Download or read book The Culture of the Chinese Minority in Indonesia written by Leo Suryadinata and published by Cavendish Square Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ethnic Chinese minority in Indonesia is a heterogeneous group. Many have been acculturated and have generated an Indonesian Chinese culture that is unique and yet deeply rooted in Indonesian society. In education, literature and the press, the ethnic Chinese have been largely assimilated into local society. In religion, assimilation has taken on a different form: Chinese minority religions are highly Indonesianized while retaining some Chinese characteristics. Ironically, the success of the ethnic Chinese in the economic field can be attributed not to their acculturation, but to their migrant culture and ethos, as well as the Chinese networks in Southeast Asia and beyond. The ten papers in this book some previously published, all substantially revised and updated to include recent developments adopt a thematic and historical approach in examining the developing of ethnic Chinese culture and society in Indonesia.

Download or read book Asian Social Work written by Ian Shaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The countries of East and Southeast Asia, taken as a whole, display a laboratory of social and political conditions, with individual countries presenting a variety of political, cultural and social characteristics. Some with one-party state systems, others with stable liberal democracies and yet others with more fragile democratic systems. As such the region presents a unique opportunity to examine the relationship between diverse national environments and social work education regimes. In this book, social work educators and theorists from around East and Southeast Asia provide accounts of the social work programs within the higher education systems of their respective countries and compare them to those of their neighbours. This is the first book to offer a structured account of how social work and social work education have emerged and finds their present place in the historical, economic, political, urban/rural and higher education contexts of Southeast Asia and East Asia. Experts from the region assess the extent to which these countries’ systems possess a collective coherence, while examining the diversity among them.

Download or read book Language Policy in Superdiverse Indonesia written by Subhan Zein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia has an extreme diversity of linguistic wealth, with 707 languages by one count, or 731 languages and more than 1,100 dialects in another estimate, spoken by more than 600 ethnicities spread across 17,504 islands in the archipelago. Smaller, locally used indigenous languages jostle for survival alongside Indonesian, which is the national language, regional lingua francas, major indigenous languages, heritage languages, sign languages and world languages such as English, Arabic and Mandarin, not to mention emerging linguistic varieties and practices of language mixing. How does the government manage these languages in different domains such as education, the media, the workplace and the public while balancing concerns over language endangerment and the need for participation in the global community? Subhan Zein asserts that superdiversity is the key to understanding and assessing these intricate issues and their complicated, contested and innovative responses in the complex, dynamic and polycentric sociolinguistic situation in Indonesia that he conceptualises as superglossia. This offers an opportunity for us to delve more deeply into such a context through the language and superdiversity perspective that is in ascendancy. Zein examines emerging themes that have been dominating language policy discourse including status, prestige, corpus, acquisition, cultivation, language shift and endangerment, revitalisation, linguistic genocide and imperialism, multilingual education, personnel policy, translanguaging, family language policy and global English. These topical areas are critically discussed in an integrated manner against Indonesia’s elaborate socio-cultural, political and religious backdrop as well as the implementation of regional autonomy. In doing so, Zein identifies strategies for language policy to help inform scholarship and policymaking while providing a frame of reference for the adoption of the superdiversity perspective on polity-specific language policy in other parts of the world.
