proposals for ecosystem projects in the Atlantic region that would make use of environmental prediction techniques; and recommendations on the next steps for better integration of environmental prediction techniques into ecosystem science. Abstracts of presentations are included in the appendix.

Book Lead Fishing Sinkers and Jigs in Canada

Download or read book Lead Fishing Sinkers and Jigs in Canada written by Anton Michael Scheuhammer and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "More than 5 million Canadians take part in recreational angling each year, spending over 50 million days fishing on open water. Recreational anglers contribute to environmental lead deposition through the loss of lead fishing sinkers and jigs. Each year, lost or discarded fishing sinkers and jigs amounting to an estimated 500 tonnes of lead, and representing up to 14% of all nonrecoverable lead releases in Canada, are deposited in the Canadian environment. Wildlife, primarily piscivorous birds and other waterbirds, ingest fishing sinkers and jigs during feeding, when they either mistake the sinkers and jigs for food items or grit or consume lost bait fish with the line and weight still attached."--from Abstract.
