Book excerpt: Pakitan at the Knife's Edge is veteran journalist M.B.Naqvi's understanding of contemporary Pakistan and the directions the country could take or ought to. From the sacking of the Chief justice of the Supreme Court, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, by General Pervez Musharraf, to the return of Benazir Bhutto and her assasination on 27 December 2007, the book traces the lawyer's agitation to the general elections in 2008, and also the rise of more vocal civil society. M.B.Naqvi focuses on the lawyer's movement for judicial autonomy and reinstatement of democracy and derives great hope from it, the movement has become a locus for a more braod-based demand for democracy raised by civil society. So Pakistan is poised at knife's edge: whihc way will it go? A human rights activist and fervent supporter of liberal democratic dispensation, Naqvi presents a compelling blueprint for the future of the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synopsis: Bardot's Comet is a literary crime novel set in Australia in a period of intense social and scientific change: 1966-1969. Amid the rise of feminism and sexual liberation, the Vietnam War, the first man on the moon, the global debate on science versus religion, and the Murchison Comet, a father seeks to understand his daughter's brutal murder. Leonardo Bari changed his daughter's name to Prudence after her mother died, a month after her birth in 1924. This simple act haunts him as he questions its impact on her life. Does numerology form an integral part of the cosmic plan for one's life? Can changing a name alter one's destiny? Or is the Murchison Comet, which his daughter re-names "Bardot's Comet," the bringer of doom and death? Is destiny, Bardot's Comet, or Leonardo himself ultimately responsible for Prudence's shocking fate?

Download or read book Complex Rivalry written by Surinder Mohan and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While a substantial body of research explains how the conflict between India and Pakistan originated and developed over time, a systematic and multivariate inquiry cutting across different IR paradigms to understand this rivalry is rare or limited. Surinder Mohan contributes to the understanding of India and Pakistan’s rivalry by presenting a new type of framework, also known as complex rivalry model. This comprehensive model, by not limiting its theoretical tool-kit to any single paradigm, is unique in its approach and better positioned to debate and answer baffling questions that the single-paradigm-based studies address rather inadequately and in isolation. This book, through an examination of fifty-seven militarized disputes between 1947 and 2021, explains the life cycle of India-Pakistan rivalry in four phases: initiation; development; maintenance; and a possible transformation/termination. Mohan delineates five specific conditions that evolved the subcontinental conflict into a complex rivalry: first, its survival in spite of the Bangladesh War and the end of the Cold War; second, its linkage with other rivalries; third, the inclusion of nuclear factor; fourth, the dyadic stability in the militarized disputes and hostility level despite changes in the regime type; and fifth, the dyad’s involvement in a multilayered conflict pattern. To break this deadlock and mitigate their longstanding differences, Mohan proposes that India and Pakistan must reframe their national priorities and political goals so that the new situation or combinations of conditions would assist their peace strategists to downgrade the dyadic hostility and implement risky policies to make headway to a promising transformation.

Download or read book Inevitable Surprises written by Peter Schwartz and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-05-24 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world we live in today is more volatile than ever. The security of free nations is threatened by rogue states, the global economy is in flux, and the rapid advance of technology forces constant reevaluation of our society. With so many powerful forces at work and seemingly unpredictable events occurring, to many the future seems dark, and its possibilities frightening. Peter Schwartz disagrees. A world-renowned visionary in the field of scenario planning, Schwartz’s startling—and accurate— predictions have been employed by government agencies and major corporations for more than twenty-five years. He argues that the future is foreseeable, and that by examining the dynamics at work today we can predict the “inevitable surprises” of tomorrow. Timely and thought-provoking, Inevitable Surprises is a book that no one with an interest in business—or the future of our society—can afford to miss.

Download or read book Line on Fire written by Happymon Jacob and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-12-24 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The India–Pakistan border in Jammu & Kashmir has witnessed repeated ceasefire violations (CFVs) over the past decade. As relations between India and Pakistan have deteriorated, CFVs have increased exponentially. It is imperative to gain a deeper understanding of these violations owing to their potential to not only cause a crisis but also escalate an ongoing one. Line on Fire, part of the Oxford International Relations in South Asia series, postulates that the incorrect diagnosis of the reasons behind CFVs has led to wrong policies being adopted by both India and Pakistan to deal with the recurrent violations. Using fresh empirical data and first-hand accounts, the volume attempts to understand the reason why CFVs continue to take place between India and Pakistan despite consistent efforts to reduce the tension between the two nations. In doing so, it recontextualizes and enriches the prevailing arguments in contemporary literature on escalating dynamics and unenduring ceasefire agreements between the two South Asian nuclear rivals.
