Book excerpt: In Lost on the Mountain Laya Whisten sat and watched the life fade from her husband Cal as he was dying with scarlet fever. She was left to run a 2000 acre spread, called the Swinging W Ranch. Shed made a solemn promise to herself when Cal died that she would never get married again and she had kept that promise for 8 years. Until she met sheriff Cole Walters, of Butte Montana. She had risen on a cold December morning, made a circle on the window pane to see out, finding a menagerie of snow and ice cycles everywhere. She was headed to her cabin in the mountain and knew she had to get there before nightfall. She spent every winter there gather stray cattle, holding them in the barn until she could bring them back down the mountain during the spring. She saddled Nick, her favorite horse and headed into the timber line. When she was about three miles from home the snow became heavier making it difficult to see where she was going. She had heard a whimper coming from a bush near the trail. She slid off her hoarse to investigate and found it to be a baby wolf. The little wolf refused to let her pick him up until she had fed him several biscuits from her saddle bag. They formed a bond of love, which would last on through the years. He protected her, and found her, when she was lost in a blinding snow storm in the mountains. Her and the wolf pup encountered a grizzly bear on the way back to the cabin, as they were coming from sheltering Nick in the barn when they first arrived. During the night as she dozed in her rocking chair in front of the fireplace, she awoke to a noise outside the cabin. Thinking the grizzly had returned, she grabbed the gun from over the fireplace and silently eased to the window. She saw a silhouette of a man over the saddle of his horse. Laya found a bullet lodged in his right shoulder and knew that she had to get it out. She later finds out he is sheriff Cole Walters of Beatue, Montana and he had been chasing the outlaw who had burned his home three years earlier, with his wife and child trapped inside. Both died in the fire. Cole fell in love with Laya the minute he opened his eyes and saw her sitting by his bed waiting for him to regain consciousness. Even stressed from her administration of taking the bullet from his shoulder, she was the most beautiful person Cole had ever laid eyes on. It took a long time to win Laya over and return his love, but Cole refused to give up. He had to have her.

Book excerpt: Terrorist activities in the United States are not confined to foreign agents. Marvin "Ike" Miller is an escaped federal prisoner: a fugitive terrorist with a new twist, a load of hate over the killing of his half-brother by ATF, and a plot to bring martial law and chaos to America. Bugs is the story of one man's efforts to destroy the plan and Ike Miller in the process. And he has less than two weeks to do it. Hays McKay is a pipe smoking investigator with a small agency in Columbus, Ohio, who stumbles onto Miller’s plot while looking into the death of a black fisherman, affectionately known as Bugs, in the eastern part of the state. McKay is analytical, intuitive, funny, passionate, yet totally without feeling when someone close to him is threatened, which is evident when he executes two men who attempt to rape his fiancé. But he has his own demons: booze, a past that includes a tour in Granada as a Marine sniper, a lost love, and time spent in Pakistan, some of it along the Afghan border.

Download or read book To Be Fair written by Ben Fenton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Ben's book is an elegant and essential intervention in an era of enervating culture wars. It asks and answers nothing less than the most important question of our time: how can we recover the ability to talk to one another?' - Sathnam Sanghera, author of Empireland What does it mean to be fair? Why do we feel unfairness so strongly? What has happened to us today that we spend more time condemning each other's views than giving each other a fair hearing? The idea of fairness is one of the most commonly-expressed concepts, yet nobody ever stops to think what it really means. We all simply take the word 'fair' for granted. In this polemical guide to fairness, Ben Fenton explains the meaning of the word, how it fits into our genetic make-up and why we need our innate sense of fair play now more than ever. Fenton explores the idea that the unconscious procedure that humans go through in deciding fairness is the vital balancing act between competition and cooperation, the two driving forces that have made us the super-species of Planet Earth. He describes the neurology, anthropology, psychology, history and future of fairness and looks at how it affects our lives through politics, law, sex, religion, race, sport, business and even war. As a reporter of thirty years' experience, Fenton brings all his skills to bear in a lively and challenging description of the profound inner meaning of a throwaway phrase and why it matters so much to every single person in the world to seek To Be Fair. PART I – WHY SHOULD WE TRY TO BE FAIR? 1. Why You Should Read This Book 2. The Principles of Fairness 3. The Neurology and Psychology of Fairness 4. Fairness in History 5. Is Fairness a Creation of the English speaking World? (Spoiler alert: No) PART II – WHAT DOES FAIRNESS LOOK LIKE IN THE MODERN WORLD? 6. Fairness in Sport (and other forms of War) 7. Fairness in Business and Economics 8. Fairness in Law and Taxation 9. Fairness in Communication and Technology 10. Fairness in Politics and Government 11. Fairness in Human Relationships 12.
