H. Die Reihenfolge der einzelnen Blatter rein kunstgeschichtlich und stilkritisch bestimmt wird. Anders ist dies aber wenn ein Bild der Entwicklung in Wenig Zugen entworfen werden soll gar nicht moglich. Am sichersten wird die chronologische Folge und die landschaftliche Eingruppierung auch dieser, nicht von kunstlerischen Per sonlichkeiten ausgehenden, Denkmaler rein kunstkritisch bestimmt. Wer etwa, wie dies Kautzsch gefordert hat, erst nach philologischer Kritik des illustrierten oder illuminierten Textes die Ornamente zeitlich und landschaftlich zu gruppieren weifs, verrat eine sehr niedrige Meinung von der Kunstgeschichte als Wissen schaft. Er wird fast ratlos jenen vielen Fragmenten aus geschmuckten Hand schriften gegenuberstehen, die nichts als den Randschmuck oder das Bild zeigen; auch bei den liturgischen Handschriften mit nur lateinischem Text wird er fast urteilslos sich vorkommen mussen, wahrend er sich unberufener weise als ein kunsthistorisch scharfer Beurteiler fuhlt, wenn er die Malereien einer Handschrift der gleichen Landschaft zuschreibt, wie der Text etwa vermuten lafst.
