Book British Indian Picture Postcards in Bengaluru

Download or read book British Indian Picture Postcards in Bengaluru written by Emily Stevenson and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining ethnographic and archival research, this book examines the lives of colonial-period postcards and reveals how they become objects of contemporary historical imagination in India. Picture postcards were circulated around the world in their billions in the early twentieth century and remained, until the advent of social media, unmatched as the primary means of sharing images alongside personal messages. This book, based on original research in Bengaluru, shows that their lives stretch from their initial production and consumption in the early 1900s into the present where they act as visual and material mediators in postcolonial productions of history, locality, and heritage against a backdrop of intense urban change. The book will be of interest to photographic historians, visual anthropologists, and art historians.

Book Devotional Sovereignty

  • Author : Caleb Simmons
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA
  • Release : 2020-01-03

Download or read book Devotional Sovereignty written by Caleb Simmons and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Devotional Sovereignty: Kingship and Religion in India investigates the shifting conceptualization of sovereignty in the South Indian kingdom of Mysore during the reigns of Tipu Sultan (r. 1782-1799) and Krishnaraja Wodeyar III (r. 1799-1868). Tipu Sultan was a Muslim king famous for resisting British dominance until his death; Krishnaraja III was a Hindu king who succumbed to British political and administrative control. Despite their differences, the courts of both kings dealt with the changing political landscape by turning to the religious and mythical past to construct a royal identity for their kings. Caleb Simmons explores the ways in which these two kings and their courts modified and adapted pre-modern Indian notions of sovereignty and kingship in reaction to British intervention. The religious past provided an idiom through which the Mysore courts could articulate their rulers' claims to kingship in the region, attributing their rule to divine election and employing religious vocabulary in a variety of courtly genres and media. Through critical inquiry into the transitional early colonial period, this study sheds new light on pre-modern and modern India, with implications for our understanding of contemporary politics. It offers a revisionist history of the accepted narrative in which Tipu Sultan is viewed as a radical Muslim reformer and Krishnaraja III as a powerless British puppet. Simmons paints a picture of both rulers in which they work within and from the same understanding of kingship, utilizing devotion to Hindu gods, goddesses, and gurus to perform the duties of the king.

Book Sectarianism in Medieval India

Download or read book Sectarianism in Medieval India written by Naseem A. Banerji and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research for this book was motivated by speculations about the religious movements that may have influenced the plans and arrangements of temples built by the Hoysaḷas of Karnataka in the period between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. It investigates the causes for the accelerated pace of these constructions; enquires about what served as catalysts for the incorporation of multiple shrines within structures; examines the factors that gave momentum to the sanctification of a variety of deities within them; and studies the characteristics of their style as it was manifested in the temples they commissioned. Thought the finest of these are in the Imperial Hoysaḷa Style (in either the Haḷebīḍ or Koravañgala types), all of the architectural output does not necessarily fall into these categories, some displaying a plurality of characteristics from earlier regional idioms. However, the differences between the two are revealing as they serve to highlight the really ground breaking innovations introduced by the Hoysaḷas.
