Book BJJ Notebook

Download or read book BJJ Notebook written by Thadeu Vieira and published by BJJ Notebook. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you don't know the answers to these questions... You need the BJJ Notebook!- What did you learn last week?- Can you remember that awesome class from last month?- How many times did you win or lose during the past 12 months?- What submissions caused you to lose more often than others? - Can you list all techniques that you learned in the last seminar?- How many points did you score in your last tournament?- What does your instructor recommend that you focus on?- What do you need to improve TODAY?"This is the first non-instructional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu book ever published and it is the most important to have because it's the only one about YOU".Helio Gracie, one of the founding fathers of Jiu-Jitsu, said that "BJJ is for everyone." People will try and quit BJJ for a variety of reasons beyond a BJJ school's control. However, no one should quit BJJ because they didn't have every opportunity to succeed. There is no "one-size-fits-all" BJJ. Every student will receive and internalize the lessons of BJJ in a unique way and create their own personalized version of BJJ. This is one of the beautiful aspects of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Each student has the opportunity to access the infinite variety and richness of BJJ and create their own work of art that becomes part of their person. There are precious few things in life that can claim to provide such a wholesome and rewarding benefit.A BJJ notebook serves the practical purpose of a training log helping to remember all of the different moves that were taught over previous weeks, months and years. In BJJ, one can go years without seeing the same move taught twice. If a move is taught by an instructor and then quickly forgotten, how is that different from never having learned it in the first place? This BJJ notebook is the first BJJ JOURNAL, which was designed to make the most out of the beginning steps in what is hopefully a long and fruitful BJJ journey. Encouraging the use of the BJJ notebook is one of the ways a BJJ school can make the BJJ journey more accessible to those willing to put in the effort. It can serve as a basis to promote discussion and interaction among students about issues they are facing and allow students to learn from each other. The martial arts journey will still take enormous work and dedication. However, the BJJ notebook should at least provide a mechanism to help focus the student's effort to get the most of the BJJ experience.

Book Psychology of Brazilian jiu jitsu

Download or read book Psychology of Brazilian jiu jitsu written by Bakari Akil II, Ph.D. and published by Academic Group Publishing (BRAII-owner). This book was released on 2017-08-03 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grappling is a smash-mouth activity. It is a put your beer down and let’s settle this type of martial art. Man vs. man, woman vs. man, child vs. man, it is one of the ultimate ‘prove it’ combat sports. Yet, once you get past the rough and challenging aspect of submission wrestling it’s easy to see that grappling is much more than that. It is also a very cerebral activity. Psychology is the study of mental processes and behaviors. By studying our psyches we hope to learn how to successfully navigate our world and become more capable in our endeavors. As the goal of theory is explanatory and predictive power, using psychology theories can help us to understand some of the existential questions behind our art and can help us to create better models for training and success. In other instances, it is just plain fun to think about. The application of psychology to submission wrestling is relatively new and in many cases non-existent, so this book is more of an exploration of what is possible. It covers a broad range of topics and doesn’t hesitate to introduce counterintuitive thought for the reader to ponder and digest. "Psychology of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" will whet your appetite to see how psychology can be applied to grappling and not just in a generic sports psychology sense. Through the use of essay, "Psychology of BJJ" talks about what it’s like to be the new guy, problems with warm-ups, success by default, immersive environments, why you can’t always be nice in practice and even asks outright, “Are you happy?” If that is not enough, it also discusses why you absolutely must not avoid better grapplers, tells you what type of grappler you are and why your team is just as important as your coach. Additionally, "Psychology of BJJ" delves into the unconscious mind and talks about easy ways to improve by taking simple steps you probably never thought about before. It also discusses quirky, but valid, psychological theory, based on new research that can make a difference in your grappling game.

Book Martial Arts Studies

Download or read book Martial Arts Studies written by Paul Bowman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-04-09 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phrase “martial arts studies” is increasingly circulating as a term to describe a new field of interest. But many academic fields including history, philosophy, anthropology, and Area studies already engage with martial arts in their own particular way. Therefore, is there really such a thing as a unique field of martial arts studies? Martial Arts Studies is the first book to engage directly with these questions. It assesses the multiplicity and heterogeneity of possible approaches to martial arts studies, exploring orientations and limitations of existing approaches. It makes a case for constructing the field of martial arts studies in terms of key coordinates from post-structuralism, cultural studies, media studies, and post-colonialism. By using these anti-disciplinary approaches to disrupt the approaches of other disciplines, Martial Arts Studies proposes a field that both emerges out of and differs from its many disciplinary locations.

Book Opening Closed Guard the Origins of Jiu Jitsu in Brazil

Download or read book Opening Closed Guard the Origins of Jiu Jitsu in Brazil written by robert drysdale and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-26 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the origins of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Is it merely a by-product--a rebel offspring--of Judo? What was the nature and content of the art that Mitsuyo Maeda, a.k.a. "Count Koma", and other Japanese were teaching in the Amazon? Was it Judo? Jiu-Jitsu? His own personal fight-tested style, built on a foundation of Judo and informed by his dozens and dozens of matches around the world? What was the bridge between the art he learned at the Kodokan and the Brazilian style that claims him as its godfather: a style now practiced by millions worldwide (and growing bigger every day)? Should Maeda even be at the center of this story? And what role did Carlos and Hélio Gracie play in all of this? Did they "invent" BJJ? Would BJJ exist without them? And, if so, what--if anything--did they create? And why does this history matter to the average BJJ practitioner today? Any history possesses its official narrative with its own favorite characters and events. But true history is seldom simple, and more oft than not the real story is far richer than the popular version that is widely repeated and handed down. The history of BJJ and MMA in Brazil doesn't escape this paradigm. The recent renaissance in research in regards to the history of martial arts in Brazil led to the author's curiosity, which in turn led to the documentary Closed-Guard: The Origins of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, which in turn led to this book. This manuscript started as an account of the author's recollections of the film's production, and quickly grew into much more. Opening Closed Guard: The Story Behind the Film contains conclusions, analysis, and historical interpretations, as well as the story behind the documentary itself and the many challenges it faced along the way. It contains interviews, research articles pertaining to the history of Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, as well as the author's own take on the current state of BJJ and MMA. Finally, it is the story of the author rediscovering his love for Jiu-Jitsu in a completely new and unexpected way. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Born in the US from a Brazilian mother and American father, and having spent his life between these two countries, Robert Drysdale remains the only American competitor to have ever won both the IBJJF and ADCC World Championships, the two most prestigious tournaments in all of Jiu-Jitsu. Furthermore, he has also cultivated a career in MMA, both as a fighter and as a coach. The author also holds a Bachelor's Degree in History, as well as a long-held passion for this discipline. He lives in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he teaches Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA. He is also the co-founder of the international team Zenith Jiu-Jitsu, and is the father of two girls.
