Book Farmers preferences for climate smart agriculture

Download or read book Farmers preferences for climate smart agriculture written by Taneja, Garima and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2014-04-02 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was undertaken to assess farmers’ preferences and willingness to pay (WTP) for various climate-smart interventions in the Indo-Gangetic Plain. The research outputs will be helpful in integrating farmers’ choices with government programs in the selected regions. The Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) was selected because it is highly vulnerable to climate change, which may adversely affect the sustainability of the rice-wheat production system and the food security of the region. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) can mitigate the negative impacts of climate change and improve the efficiency of the rice-wheat-based production system. CSA requires a complete package of practices to achieve the desired objectives, but adoption is largely dependent on farmers’ preferences and their capacity and WTP. To assess farmers’ choices and their WTP for the potential climate-smart technologies and other interventions, we used scoring and bidding protocols implemented through focus group meetings in two distinct regions of Eastern and Western IGP. We find that laser land leveling (LLL), crop insurance, and weather advisory services were the preferred interventions in Eastern IGP. Farmers preferred LLL, direct seeding, zero tillage, irrigation scheduling, and crop insurance in Western IGP. Through the bidding approach, farmers implicitly express their WTP for new technologies that could transform current agricultural practices into relatively low-carbon and more productive farming methods. But actual large-scale adoption of the preferred climate-smart technologies and other interventions would require access to funding as well as capacity building among technology promoters and users.

Book Economics of energy use in crop production under irrigated situations of Raichur district Karnataka

Download or read book Economics of energy use in crop production under irrigated situations of Raichur district Karnataka written by Prasanna Kumar P. S and published by Prem Jose. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture is the most important sector in the Indian economy and it is basically an energy conversion industry. At present, the use of renewable energy sources such as human labour and animal power is decreasing and the use of mechanical energy (non-renewable in nature) is increasing especially in intensive agriculture leading to adverse effect on farm employment and income distribution. Therefore, a study was carried out to assess economics of energy use in crop production under irrigated situations of Raichur district of Karnataka during the year 2009-10. It was found that the total energy used by small farmers was found to be significantly higher than that of medium and large famers in paddy and cotton cultivation. The total energy used for cotton cultivation was relatively higher (3.23%) than that of paddy cultivation. The output input energy ratio was significantly higher in case of paddy (8.75) than that of cotton (1.78) cultivation. Similar pattern was noticed both in the case of energy productivy and net energy return. Further, it was observed that the total cost of input energy in the case of paddy (Rs. 16,904.58/MJ) cultivation was relatively lower (1.23%) than that of cotton (Rs. 17,114.74/acre) cultivation. However, the net energy returns was considerably higher in case of paddy (Rs. 28,473.49/acre) than that of cotton (Rs. 9,773.83/acre) cultivation. It was found that the bullock energy deman (3,763.07 lakh MJ) was significantly higher (92.58%) than that of total bullock energy supply (279.24 lakh MJ) in Raichur district. Therefore, farmers may be encouraged to maintain and use bullock power in crop production which is cost effective so as to meet the deficit bullock energy supply in Raichur district and the existing transfer of technology programmes needed to be reoriented for use of energy issues in crop production.

Book Agroecosystems Facing Global Climate Change The Search for Sustainability

Download or read book Agroecosystems Facing Global Climate Change The Search for Sustainability written by José M. Mirás-Avalos and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global change is posing new threats to agroecosystems. First, climate modifications in the spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall increase the risks of severe droughts during the growing season of most crops. Second, conventional agriculture has led to the extension of mono-crop fields that decreased biodiversity in agroecosystems; it is possible that these fields will lack resilience when faced with changing climate. In addition, a new conscience has arisen and consumers tend to look for healthy products that, sometimes, do not match the objectives of conventional agriculture. In this context, sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices that can cope with the new global change scenario are needed. This eBook compiles state-of-the-art research on the agroecosystems response to global change and on how to manage these new scenarios. Despite the broad scope of the topic, this Research Topic covers a wide range of subjects, including biodiversity, crop performance, novel agricultural practices and soil properties.
