Download or read book The Cool Kawaii written by Thorsten Botz-Bornstein and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012-07-10 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the turn of the millennium, international youth culture is dominated by mainly two types of aesthetics: the African American cool, which, propelled by Hip-Hop music, has become the world's favorite youth culture; and the Japanese aesthetics of kawaii or cute, that is distributed internationally by Japan's powerful anime industry. The USA and Japan are cultural superpowers and global trendsetters because they make use of two particular concepts that hide complex structures under their simple surfaces and are difficult to define, but continue to fascinate the world: cool and kawaii. The Cool-Kawaii: Afro-Japanese Aesthetics and New World Modernity, by Thorsten Botz-Bornstein, analyzes these attitudes and explains the intrinsic powers that are leading to a fusion of both aesthetics. Cool and kawaii are expressions set against the oppressive homogenizations that occur within official modern cultures, but they are also catalysts of modernity. Cool and kawaii do not refer us back to a pre-modern ethnic past. Just like the cool African American man has almost no relationship with traditional African ideas about masculinity, the kawaii shTjo is not the personification of the traditional Japanese ideal of the feminine, but signifies an ideological institution of women based on Japanese modernity in the Meiji period, that is, a feminine image based on westernization. At the same time, cool and kawaii do not transport us into a futuristic, impersonal world of hypermodernity based on assumptions of constant modernization. Cool and kawaii stand for another type of modernity, which is not technocratic, but rather 'Dandyist' and closely related to the search for human dignity and liberation.

Download or read book Toil Trouble written by Augusten Burroughs and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the number one New York Times bestselling author comes another stunning memoir that is tender, touching...and just a little spooky. "Here’s a partial list of things I don’t believe in: God. The Devil. Heaven. Hell. Bigfoot. Ancient Aliens. Past lives. Life after death. Vampires. Zombies. Reiki. Homeopathy. Rolfing. Reflexology. Note that 'witches' and 'witchcraft' are absent from this list. The thing is, I wouldn’t believe in them, and I would privately ridicule any idiot who did, except for one thing: I am a witch." For as long as Augusten Burroughs could remember, he knew things he shouldn't have known. He manifested things that shouldn't have come to pass. And he told exactly no one about this, save one person: his mother. His mother reassured him that it was all perfectly normal, that he was descended from a long line of witches, going back to the days of the early American colonies. And that this family tree was filled with witches. It was a bond that he and his mother shared--until the day she left him in the care of her psychiatrist to be raised in his family (but that's a whole other story). After that, Augusten was on his own. On his own to navigate the world of this tricky power; on his own to either use or misuse this gift. From the hilarious to the terrifying, Toil & Trouble is a chronicle of one man's journey to understand himself, to reconcile the powers he can wield with things with which he is helpless. There are very few things that are coincidences, as you will learn in Toil & Trouble. Ghosts are real, trees can want to kill you, beavers are the spawn of Satan, houses are alive, and in the end, love is the most powerful magic of all.
Download or read book Magic Betrayed written by Elizabeth Kirke and published by Elizabeth Kirke. This book was released on 2021-04-25 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Never again must another Arcanist rise… They say it took one hundred magical beings to defeat the first Arcanist. Great care was taken to ensure the secret to his malevolent power died with him. Now the brutal reign of the Arcanist has become little more than a scary bedtime story. And yet, the descendants of his loyal followers have sworn to find a way to bestow his dark magic upon another. If they succeed, they’ll unleash a new terror upon an unsuspecting world. It has been five years since I found out I’m a witch and, at last, I have taken the final plunge into the magical world: I moved. Now, I’m living with in New York with my closest paranormal friends and interning at MES, the Magical Enforcement and Secrecy agency. Other than having to lie to my non-magic family, things are going great. Except that magics keep going missing… Tasked with figuring out if these seemingly random disappearances are connected, my friends and I find ourselves on the edge of a huge breakthrough; there might be a cult of witches and wizards practicing an ancient, forbidden magic. Worse, it seems like one of them is inside MES. There’s nobody to trust but each other and the deeper we go, the clearer it becomes that someone is trying to stop our investigation, even if it means using dark magic and deadly force. Magic Betrayed is Book Four in the Urban Fantasy series, More than Magic, featuring witches, vampires, werewolves, and more. Please note, this book starts the six-book Rise of the Arcanist arc, which takes place five years after the original trilogy. As the characters have ‘grown up’ so has the content: this book and the following five are darker, with more foul language, and certain doors that are ajar instead of closed. As these were originally written as a serial, they are shorter and will feel more connected than the previous three. But, you can still expect your favorite characters, the snark, and the heart. If you like your magic mixed with a little mystery and sweet romance, dive into your copy today. Also available on Audiobook.

Book excerpt: Acclaimed author Jen Holling presents the stunning final novel in her sensual trilogy, set against the windswept hills of Scotland, about a trio of sisters with witchcraft -- and passion -- in their blood. Rose, the youngest of the MacDonell sisters, is more concerned with her father's mysterious illness than with her impending marriage to her childhood sweetheart. A gifted but frustrated healer, she decides to beg help from William MacKay -- a reclusive laird who is renowned not only for his ferocity, but also for his healing powers. Denied entry to his fortress in the cold, harsh mountains of the far northwestern highlands, Rose uses cunning to force her way in, and William is duly intrigued with this bold slip of a girl. But securing his help may not be enough to save Rose's father. For there is something darker at work in the glen, something more powerful than William's and Rose's magic combined, and only the soul-deep passion that shadows their mutual desire can help their love prevail.

Download or read book Lord of the Mill written by Henry Harvey and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-06-30 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A strange man clanks and clatters in the alleyways at 4am, picking up the relics and trash from the town of Potter's Mill. Among the children, it's said that he's the Lord of the Mill, Potter's Mill, which is an abandoned ruin that squats in the O'Hanley River. He talks to the fireflies and has a snapping turtle for his watchdog. But his kingdom is troubled. A woman, perhaps a witch, is intruding into his domain. The sign on her Model A truck says: The Cake Lady, and she delivers her cakes door-to-door... But the children know that her pastries change people...forever. So far, she's changed half the lawyers in Potter's Mill into snapping turtles. Two boys, Charlie and Bobby, must weigh the danger between confiding in the Lord of the Mill, and being turned into turtles by the witch. Harvey spins a modern day classic. Magic is magic, whether in the minds of children or grownups. This is a scary, funny, charming book for kids from five to ninety-five. Beautifully illustrated.
