Download or read book Keep Calm and Trust the Science written by Luke O'Neill and published by Gill & Macmillan Ltd. This book was released on 2021-10-29 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Luke O'Neill has become one of the most well-known and trusted voices of Ireland's COVID-19 pandemic, thrust into the spotlight as we struggled to make sense of a crisis that saw the country grind to a halt. In these personal diaries, Luke reveals what life was like behind the scenes as he endeavoured to keep calm and trust that the science would save us. Luke's lockdown diaries show the highs and lows of work at the cutting edge in his Trinity College lab, as well as his experience of the disappointments and the breakthroughs in science around the world, and ultimately the contribution scientists made to the health outcomes of millions globally. Shot through with the natural positivity and humour that have made Luke a home-grown hero, Keep Calm and Trust the Science is a compelling account of a dramatic year in Irish history from one of its key players.

Book Tap Dancing on Everest

Download or read book Tap Dancing on Everest written by Mimi Zieman and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plan was outrageous: A small team of four climbers would attempt a new route on the East Face of Mt. Everest, considered the most remote and dangerous side of the mountain and only successfully climbed once before. Unlike the first larger team, Mimi Zieman’s team would climb without using supplemental oxygen, porter support, or chance for rescue. She would accompany the climbers as the doctor—and only woman—although she was still in her third year of medical school. Full of self-doubt, Zieman grappled with whether to go but couldn’t resist the call of the mountains. On Everest, when three climbers disappeared during their summit attempt, she reached the knife edge of her limits and dug deeply to fight for the climbers’ lives and to find her voice. Sparkling with suspense and vulnerability, Tap Dancing on Everest is a coming-of-age story about the risks we take to become our truest selves. Zieman weaves her childhood as the daughter of immigrants raised in 1970’s New York City, her father a Holocaust survivor, with adventure and medicine, capturing the curiosity and awe of a young woman as she faces down messages to stay small and safe and ventures into the unknown.

We see it all the time: We must establish a career before looking for a relationship. We must find love before feeling fulfilled. But by far, the most common conditions we put on ourselves revolve around our weight—no love until we lose the weight, no pursuing a dream until we lose the weight, no happiness until we lose the weight. But now there’s a better option. Using tapping, also known as EFT, Jessica Ortner walks you through a process that helps you drop stress so you can drop pounds—without dieting, deprivation, or extreme exercise. Say good-bye to the cravings, panic, and self-doubt that keep you in a constant fight against your body! Using her own struggles with weight loss, along with success stories of some of the thousands of women she’s worked with, Jessica teaches you not only the basics of tapping but also how to use it to address the deeper facets of your weight and self-worth challenges. Book Sparring with Smokin Joe

Download or read book Sparring with Smokin Joe written by Glenn Lewis and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-02-10 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This Maileresque combination of personal reflection, boxing analysis, and sports biography is a must read for fight fans...." Booklist, Starred Review An intimate portrait of Joe Frazier, whose ferocious rivalry with Muhammad Ali made them both boxing legends and cultural touchstones for an era. Just in time for the fiftieth anniversary of the Fight of the Century (Ali–Frazier I), Sparring with Smokin’ Joe provides a penetrating, at times brutally candid, look at legendary champion Joe Frazier. Glenn Lewis spent several months in the gym, on the road, and in verbal tussles with Frazier in 1980, when Frazier was at a crossroads in his life and career. Lewis recounts Frazier’s candid takes on his still-recent Hall-of-Fame career, wars with Ali, and hard-scrabble roots. Frazier also reflects on Ali’s upcoming comeback fight against Larry Holmes, his own possible return to the ring, preparing his son Marvis for a pro boxing debut, and the impact of racial tensions and cultural upheaval on his fighting legacy. Sparring with Smokin’ Joe reveals compelling, never-before-heard anecdotes that give new insight into the usually private Frazier, including how Ali’s verbal attacks on Frazier alienated him from his own people and continued to trouble him long after retiring from the ring. An intimate portrait of a legendary fighter, Sparring with Smokin’ Joe finally shares Frazier’s side of an unforgettable rivalry.

It doesn’t keep me from remembering the terrifying night my life changed, the night my true love died. I was nearly seventeen. Life goes on, but the secret I keep is that I still talk to him in my dreams. That was getting me by until Tabron showed up—or, more specifically, until the six-foot-two brute of a Viking whisked me off to another planet because his leader is dying. And the joy didn’t end there. I’m being forced to choose a mate. The Brausa are facing extinction. Tabron has no need for a mate, himself, and he’s told me as much. Multiple times. What he does have are hands and wicked lips that stir feelings I thought lost forever. Choosing him (just to play along until I can find a way home) seems to irk him and I find this surprisingly fun. But surviving a hidden conspiracy and the dangers of this alien place might be more difficult than I could ever imagine… Book Three of The Dreamwalkers

Book Daddy s Girl

    Book Details:
  • Author : Charlotte Vale-Allen
  • Publisher : Island Nation Press LLC
  • Release : 2002
  • ISBN : 1892738341
  • Pages : 112 pages

Download or read book Daddy s Girl written by Charlotte Vale-Allen and published by Island Nation Press LLC. This book was released on 2002 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Writing Daddy's GirlAfter I had been through many versions of the manuscript (written over almost a decade) I decided that for this book to have validity it would be necessary not only to show the past but also to give a picture of the present-illustrating how the events of my childhood affected me at the time, as well as later in life as an adult and a parent.Given that I wrote the book in the first place as a document that I hoped would be useful to others who'd suffered abuse and also to professionals, I felt it was very important to present detailed portraits of the child I was and the woman I grew to be (in large measure as a result of trying to cope with the long-term effects of the abuse.) As well, I thought it was vital to illustrate how fallout from the abuse can be felt down through the generations, if one fails to exercise awareness and caution. So the book weaves back and forth between past and present (the present being 1979, when the final version was completed). I also had to decide at the very start whether I was going to dole out snippets of truth or be completely truthful and address the issue as fully as I was able. There seemed no point to writing an autobiographical account of incest if I was going to be anything less than completely truthful. It was not difficult to tell the truth, nor was the writing of the book a cathartic experience, as many have imagined it to be. The fact is that I had long-since confronted my personal demons and had managed to relegate the past to the past-something exceedingly difficult for many victims of any/all forms of abuse to do.A few years ago in correcting the page proofs of a new British edition of the book, I reread DADDY'S GIRL, and was gratified by what I'd written. (Often, with my novels, I am not at all happy when I reread them.) I think that as an author I have little, if any, objectivity about my work once it's completed and so am not necessarily a good judge of it. But I am proud of DADDY'S GIRL. Since its publication in 1980 it has been of help to a lot of people. And, ultimately, it's my way of returning some measure of the kindness and attention people showed me when I was working my way along the rough roadway toward my future.
