Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moving to America turns H&à's life inside out. For all the 10 years of her life, H&à has only known Saigon: the thrills of its markets, the joy of its traditions, the warmth of her friends close by, and the beauty of her very own papaya tree. But now the Vietnam War has reached her home. H&à and her family are forced to flee as Saigon falls, and they board a ship headed toward hope. In America, H&à discovers the foreign world of Alabama: the coldness of its strangers, the dullness of its food, the strange shape of its landscape, and the strength of her very own family. This is the moving story of one girl's year of change, dreams, grief, and healing as she journeys from one country to another, one life to the next.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The natural role of the present day man is anxiety. The story of stress is as old as humanity. Life itself centers on stress and how to conquer it. The word stress cuts across all disciplines. In physics and engineering it connotes load, in biology it produces elasticity, in physiology stress could be positive or negative producing abnormal limit (higher or lower) from the normal and in pathology it could lead to organ failure. In view of the numerous consequences of stress which could lead to diseases and emotional or mental disorders makes this book “manage your stress: a practical approach” a must read material. There is therefore a crucial need to enlighten and educate everyone with this basic, simple to read and practical approach to managing stress. It should be noted that everyone encounters stress but the response to stress varies from person to person and from occupation to occupation. The author as an educationist has taken steps to elaborate on basic issues in stress and how to manage it. Most exciting to me are the quotations concerning stress and the nutritional value of common foods and drinks on stress. Finally, am compelled to accept that this book is resourceful, with a wide appeal, easy to read and also acceptable to most strata of the society. I strongly recommend this book to the young and old, professionals and non-professionals, academicians and non-academicians, and to the benefit of mankind. Book Pawpaw

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andrew Moore
  • Publisher : Chelsea Green Publishing
  • Release : 2015-08-05
  • ISBN : 1603585974
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book Pawpaw written by Andrew Moore and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The largest edible fruit native to the United States tastes like a cross between a banana and a mango. It grows wild in twenty-six states, gracing Eastern forests each fall with sweet-smelling, tropical-flavored abundance. Historically, it fed and sustained Native Americans and European explorers, presidents, and enslaved African Americans, inspiring folk songs, poetry, and scores of place names from Georgia to Illinois. Its trees are an organic grower’s dream, requiring no pesticides or herbicides to thrive, and containing compounds that are among the most potent anticancer agents yet discovered. So why have so few people heard of the pawpaw, much less tasted one? In Pawpaw—a 2016 James Beard Foundation Award nominee in the Writing & Literature category—author Andrew Moore explores the past, present, and future of this unique fruit, traveling from the Ozarks to Monticello; canoeing the lower Mississippi in search of wild fruit; drinking pawpaw beer in Durham, North Carolina; tracking down lost cultivars in Appalachian hollers; and helping out during harvest season in a Maryland orchard. Along the way, he gathers pawpaw lore and knowledge not only from the plant breeders and horticulturists working to bring pawpaws into the mainstream (including Neal Peterson, known in pawpaw circles as the fruit’s own “Johnny Pawpawseed”), but also regular folks who remember eating them in the woods as kids, but haven’t had one in over fifty years. As much as Pawpaw is a compendium of pawpaw knowledge, it also plumbs deeper questions about American foodways—how economic, biologic, and cultural forces combine, leading us to eat what we eat, and sometimes to ignore the incredible, delicious food growing all around us. If you haven’t yet eaten a pawpaw, this book won’t let you rest until you do.

Book excerpt: Wise-cracking Wiley Cantrell is loud and roaringly outrageous -- and he needs to be to keep his deeply religious neighbors and family in the Deep South at bay. A failed writer on food stamps, Wiley works a minimum wage job and barely manages to keep himself and his deaf son, Noah, more than a stone’s throw away from Dumpster-diving. Noah was a meth baby and has the birth defects to prove it. He sees how lonely his father is and tries to help him find a boyfriend while Wiley struggles to help Noah have a relationship with his incarcerated mother, who believes the best way to feed a child is with a slingshot. No wonder Noah becomes Wiley’s biggest supporter when Boston nurse Jackson Ledbetter walks past Wiley’s cash register and sets his sugar tree on fire. Jackson falls like a wet mule wearing concrete boots for Wiley’s sense of humor. And while Wiley represents much of the best of the South, Jackson is hiding a secret that could threaten this new family in the making. When North meets South, the cultural misunderstandings are many, but so are the laughs, and the tears, but, as they say down in Dixie, it’s all good.

Download or read book See What I See written by Craig E. Whitsey and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2015-03-09 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being blessed to have traveled extensively around the world, I have had the pleasure to truly see the differences and the similarities of all humans upon this earth. It is not an easy thing to see people suffering in their lives and not be moved to some kind of action or at the least speak openly about it. Bringing attention to things that can be changed, that often is ignored, because no one wants to be responsible for speaking out against wrong. Seeing that if a situation isn't directly affecting a person, then it seems to not be important to help change it. I am compelled to often write about the common things in life that effects every human, yet for some reason or another, no one wants to address. Life is about growth, not living in denial about what can be made right. Everyone in this life deserves a chance to have joy, peace and happiness, without others pressing their ways upon them. I believe that, we are our worst enemies and until we come to the realization that most of our suffering in life comes from ourselves, and we have the power within ourselves to change that. Then and only then will this world be the place it was intended to be. I encourage all who read this book, to be encouraged, and know that there is nothing in this world you can't overcome. Just believe in yourself, and never give up.
