Download or read book Keeping My Head written by Charlotte Chapman and published by Booktango. This book was released on 2012-07-05 with total page 1112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This autobiographical account speaks out about domestic violence, parental alienation and mental illness. In particular it expresses the damage done when family members refuse to admit there is a problem, and instead turn on the person who raises the alarm. This is the true story of a disappearance triggered by bullying – and a Facebook campaign that helped bring a missing man home. It documents five years of harassment of a family – harassment that caused behavioural problems, physical illness and ultimately, mental breakdown. Sections written by the author's daughter (now 17) give a child's eye view of living with abuse. Comments by readers include: “Utterly amazed by this objective record of an horrendous experience... the writing drew me in, in an intimate and personal way, producing all sorts of raw emotions. Moved to tears by the chapter on abused wives.” “Could not stop reading. I am simply stunned. Speechless.” “... an inspiration. I've no doubt this book will be invaluable to many women out there who have suffered/are suffering in similar circumstances.” “I could see a movie being made out of this book... there is a great storyline: lovely English woman with two wonderful daughters marries into the Great American Dream, which slowly turns into a nightmare.”

Book Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head

Download or read book Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head written by Ian Redford and published by Black & White Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era before big money arrived, Ian Redford, the son of a Perthshire farmer, was stigmatised as football's rich kid. But, in reality, there was no silver spoon. And at an early age, when it was discovered that Redford was completely deaf in one ear, he was advised not to play contact sport of any kind. But this did not deter him from pursuing his dream of being a professional footballer. At the age of 16, Ian Redford's career took off when he made his debut for Dundee FC and at the age of 19 he broke the Scottish transfer record when he signed for Glasgow Rangers for GBP 210,000. After nearly six years in Glasgow, Redford returned east to play for Dundee United under the notorious Jim McLean, and his career reached new and unexpected heights. Football has been a key part of Ian Redford's life but behind the success and the goals, his family has been touched by tragedy. When Ian was seven years old, his baby brother contracted leukemia and his death five years later devastated Ian's family. It was an event the family would never recover from but it also gave the young Ian Redford the motivation to succeed which he channelled into his football. It was the start of his own journey which gave him challenges and opportunities he could never have dreamt of. Insightful, moving and entertaining, Ian Redford's autobiography is a fascinating read throughout as his journey takes him from rural Perthshire to the biggest football stages and on to, amongst other things, a spell as a FIFA registered players' agent and brief career as a businessman in Eastern Europe with Sergei Baltacha as they discovered how not to deal with the local Russian mafia.

Book Keeping Your Head in the Game

Download or read book Keeping Your Head in the Game written by Gary Bloom and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on his work with elite athletes, the world's first sports psychotherapist on what to do when life throws you a curveball 'Cracking tales, a great read' Nigel Owens MBE, rugby union referee 'Absolutely fascinating . . . a genuine must-read for anyone interested in the human side of sport' Peter Drury, football commentator Elite athletes play out their lives in the most public of arenas. Everything they do is analysed in real time and then picked apart in the pub and in the press afterwards. 'Why did they miss that penalty?', 'What made them fall at the first jump?', 'That press conference was a bit weird.' We can all speculate, but what's really going on? In Keeping Your Head in the Game we peer into this highly confidential world. We follow the journeys of ten athletes in their therapy sessions with sports psychotherapist Gary Bloom, from a rugby player arrested for a drunken brawl, through a homesick cricketer on tour, to a snooker player struggling with his feelings of inadequacy and low self-esteem. Structured around the emotions we all experience on a daily basis - shame, anger, fear, jealousy and envy, love - chapter by chapter, the book reveals, explains and attempts to resolve the inner traumas that have an impact on the performance of these sports personalities. Seeing how they overcome their demons is a powerful way of tackling our own and, as Gary says, happier players play better - in sport and in life. 'For anyone interested in competitive sport, what people have to do to get to the top and what that can do to the human psyche' Catherine Jackson, journalist and former editor of Therapy Today 'It's amazing how clubs invest in repairing the bodies of their players whilst largely ignoring their minds. Elite athletes are just as fragile as the rest of us. Happily change is on the way and this must-read book will only accelerate that' Jon Champion, football commentator

This book was released on 2009-07-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An award-winning poet highlights the vibrant history of his generation in a farewell to Vietnam, the chaotic sixties, and their long aftermath. “We tend to write about what will not go away,” Doug Anderson says in this candid, darkly humorous journey of self-discovery. Beginning in 1943, in the pre–civil rights South filled with tobacco and war stories, he recalls the difficult childhood that propels him into service in Vietnam. In 1967, having returned home deeply shaken by his experience as a combat medical corpsman, Anderson plunges into the heady freedoms and excesses of the sixties. His downward spiral—through booze, substance abuse, and sex—brings him dangerously close to a total breakdown. Finally, in a return group visit to Vietnam in 2000, he meets with former enemies now become writers and poets. Moved by the realization that “the last time I saw these people they were trying to kill me,” Anderson confronts the past and calls upon a story—this powerful story—to rebuild a life.
