The Sun Sword is about to be delivered by Serra Diora to its “rightful” holder, Valedan, last surviving heir of the clan Leonne. Book Crown and Sword

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cameron Moore
  • Publisher : ANU Press
  • Release : 2017-11-09
  • ISBN : 1760461563
  • Pages : 385 pages

Download or read book Crown and Sword written by Cameron Moore and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Australian Defence Force, together with military forces from a number of western democracies, have for some years been seeking out and killing Islamic militants in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan, detaining asylum seekers for periods at sea or running the judicial systems of failed states. It has also been ready to conduct internal security operations at home. The domestic legal authority cited for this is often the poorly understood concept of executive power, which is power that derives from executive and not parliamentary authority. In an age of legality where parliamentary statutes govern action by public officials in the finest detail, it is striking that these extreme exercises of the use of force often rely upon an elusive legal basis. This book seeks to find the limits to the exercise of this extraordinary power.

Book Between the Sword and the Wall

Download or read book Between the Sword and the Wall written by Harvey F. Kline and published by University Alabama Press. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronicles the peace process negotiations between Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos and the Marxist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia In Between the Sword and the Wall: The Santos Peace Negotiations with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, Harvey Kline, a noted expert on contemporary Colombian politics, brings to a close his multivolume chronicle of the incessant violence that has devastated Colombia’s population, politics, and military for decades. This, his newest work on the subject, recounts and analyzes the negotiations between Colombian president Juan Manuel Santos and the Marxist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which ended with a peace agreement in 2016. The FARC insurgency began in 1964, and every Colombian president after 1980 unsuccessfully tried to negotiate a peace agreement with the group. Kline analyzes how the Santos administration was ultimately able to negotiate peace with the FARC. The agreement failed to receive the approval of the Colombian people in an October 2016 plebiscite, but a renegotiated version was later approved by the congress in the same year. Afterward, more than 7,000 rebels turned over their weapons to the UN mission in Colombia. The former combatants were then to be judged by a special court empowered to punish but not imprison those who had violated human rights. Throughout the book, Kline emphasizes the dual nature of the Santos negotiations, first with the FARC and second with the democratic opposition to the agreement led by former president Álvaro Uribe Vélez. Kline provides readers with a well-researched analysis based on a variety of resources, including media articles and primary documents from the government, international organizations, and the FARC. He also conducted extensive interviews with twenty-eight government officials and Colombian experts from all ideological persuasions.

Book The Sword s Other Edge

Download or read book The Sword s Other Edge written by Dan Reiter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first work to build a conceptual framework describing how the pursuit of military effectiveness can present military and political tradeoffs, such as undermining political support for the war, creating new security threats, and that seeking to improve effectiveness in one aspect can reduce effectiveness in other aspects. Here are new ideas about military effectiveness, covering topics such as military robotics, nuclear weapons, insurgency, war finance, public opinion, and others. The study applies these ideas to World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the 1973 October War, as well as ongoing conflicts and public policy debates, such as the War on Terror, drone strikes, ISIS, Russian aggression against Ukraine, US-Chinese-Russian nuclear competitions, and the Philippines insurgency, among others. Both scholarly and policy-oriented readers will gather new insights into the political dimensions of military power, and the complexities of trying to grow military power.

Book The Dove the Fig Leaf and the Sword

Download or read book The Dove the Fig Leaf and the Sword written by Alan Billings and published by SPCK. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does the pacifist movement of the first few centuries so quickly become an organization that supports emperors and finds reasons for fighting? ? What leads the Church to formulate just war principles only to abandon them when in pursuit of heretics and infidels? ? What impact did two world wars have on Christian thinking? ? Why have the churches in more recent years and a more secular age apparently taken a more cautious approach to war? These are the sort of questions this absorbing book sets out to answer. It makes a unique and intriguing contribution to the literature published to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War in August 2014.

Download or read book Soul and Sword written by Hindol Sengupta and published by Penguin Random House India Private Limited. This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political Hinduism was once considered a sort of fringe ideology, shadowy and even misunderstood. Its ideas and narratives seemed, in popular discourse, to lack analytical rigour and were easily dismissed. But history shows that political Hinduism as an intellectual idea was a pioneering theme in India’s nationhood. In fact, it precedes the Indian republic and has been one of the most resilient political theories of India, which survived many bans, boycotts and decades out of power to become, in the twenty-first century, the predominant political force of India. The adherents of political Hinduism are as determined as its detractors—one complains about facing relentless prejudice; the other throws accusations of promoting continuous religious strife. One believes that India cannot be saved without decimating political Hinduism; the other is sanguine that only political Hinduism can save the future of India. Soul and Sword traces the journey of political Hinduism from events that are critical to its self-narration, that is, early Indian resistance to invasions, to intellectual definitions by nineteenth-century littérateurs and more contemporary electoral politics. It tries to understand the context and historical sources used to construct and promote political Hinduism’s world view. From award-winning writer Hindol Sengupta, Soul and Sword is absolutely critical reading to understand India’s present and future.
