Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ---Technical Skills for dealing with the cold. This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn how to get along in the out of doors. It is principle based, meaning it helps you relate to this skills as a master would. Many times people are taught the technique only, and that is simple and providing everything stays the same it will work. Here's a technique for building a fire. A can of gas, and a match... what if you don't have a gasoline, or any other kindling or fuel? Well that happened to us. I was hunting with an Uncle who had put on several extra pair of socks because it was colllld. Pretty soon his feet got cold, but he didn't complain. Well, during a rest stop I noticed he was doing something off to the side. He had taken paper from his pockets and pushed in under some branches and lit it. Well, it started to going and he was warming his boots, but it started to die down, so he quickly looked for more wood, but was not able to keep it going. Again he did not complain, but a short time later he told me his feet were really really cold, and we needed to do something. Well, we pulled his boots off and put them on my stomach, and that helped some, but he was cold , we needed a fire. Only problem was we had no kindling. He had used what paper, and TP he had, I did not have any but we needed to start a fire? We put our heads together and this is what we figured out. We put the bullet of a cartridge in the end of the barrel and levered it back and forth to remove the bullet then we poured it on top of flat rock. We figured if we used several cartridges, or more, we would have a pretty good pile of rifle powder (rifle powder burn much slower than black powder, which would be tooo fast!) so we gathered branches and small limbs and piled them over the pile of powder. Then we made sure we had plenty of extra wood to add to it, once it started. Then we lit the powder. Sure enough it started the branches, and bigger stuff, and we had a good fire. Once he was good and warm we put one pair of socks on his feet and then his boots. The extra socks were too many, they squished the veins and prevented the blood from his warm torso, from going down to his feet. With one pair of thick socks he did much better than the three pair. There's lots to keeping warm... here's some other thoughts. Important skills that are "not" common knowledge. Coats do not warm us up, they prevent heat loss. If your feet are cold put on a scarf and a hat.... The head and neck are responsible for 50% to 75% of the body's heat loss; also they are most important if the body does not have heat to protect the brain, heart, lungs, etc., it surely won't send it down to your feet. Feet can drop to temperatures below 50° F. If the heart temperature drops to even 70° F chances are you have died. I mention many "principles" associated with cold conditions. Principles are the key to building predictable outcomes or results. Techniques change. For example: Transporting heat to your toes requires warm blood pumping through your arteries and veins. If you put on three pair of wool socks, on a cold day to keep your feet warm, but you use your everyday shoes, you will likely squeeze your feet so tight that blood will have a hard time keeping them warm. Book excerpt: Here is E. L. Doctorow’s debut novel, a searing allegory of frontier life that sets the stage for his subsequent classics. Hard Times is the name of a town in the barren hills of the Dakota Territory. To this town there comes one day one of the reckless sociopaths who wander the West to kill and rape and pillage. By the time he is through and has ridden off, Hard Times is a smoking ruin. The de facto mayor, Blue, takes in two survivors of the carnage–a boy, Jimmy, and a prostitute, Molly, who has suffered unspeakably–and makes them his provisional family. Blue begins to rebuild Hard Times, welcoming new settlers, while Molly waits with vengeance in her heart for the return of the outlaw. Praise for Welcome to Hard Times “A forceful, credible story of cowardice and evil.”—The Washington Post “We are caught up with these people as real human beings.”—Chicago Sun-Times “Dramatic and exciting.”—The New York Times “Terse and powerful.”—Newsweek “A taut, bloodthirsty read.”—The Times Literary Supplement “A superb piece of fiction.”—The New Republic

Book Keeping Warm with Fur and Fat

Download or read book Keeping Warm with Fur and Fat written by Hannah Fields and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keeping warm in subzero temperatures can be difficult. Some animals can't manage to retain their body heat in cold weather. However, some animals such as the muskox have adapted to survive in cold climates. They have long, shaggy fur that keeps them warm in the colder months, which they shed in the summer months to stay cool. Other animals such as bears and seals have a layer of fat to keep them warm. The information in this book highlights how these adaptations have developed over many thousands of years. The information in this book supports essential elementary life science concepts.

Book Rocky Ground An Ozark Family Holds On Through Hard Times

Download or read book Rocky Ground An Ozark Family Holds On Through Hard Times written by Margaret DuBois and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-01-20 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economy didn't go through the Great Depression - people did. Margaret DuBois grew up in a period of historic deprivation. Her family had to retreat to her grandparents' Ozark farm to survive. The farm patriarch, her grandfather, was an orator - a minister who had once served as a State Legislator. Their home-life differed from most similarly-situated Ozark families in its focus on spiritual duties and the love of learning. Books lined their shelves. Political bombast and pious sermon occupied their dinners. They didn't get up pre-dawn as most farm families did. Hard times drew out the best and worst of human character. As she watched her family cope with all manner of human failing, and unremitting rotten luck, Margaret saw that people are complex and rife with contradictions. In her family's composure through bitter disappointments she saw a strength of character worthy of remembrance. And on that rocky ground where the DuBois family held fast, she hatched her dreams.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Merve Wilkinson and Wildwood, his small patch of forest, provide powerful evidence that a forest can be logged while its integrity is maintained in perpetuity. In speaking out against current industrial clear-cut logging practices, Merve has become a genuine Canadian hero. Uncompromising, tough, fearless and with a wonderful sense of humour, he is now an elder who inspires young people, who refer to his home as "Mervana." This is a story that should be read by all who care about the future and seek alternatives to our destructive ways." —David Suzuki Over the past decade, thousands of visitors to Wildwood have been profoundly encouraged by what they've witnessed. This has led to a considerable level of national and international acclaim for Merve Wilkinson's silvicultural philosophy and practices. Now the personal story behind these achievements has been told. This excellent book by Goody Niosi provides a compelling portrait of a truly remarkable man." —Duncan M. Taylor
