One of the founders of the Massachusetts Bay Company, William and his family left Cowes for America on the ship Ambrose in the Winthrop fleet on 29 March 1630. Upon arrival in America they first settled in Dorchester, Massachausetts later founding Springfield. Descendants and relatives lived mainly in Massachusetts and Connecticut.
