Book Ecological Pioneers

Download or read book Ecological Pioneers written by Martin Mulligan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-10-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whenever the history of ecological thought has been written the contributions of Australian thinkers have been omitted. Yet Australia as a continent of extreme, rare and complex environments has produced a startling group of ecological pioneers. Across a wide range of human endeavour, Australian thinkers and innovators - whether they have thought of themselves as environmentalists or not - have made some truly original contributions to ecological thought. Ecological Pioneers traces the emergence of ecological understandings in Australia. By constructing a social history with chapters focusing on different fields in the arts, sciences, politics and public life, the authors bring to life the work of significant individuals. Some of the ecological pioneers featured include Joseph Banks, Russell Drysdale, Judith Wright, Myles Dunphy, Philip Crosbie Morrison, Vincent Serventy, Francis Ratcliffe, the Gurindji and Yolngu peoples, Bill Mollison, Jack Mundey, Val Plumwood, Michael Leunig, and many more.

Book excerpt: Of skulls, an astonishing hoax, the beginnings of the study of humankind, scientistic racism - and the Australian scientists in the thick of it... The 20th-century anatomists Grafton Elliot Smith, Frederic Wood Jones and Arthur Keith travelled the globe collecting and constructing morphologies of the biological world with the aim of linking humans to their deep past as well as their evolutionary niche. They dissected human bodies and scrutinised the living, explaining for the first time the intricacies of human biology. They placed the body in its environment and gave it a history, thus creating an ecological synthesis in striking contrast to the model of humanity that they inherited as students. Their version of human development and history profoundly influenced public opinion as they wrote prolifically for the press, published bestsellers on human origins and evolution, and spoke eloquently at public meetings and on the radio. By changing popular views of race and environment they moulded attitudes as to what it meant to be human in a post-Darwinian world - thus providing a potent critique of racism.

Book Timothy Flint

Download or read book Timothy Flint written by John Ervin Kirkpatrick and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Timothy Flint: Pioneer, Missionary, Author, Editor, 1780-1840, the Story of His Life Among the Pioneers and Frontiersmen in the Ohio and Mississippi Valley and in New England and the South A large amount of material and that for a period for this study, where I had almost nothing else, came from Mr. Flint's grandchildren, Mrs. Emeline Flint Seip of Alexandria, Louisiana, and James Timothy Flint of Nashville, Tennessee. Family letters, photographs, newspapers and traditions - everything which could in any way aid me - have been freely and gladly put at my disposal. With them I have shared the pain in thinking of the treasures that were destroyed by the Union army in Alexandria, which burned the library of James Timothy Flint Sr. This was a very large and rare collection of books that was hardly equaled by any private collection in the south. It contained also most of Timothy Flint's collection of books and some of the manuscripts which he left at the time of his death. A more recent and unavoidable accident, the Galveston flood of 1900, destroyed a number of the books and papers of Timothy Flint which were in the possession of his grandchildren. The only portrait of Mr. Flint, which is known to have been in existence, was destroyed at that time. I am under special obligations to the librarians of Hartford Theological Seminary, Yale University, and Harvard University for their aid in procuring books and manuscripts which could not have been obtained otherwise.
