Book excerpt: 'I don't know if I was stolen or sold, but the thought of having a family out there has caused me much pain over the years.' KARTYA WUNDERLE 'It's a pain known only to an adopted child. No matter how much you give or how happy they seem, there's always that question in their hearts - why was I given away?' NOLA WUNDERLE This is the story of 18-year-old Kartya Wunderle, one of 64 babies flown out of Taiwan in the early 80s. Babies stolen from their mothers or sold by their families. Her loving Australian parents were overjoyed to have a fourth child, but they were not to know that their official overseas adoption agency was, in fact, a cover for a baby-stealing racket, and that Kartya had been stolen from her mother. Despite the love and affection she found with the Wunderle family, Kartya lived with the pain and guilt of thinking she had been given up for dead because her natural parent didn't want her; her torment and emptiness affected the whole family. At 15, Kartya began to use heroin in an attempt to take away the pain inside, and her distraught parents watched her fade away before their eyes, powerless to stop the slide. Finally, out of desperation and unconditional love for her daughter, Nola Wunderle resolved to find Kartya's birth mother, and so began an amazing search for one woman in a country of 22 million. The result was nothing short of miraculous, and made Kartya a national hero in her homeland. KARTYA'S STORY is a moving testament to the power of love and the strength of the human spirit, one that will humble and inspire all who read it.

Our fourth child was soon to arrive … This is the story of 18-year-old Kartya Wunderle, one of 64 babies flown out of Taiwan in the early 80s. An amazing search for one woman in a country of 22 million began. The result was nothing short of miraculous, and made Kartya a national hero in her homeland. Book The Race Card

  • Author : Tali Mendelberg
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press

Download or read book The Race Card written by Tali Mendelberg and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did George Bush's use of the Willie Horton story during the1988 presidential campaign communicate most effectively when no one noticed its racial meaning? Do politicians routinely evoke racial stereotypes, fears, and resentments without voters' awareness? This controversial, rigorously researched book argues that they do. Tali Mendelberg examines how and when politicians play the race card and then manage to plausibly deny doing so. In the age of equality, politicians cannot prime race with impunity due to a norm of racial equality that prohibits racist speech. Yet incentives to appeal to white voters remain strong. As a result, politicians often resort to more subtle uses of race to win elections. Mendelberg documents the development of this implicit communication across time and measures its impact on society. Drawing on a wide variety of research--including simulated television news experiments, national surveys, a comprehensive content analysis of campaign coverage, and historical inquiry--she analyzes the causes, dynamics, and consequences of racially loaded political communication. She also identifies similarities and differences among communication about race, gender, and sexual orientation in the United States and between communication about race in the United States and ethnicity in Europe, thereby contributing to a more general theory of politics. Mendelberg's conclusion is that politicians--including many current state governors--continue to play the race card, using terms like "welfare" and "crime" to manipulate white voters' sentiments without overtly violating egalitarian norms. But she offers some good news: implicitly racial messages lose their appeal, even among their target audience, when their content is exposed.

Book Uncivil Society

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen Kotkin
  • Publisher : Modern Library
  • Release : 2010-10-12
  • ISBN : 0812966791
  • Pages : 257 pages

Download or read book Uncivil Society written by Stephen Kotkin and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years ago, the Berlin Wall fell. In one of modern history’s most miraculous occurrences, communism imploded–and not with a bang, but with a whimper. Now two of the foremost scholars of East European and Soviet affairs, Stephen Kotkin and Jan T. Gross, drawing upon two decades of reflection, revisit this crash. In a crisp, concise, unsentimental narrative, they employ three case studies–East Germany, Romania, and Poland–to illuminate what led Communist regimes to surrender, or to be swept away in political bank runs. This is less a story of dissidents, so-called civil society, than of the bankruptcy of a ruling class–communism’s establishment, or “uncivil society.” The Communists borrowed from the West like drunken sailors to buy mass consumer goods, then were unable to pay back the hard-currency debts and so borrowed even more. In Eastern Europe, communism came to resemble a Ponzi scheme, one whose implosion carries enduring lessons. From East Germany’s pseudotechnocracy to Romania’s megalomaniacal dystopia, from Communist Poland’s cult of Mary to the Kremlin’s surprise restraint, Kotkin and Gross pull back the curtain on the fraud and decadence that cashiered the would-be alternative to the market and democracy, an outcome that opened up to a deeper global integration that has proved destabilizing.

Book excerpt: In summarizing current insights and controversies over concussions in athletics, this book makes the vital point that symptom resolution does not necessarily mean injury resolution. Research shows that dysfunctional pathways continue for extended periods even after a minor concussion. Until the consequences of short-term perturbations and long-term residual brain dysfunctions are better understood, concussions must be treated with respect and given a higher priority for continued research activity.
