This book was released on 2008 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In late 2005 Turkey began accession talks with the European Union. It now seems that some EU member states consider Turkish accession inherently undesirable. The Committee strongly supports the United Kingdom Government's position that Turkey's accession to the EU offers potential benefits for both sides. This not to underplay the difficulties and obstacles. The Irish "No" vote in the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty has led some European leaders to say there can be no enlargement without institutional reform. Turkey itself has faced severe political and constitutional difficulties this year. The country has a relatively large economy, but GDP per capita still remains low and inflation high by developed country standards. Political and social reforms will be necessary. Migration from Turkey will need to be carefully managed. The conflict over Cyprus also has to be resolved. The Committee's fear is that the negative signals recently sent out by some EU member states will reduce the political will to negotiate. Suspending or frustrating the accession negotiations will signal to a moderate, democratic, secular state that it can never be part of Europe. Whatever the reasons given for any suspension, the belief in Turkey would be likely to be that the country could not join purely because the majority of its population is Muslim. That is not a signal the Committee believes should be given. Turkey is a large economy, in a key strategic position, with high growth rates, a young population (compared with current EU member states) and sizeable investment flows. Turkey needs to be reassured that, if it demonstrates its commitment to negotiation and reform, that commitment will be fully matched by the EU and that the door to membership remains wide open.

As a teenager, Kristin Berry had heard all the horror stories surrounding foster care and adoption—abuse, neglect, rejection, anger, and misunderstandings. But instead of closing her heart, God opened it wide. This is Kristin’s honest, unvarnished story of some of her experiences as a foster parent of twenty-three children over the course of nine years. What she learned is that living in a foster home is like living with a revolving door. You never know who will arrive or who you will have to say goodbye to. Leaving the door open means there will be heartache and pain, but also adventure and unexpected joy. Kristin and her husband, Mike, have been through it all in their unique parenting journey. If you have ever wondered what it’s really like to be a foster parent, this book will help you gain a true understanding of the everyday trials and triumphs these moms and dads face. It will also inspire you to consider opening your door…and to leave it wide open.

Book Door Wide Open

Download or read book Door Wide Open written by Jack Kerouac and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2001-06-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a blind date in Greenwich Village set up by Allen Ginsberg, Joyce Johnson (then Joyce Glassman) met Jack Kerouac in January 1957, nine months before he became famous overnight with the publication of On the Road. She was an adventurous, independent-minded twenty-one-year-old; Kerouac was already running on empty at thirty-five. This unique book, containing the many letters the two of them wrote to each other, reveals a surprisingly tender side of Kerouac. It also shares the vivid and unusual perspective of what it meant to be young, Beat, and a woman in the Cold War fifties. Reflecting on those tumultuous years, Johnson seamlessly interweaves letters and commentary, bringing to life her love affair with one of American letters' most fascinating and enigmatic figures.

Hopalong Cassidy is a cowboy hero created by the author Clarence Mulford, who wrote a series of popular short stories and many novels based on the character. In his early writings, Mulford portrayed the character as rude, dangerous, and rough-talking. He had a wooden leg which caused him to walk with a little "hop", hence the nickname. The character—as played by movie actor William Boyd in films adapted from Mulford's books—was transformed into a clean-cut, sarsaparilla-drinking hero. Sixty-six popular films appeared. The Coming of Cassidy and Others Hopalong Cassidy Bar-20 Days Buck Peters, Ranchman The Bar-20 Three Tex Clarence E. Mulford (1883–1956) created Hopalong Cassidy in 1904 while living in Fryeburg, Maine, and the many short stories and 28 novels were adapted to radio, feature film, television, and comic books, often deviating significantly from the original stories, especially in the character's traits. But more than just writing a very popular series of Westerns, Mulford recreated an entire detailed and authentic world filled with characters drawn from his extensive library research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Coming of Cassidy by Clarence E. Mulford Buck Peters put everything he owned into the Bar-20 and thought he could make a go of it. It looked pretty good too, until he fell in with that gang of renegade buffalo hunters. There were after his spread, his cattle, his life. And they swore to let nothing stand in their way. And then they met a cowhand named Cassidy... Bar-20 by Clarence E. Mulford Cassidy could fan a gun like a Billy the Kid. Six rounds in three seconds was his slowest time. No one in the state of Texas could beat him. That was, until he met Slim Travennes, head of the Sandy Creek Vigilante Committee. Slim was snake-fast. "Death with a little skin wrapped around it," was the way the tinhorn in Waco described him. No man could go up against him and live. Hoppy could stand or die. He had no other choice. Book excerpt: In INERTIA: Seven Principles of Leadership in Motion, professional speaker and trainer Brandon Walker explains how the ideas that define the physical laws of inertia may be applied to dynamic, effective leadership. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion, while objects at rest tend to stay at rest. The heart of leadership lies in the leader's ability to generate positive, forward motion in people's lives and to continue to influence those people throughout their journey. Using a combination of pop-culture illustrations (everything from Battlestar Galactica to Frank Sinatra) and personal anecdotes, Brandon defines each of the seven leadership principles (Intent, Necessity, Energy, Resilience, Trust, Imagination, and Authenticity) and explains how to apply them to one's own leadership experience.

Book I Am Jewish

Download or read book I Am Jewish written by Ruth Pearl and published by Jewish Lights Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being Jewish. What does it mean--today--and for the future? Listen in as Jews of all backgrounds reflect, argue, and imagine. When Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was brutally murdered in Pakistan, many Jews were particularly touched by his last words affirming his Jewish identity. Many were moved to reflect on or analyze their feelings toward their lives as Jews. The saying "two Jews, three opinions" well reflects the Jewish community's broad range of views on any topic. I Am Jewish captures this richness of interpretation and inspires Jewish people of all backgrounds to reflect upon and take pride in their identity. Contributions, ranging from major essays to a paragraph or a sentence, come from adults as well as young people in the form of personal feelings, statements of theology, life stories and historical reflections.
