Book Kazi Nazrul Islam s Journalism

Download or read book Kazi Nazrul Islam s Journalism written by Arka Deb and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-01-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrated as the national poet of Bangladesh and fondly commemorated in India as the 'Rebel Poet', Kazi Nazrul Islam (1899–1976) is widely known for his poetry and music, although his political philosophy and anti-colonial revolutionary sentiments are best expressed in his journalistic writings. Nazrul's journalistic career spans across three key newspapers: Nabajug, Dhumketu and Langol. Editorials in Nabajug addressed a diverse range of subjects, including untouchability, racial discrimination, power structure and the importance of communal harmony. Dhumketu, perhaps the most significant amongst Nazrul's revolutionary contributions, became a testimonial to the reclamation of India's complete freedom, which eventually proved perilous for Nazrul. Langol, the mouthpiece of the Labour Swaraj Party, was the first Bengali paper specifically for and by the working class. It provided voice to the labourers and peasants, speaking self-reflexively about the nation's agro-economy. Kazi Nazrul Islam's Journalism brings together for the first time in English Nazrul's editorials published in the colonial Indian subcontinent and showcases Nazrul's far-reaching views on subjects close to his heart. By critically examining these essays, Arka Deb establishes Nazrul's relevance in the current times.

Book Empire Media and the Autonomous Woman

Download or read book Empire Media and the Autonomous Woman written by Esha Niyogi De and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing lessons from the intersection of literature, photography, cinema, television, dance-drama, and choreography, this book presents a unique analysis of Indian activist thought spread over two centuries. In this wide-spanning work, Esha Niyogi De argues that the 'individual' has been creatively indigenized in modern non-Western cultures: thinkers attentive to gender in postcolonial cultures embrace selected ethical premises of the Enlightenment and its human rights discourse while they refuse possessive individualism. Debating influential schools of postcolonial and transnational studies, she weaves her radical argument through a rich tapestry of gender portrayals drawn from two moments of modern Indian thought: the rise of humanism in the colony and the growth of new individualism in contemporary liberalized India. From autobiographical texts by nineteenth-century Bengali prostitutes, point-of-view photography, as well as woman-centred dance-dramas and essays by Rabindranath Tagore to representations of Tagore's works on mainstream television, video, and stage; feminist cinema, choreography, and performance by Aparna Sen and Manjusri Chaki-Sircar respectively—the book makes use of these and much more to creatively engage with empire, media, and gender.

Download or read book Wild Women written by Arundhathi Subramaniam and published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited. This book was released on 2024-03-21 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The names of Mirabai, Akka Mahadevi and Andal, are known to many, but innumerable women poets remain relatively unknown. When we hear of them, it is invariably as plaster saints or meek followers. It is time to smell the danger in their words again, to listen to their feral sensuality, their searing questions about custodians of gender and faith. It is time to tune into their brazenness, their heartbreaking longing. Not just for their sake but for ours too. In this anthology of sacred poetry that arrives after the much-loved book, Eating God, Arundhathi Subramaniam weaves together haunting voices of, by and for women across the Indian subcontinent. Here is a lineage of audacious woman-centred spirituality that traverses the poetry of ancient Buddhist nuns, Bhakti and Sufi mystics, tantrikas and Vedantins. There are women here, and men singing as women, and both raising their voices in praise of the sacred feminine. Brought to us through translation, these poems surprise with how intimately familiar their ravenous yearnings and ecstatic freedoms are. Wild Women invites us to reclaim an explosive inheritance of female power, rapture and wisdom.

This edited collection explores both Gandhi’s own approach to the press, but also how different advocacy groups and the media, within India and overseas, engaged with Gandhi, his ideology and methodology, to further their own causes. The timeframe of the book extends from the late nineteenth century up to the present, and the case studies draw inspiration from a number of disciplinary approaches.
