Book Modern Scottish Diaspora

Download or read book Modern Scottish Diaspora written by Murray Stewart Leith and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores the connectedness of the diaspora to the homeland from a variety of different perspectivesThis book explores a range of different perspectives on the Scottish diaspora, reflecting a growing interest in the subject from academics, politicians and policy makers and coinciding with Scotland's second year of homecoming in 2014. The Scottish Government has actively developed a diaspora strategy, not least in order to encourage 'roots tourism', as those individuals of Scots descent come back to visit their 'homeland' diaspora. Key FeaturesExamines the importance of links within the Scottish diaspora for Scots both at home and abroad.Multi-disciplinary perspectives from literature to sportOf interest to policy makers, genealogists, tourism bodies, politicians and general publicThe Scots form one of the world's largest diasporas, with around 30 million people worldwide claiming a Scottish ancestry. There are few countries around the globe without a Caledonian Society, a Burns Club, a Scottish country dance society, or similar organisation. Book Foreign policy considerations for the UK and Scotland in the event of Scotland becoming an independent country

Download or read book Foreign policy considerations for the UK and Scotland in the event of Scotland becoming an independent country written by Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Foreign Affairs Committee and published by Stationery Office. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With just over sixteen months to go before the Scottish referendum there are still significant gaps in the Scottish Government's proposed foreign policy, according to a report published today by the Foreign Affairs Committee. There has not been enough analysis on what sort of overseas diplomatic network and external security and intelligence provision Scotland would have to set up. There needs to be a more realistic assessment of the extent to which Scotland could expect the rest of the UK (RUK) to co-operate with, and support it, on security and intelligence. There is a pressing need for official legal advice on a wide range of international legal issues including EU accession, EU opt-outs and membership of international organisations. The Report says that the overwhelming body of law, evidence, practice and precedent supports the view that the RUK would inherit the vast majority of the UK's international rights and obligations whereas Scotland would start anew internationally if it became independent. Having two co-equal states could lead to a level of legal and political insecurity that would not be tolerated by other states. The report disputes the view that Scotland's journey towards membership of the EU and NATO would be straightforward. It is for the EU itself to determine in accordance with its regulations whether and how Scotland would become a member. Scotland may have to make trade-offs to secure the unanimous support it would need from within the EU.

Book Scotland and Europe Scotland in Europe

Download or read book Scotland and Europe Scotland in Europe written by Gilles Leydier and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the book is to explore the long-standing and multi-faceted relationship between Scotland and the societies and cultures of the European continent, in various epochs and from a large diversity of view points and problematics. The book collects most of the contributions from the IVth annual conference of the Société Française d’Etudes Ecossaises, held in Toulon in October 2005. This international conference gathered fifty European academics, working in a wide range of research fields, from social history to art history, from language to literature, from politics to civilisation and cultural studies. The interdisciplinary ambition and cross-cultural perspective of the conference are reflected in the volume. The book is divided into four main sections: links with Europe, visions of Europe, voices in Europe, and current political issues within the European Union. It illustrates the richness and complexity of the dialogue between Scotland and the continent over the centuries, and underlines the open, fluid and dynamic character of the Scottish identity.

Book Dead Drunk

Download or read book Dead Drunk written by Paul Garrigan and published by Maverick House . This book was released on 2010 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dead Drunk is the moving and powerful story of a teenager who lost himself to alcohol addiction after the breakdown of his parents' marriage. Paul Garrigan has written an honest (and often darkly humorous) account of his alcoholism. His adventures took him from the quiet suburbs of Dublin to begging on the streets of London, getting paid to drink in Oxford, and swigging illegal booze in Saudi Arabia, before finally ending up in a remote Thai village where he fully succumbed to his addiction, and was determined to drink himself to death. While surfing the Internet one night he came across a highly unorthodox detox programme being offered by Buddhist monks, and in a last-ditch attempt at sobriety, he set out on what he was sure would be his strangest and most difficult journey yet. Dead Drunk is a story of redemption and of how one man found sobriety. It is a story of hope.

Book The National Question and Electoral Politics in Quebec and Scotland

Download or read book The National Question and Electoral Politics in Quebec and Scotland written by Éric Bélanger and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Quebec and Scotland, questions of constitutional change, national identity, and national grievance play an important role in the electoral calculations of political parties and voters. Taking a strong stance on the national question can have strategic benefits both for parties pushing for greater autonomy and for those endorsing the status quo. In this in-depth look at issue voting, authors Éric Bélanger, Richard Nadeau, Ailsa Henderson, and Eve Hepburn examine how the national question affects political parties and voter behaviour in both substate nations. Through party manifestos, interviews with legislators, and opinion survey data, this book demonstrates that calls for constitutional change influence political debate, competition, voter choice, and the outcome of elections not only within Quebec and Scotland but also across Canada and the United Kingdom. Minority nationalist parties, the authors show, can gain support by claiming ownership of issues with widespread public agreement, such as self-determination and protecting the identity and interests of the nation. A comprehensive analysis of recent electoral politics, The National Question and Electoral Politics in Quebec and Scotland greatly enhances our understanding of the electoral impact of substate nationalism.
