Book Keeping Hope Alive

Download or read book Keeping Hope Alive written by Dr. Hawa Abdi and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-02 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The moving memoir of one brave woman who, along with her daughters, has kept 90,000 of her fellow citizens safe, healthy, and educated for over 20 years in Somalia. Dr. Hawa Abdi, "the Mother Teresa of Somalia" and Nobel Peace Prize nominee, is the founder of a massive camp for internally displaced people located a few miles from war-torn Mogadishu, Somalia. Since 1991, when the Somali government collapsed, famine struck, and aid groups fled, she has dedicated herself to providing help for people whose lives have been shattered by violence and poverty. She turned her 1300 acres of farmland into a camp that has numbered up to 90,000 displaced people, ignoring the clan lines that have often served to divide the country. She inspired her daughters, Deqo and Amina, to become doctors. Together, they have saved tens of thousands of lives in her hospital, while providing an education to hundreds of displaced children. In 2010, Dr. Abdi was kidnapped by radical insurgents, who also destroyed much of her hospital, simply because she was a woman. She, along with media pressure, convinced the rebels to let her go, and she demanded and received a written apology. Dr. Abdi's story of incomprehensible bravery and perseverance will inspire readers everywhere.

Download or read book Keeping Hope Alive written by Dermot A. Lane and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-26 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today more and more people are asking questions about human, social, and cosmic destiny. Does the universe have a purpose? What is the point of historical existence? What happens at death? What can we hope for? Is it possible to talk meaningfully about another world? In 'Keeping Hope Alive', Dermot A. Lane addresses these and other questions. The author sets out to develop a theology of hope rooted in both human experience and the Christian tradition. In discussing Christian belief, Lane pays particular attention to the death and resurrection of Christ as both the pivotal eschatological event and the fundamental ground of Christian hope. At the same time he deals with contemporary human experience, addressing questions arising from the Marxist critique of Christianity, the nuclear threat, the ecological crisis, and the apparent emptiness of much post-modern thinking. Dermot Lane confronts difficult issues, such as death, heaven, hell, purgatory, resurrection, reincarnation, and the possibility of universal salvation, with realism and honesty. The end result is a new theological synthesis that takes account of recent developments in anthropology, feminism, and cosmology. This carefully-crafted book will be of value to all who are asking searching questions about the meaning of living and dying.

  • Pages : 267 pages

Download or read book All Societies Die written by Samuel Cohn and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-15 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In All Societies Die, Samuel Cohn asks us to prepare for the inevitable. Our society is going to die. What are you going to do about it? But he also wants us to know that there's still reason for hope. In an immersive and mesmerizing discussion Cohn considers what makes societies (throughout history) collapse. All Societies Die points us to the historical examples of the Byzantine empire, the collapse of Somalia, the rise of Middle Eastern terrorism, the rise of drug cartels in Latin America and the French Revolution to explain how societal decline has common features and themes. Cohn takes us on an easily digestible journey through history. While he unveils the past, his message to us about the present is searing. Through his assessment of past—and current—societies, Cohn offers us a new way of looking at societal growth and decline. With a broad panorama of bloody stories, unexpected historical riches, crime waves, corruption, and disasters, he shows us that although our society will, inevitably, die at some point, there's still a lot we can do to make it better and live a little longer. His quirky and inventive approach to an "end-of-the-world" scenario should be a warning. We're not there yet. Cohn concludes with a strategy of preserving and rebuilding so that we don't have to give a eulogy anytime soon.

In Beyond the Storm, Debra Morton reveals why, providing the techniques and strategies that helped her and many others not only survive but also thrive, even in the most painful of circumstances. That playbook is here for you to use immediately, along with interactive tools, journaling questions, and scripture studies that will guide you through pain and struggle and into strength and victory once again. Download or read book Keeping Hope Alive written by Freddie Power and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-08-25 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keeping Hope Alive is about the incredibly supernatural things that God comes and does in the lives of everyday people. He comes meeting the needs of the individuals on the streets, in kids Bible Clubs, for the homeless, and on mission trips. The scripture says that if you give a cup of cold water in His name, we have done everything. When the Keeping Hope Alive teams go out, rather than a cup of cold water, we give out bottled water in hospitals, roses at the bus station on Mothers Day, candy to little children in apartment communities, and bread to poor on mission outreaches. We hear story after story from those we encounter of how blessed they are by the simple act of love that we extend to them in Jesus name. This book shares the details of many of these encounters where God showed up blessing individuals through these simple acts of obedience. As we put our arms around them; He places His arm around them, too. When we give to them; He gives to them, too. These pages are filled with stories of Hope. Hope that has been revitalized, instilled, and even seen become reality, as we minister through the non-profit Christian organization of Keeping Hope Alive.

Book The Shawshank Redemption Revealed

Download or read book The Shawshank Redemption Revealed written by Mark Dawidziak and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 25th anniversary history and celebration of The Shawshank Redemption, one of the most cherished American films of the late twentieth century and one of the finest movies made from a Stephen King story. The movie not only boasts a great story, it has a great backstory, starting with the dollar deal that eventually led King and co-stars Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman to put their trust in a largely untested director making his first feature film. Although the film received mostly positive reviews on its release in September 1994, the box office was disappointing and it failed to win many awards. But as Andy tells Red in the film, “no good thing ever dies.” The movie found new life, reaching an ever-growing audience on cable and home video (through word of mouth, it became one of the top-rented movies of 1995). Each year, The Shawshank Redemption rises in polls asking film fans to name their favorite movies. It has become nothing less than this generation’s The Grapes of Wrath, an inspiring story about keeping hope alive in bleak times and under the most horrendous conditions.

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY VULTURE AND SHE READS • “The female astronaut novel we never knew we needed.”—Entertainment Weekly June is a brilliant but difficult girl with a gift for mechanical invention who leaves home to begin grueling astronaut training at the National Space Program. Younger by two years than her classmates at Peter Reed, the school on campus named for her uncle, she flourishes in her classes but struggles to make friends and find true intellectual peers. Six years later, she has gained a coveted post as an engineer on a space station—and a hard-won sense of belonging—but is haunted by the mystery of Inquiry, a revolutionary spacecraft powered by her beloved late uncle’s fuel cells. The spacecraft went missing when June was twelve years old, and while the rest of the world seems to have forgotten the crew, June alone has evidence that makes her believe they are still alive. She seeks out James, her uncle’s former protégé, also brilliant, also difficult, who has been trying to discover why Inquiry’s fuel cells failed. James and June forge an intense intellectual bond that becomes an electric attraction. But the relationship that develops between them as they work to solve the fuel cell’s fatal flaw threatens to destroy everything they’ve worked so hard to create—and any chance of bringing the Inquiry crew home alive. A propulsive narrative of one woman’s persistence and journey to self-discovery, In the Quick is an exploration of the strengths and limits of human ability in the face of hardship, and the costs of human ingenuity. This edition includes a bonus chapter.

Book excerpt: Life changes in a nanosecond when storms sweep in, often without warning. They leave our knuckles white and our hearts broken. With minds barely able to think clearly, we often set our Bible aside. In reality, that’s when we need its comfort and strength most. This devotional is written for those in crisis, for those longing for hope but lacking the ability to focus on a lengthy Scripture passage. These minute-sized devotions offer respite to readers caught in the storms of life. Each of the 90 devotions follows a pattern: Key Verse Pause (devotion) Ponder (application question or action step) Pray (short prayer) Relevant quote Readers of these devotions are facing difficult circumstances and need spiritual encouragement in bite-sized pieces. Their greatest need is hope. They need reassurance that God’s love will never let them go. His presence will never leave them, and His strength will carry them through. Keeping Hope Alive addresses these needs as follows: Its overall message directs their minds to God’s character and promises. These bite-size bits of truth will feed their soul and give them the strength and encouragement needed for that day. Devotions are short enough to read and keep their focus even when their minds are on overload. All segments work together to make it easy for readers to recall truth. Relevant quotes reinforce the day’s teaching.
