Download or read book Alfredo s Journey written by Alfredo Zotti and published by Modern History Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a just a journey, Alfredo gives us a blueprint for humane treatment of mental illness In 1981, twenty-three-year old Alfredo Zotti began his lifelong challenge of living with Bipolar II Disorder. He quickly hit rock bottom, spending time as a homeless person and turning to street drugs and alcohol to medicate his symptoms. After hospitalization and careful outpatient monitoring, he became a successful musician and completed university. In 2004, he started to mentor sufferers of mental illness, and together, they developed an online journal. Alfredo now sees mental illness from a new perspective, not of disadvantages but advantages. In his words: "Having a mental illness can be a blessing if we work on ourselves." In this memoir and critique of mental illness, the reader will learn: ÿ * How empathic listening and being with someone can help calm that person's symptoms ÿ *ÿThe power of singing to create a safe space in a community ÿ *ÿWhy spirituality can be a key component in the healing process ÿ *ÿThe connections between mental illness, artistic expression, and people who think differently ÿ *ÿThe impact of childhood trauma on our psyche and its role in mental illness ÿ *ÿThe dangers of antipsychotics and antidepressants ÿ *ÿThe amazing connection between heart and brain and how we can cultivate it ÿ *ÿThe challenges of love and marriage between partners with Bipolar Disorder "Alfredo's story and his insights into the causes and treatment of mental ill-health are incredibly moving and impressive. His humanity, intelligence, creativity and his generosity and compassion towards people affected by mental illness and dedicated mental health professionals shine through the pages of his book."ÿ -- Professor Patrick McGorry, AO MD PhD, Executive Director, OYH Research Centre, University of Melbourne "As a clinician and academic, one can study and research ever known aspect of a disorder and write scholarly articles for learned journals, but none of this holds the potency of an individual relaying his or her lived experience. Alfredo does just this in his inimitable style, offering hope at every juncture to those who travel a similar road. The story should be read by clinicians, academics and sufferers alike." --Professor Trevor Waring AM, Clinical Psychologist, Con-Joint Professor of Psychology, University of Newcastle Learn more at www.AlfredoZotti.com From the World Voices Series at Modern History Press www.ModernHistoryPress.co

Download or read book Casting Shadows written by Michael J. Smith Sr. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-08-05 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a fictional work that encompasses modern counterterrorism with current terrorist tactics that have been thwarted or investigated by respected counterterrorism agencies. These scenarios are linked together with the formation of a special privately owned terrorism task force that is designed to counter the weakening of the United States government and growth of a more sinister radical Islamic faction. These all take place in real locations with a cast of characters building as the book progresses. The title Casting Shadows has multiple meanings, first of which is the casting or formation of both groups; second, it refers to the methods used by these organizations to move forward; and lastly, it refers to the shadows and images of people burned on buildings after several nuclear explosions. Casting Shadows is a suspense thriller with law enforcement and military leanings, twisting back and forth between sides. This story line gets a little more complicated when more sides appear. Its not just a good guy meets bad guy book but has many dimensions of good and evil and the perception of either may be different, depending on the angle youre witnessing. Who are the real bad guys? The time line carries the reader through the development of the most sinister plot in the history of mankind. Complex and very involved, the plot destroys believers and nonbelievers alike. The sacrifice of their own people provides a screen that ultimately weakens their objective. Islamic radical factions from around the world bond together to create the ultimate union; this union called Al Infitar is attempting to finish the jihad their forefathers have started. With just a small force with perfect resolve, funds, and opportunity, they attempt to complete their jihad. Total Islam is their goal, and total destruction is their tool. Acquiring nukes for the black market, the brothers embark on a slow methodical plan to destroy the Western world as we know it. Is this book really fiction? Your call! The techniques are real. The targets are real, the motivation is real, and the desire is real. Even more frightening than that, the plots are real and are being attempted as you read this. Islamic radicals have stepped up attempts to destroy our way of life. The inner jihad they seek or the total acceptance of Allah by Muslims have now become an outward call for war against Western civilization and all non-Muslims. Jihad is being called in mosques throughout the world, and groups are forming for the final push. The Koran calls all Muslims to jihad, which by definition is the inner struggle of an individual to fight evil, the sort of yin and yang of Muslims. The radical leaders interpret this differently and call for the death of any nonbeliever. Who are they speaking of? Who are the nonbelievers? As you read this book, pay particular attention to the dates because in the beginning, the planning stages cover several years and locations. This is typical of radical plots, and the formation of cells by their recruiters takes time and large sums of money. What allows the fertile ground to produce such plots to blossom is the weakened state of the United States and European governments. This weakness will always be exploited, as the enemy will be constantly vigilant for such cracks in the armor. Enjoy this book the way it was intended, not to terrify but to enlighten and make these attempts public. Yes, they can happen. Yes, they are trying. And yes, we can stop them. So is this really a fictional book or a book that hedges on insanity? Is this book a recipe for disaster or too far-fetched to believe? Read it and make your own decision. This book, like real life, will continue. The plots will always be there, and the desire will continue. The will to survive is stronger than humans can comprehend. For a nation to survive, it sometimes takes continuous vigilance and strength. When one or the other is lacking, then evil creeps in to steal what it can. After 9/11

Download or read book Dogfight A Love Story written by Matt Burgess and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2011-09-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Jonathan Lethem did for Brooklyn, Matt Burgess does for Queens in this exuberant and brilliant debut novel about a young drug dealer having a very bad weekend. Alfredo Batista has some worries. Okay, a lot of worries. His older brother, Jose—sorry, Tariq—is returning from a stretch in prison after an unsuccessful robbery, a burglary that Alfredo was supposed to be part of. So now everyone thinks Alfredo snitched on his brother, which may have something to do with the fact that Alfredo is now dating Tariq’s ex-girlfriend, Isabel, who is eight months pregnant. Tariq’s violent streak is probably #1 worry on Alfredo’s list. Also, he needs to steal a pit bull. For the homecoming dogfight. Burgess brings to life the rich and vivid milieu of his hometown native Queens in all its glorious variety. Here is the real New York, a place where Pakistanis, Puerto Ricans, Haitians, An glos, African Americans, and West Indians scrap and mingle and love. But the real star here is Burgess’s incredible ear for language—the voices of his characters leap off the page in riotous, spot-on dialogue. The outer boroughs have their own language, where a polite greeting is fraught with menace, and an insult can be the expression of the most tender love. With a story as intricately plotted as a Shakespearean comedy—or revenge tragedy, for that matter—and an electrically colloquial prose style, Dogfight, a Love Story establishes Matt Burgess as an exuberant new voice in contemporary literature. The great Queens novel has arrived.
Download or read book The Sleepwalkers Ballad written by Yolanda Ortal-Miranda and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2008-11-24 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story of love, idealism, courage and betrayals takes place against the turmoil of the end of Batistas government and first three years of Castros. Besides the real-life characters of Batista, Castro and Che Guevara, the Revolution itself is an important character, making this work both a screenplay and a presentation of documented historical facts. Riveting parts of this story include the attack on the Presidential Palace; the guerrilla presence in La Sierra; Castros victory; the Agrarian, Monetary, and Housing Reforms; the government takeover of all banks and private businesses; the emergence of a strong underground movement; and the Bay of Pigs Invasion, with the often glossed-over involvement of President Kennedy. Much of the story is presented through unbiased dialogue and dramatizations of actual events. Two real-life characters, Echeverra and Manoln Guillotwho became significant figures in Cuban historyexemplify the struggle for freedom and justice against both regimes. Parallel to the socio-political drama is the development of the love story between the two protagonists, Mara and Alfredo. Alfredo believes in Castros promises of a just Revolution and joins Castro in La Sierra, rising to the rank of Comandante. Disenchanted as he witnesses Castros dictatorial behavior once in power, e.g., appointing himself Prime Minister, removing President Urrutia from office, and betraying the promises of a just Agrarian Reform, Alfredo and Mara once again join an underground movement, now against Castro, with Manoln Guillot functioning as Chief of Intelligence of the MRR, the strongest anti-Castro movement in the Island. After the failure of the invasion, Alfredo makes an unsuccessful attempt on Castros life. Immediately imprisoned, Alfredo is submitted to endless tortures and humiliations, but he never reveals the identity of Carlos (one of the noms de guerre of Manoln Guillot). At the end, a fascinating confrontation between the tyrant, Fidel Castro, and the idealistic Alfredo, reveals the strengths and flaws of two very different human beings.
