Book excerpt: I thought being Karma would be a cinch. I thought wrong. Turns out someone knows what I did to my jerk ex and his sleazy girlfriend. Or at least they left me a note telling me they knew, not that they bothered to sign it. When my ex is reported missing and cops from my old town start sniffing around I know I’m in trouble. What’s worse? I find a body outside my house. The town philanderer. Now everyone’s giving me the side eye, including the man I had a crush on all those years ago, and rumors are flying, which jeopardizes my new job. To top it all off I still don’t know how to use my powers. I thought life was supposed to get easier as you got older?

Book Shifting Shape Shaping Text

Download or read book Shifting Shape Shaping Text written by Steven Heine and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1999-12-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the fox koan, the second case in the Wu-men kuan koan collection, Zen master Pai-chang encounters a fox who claims to be a former abbot punished through endless reincarnations for denying the efficacy of karmic causality. In the end he is liberated by Pai-chang's turning word, which asserts the inexorability of cause-and-effect. Most traditional interpretations of the koan focus on the philosophical issue of causality in relation to earlier Buddhist doctrines, such as dependent origination and emptiness. Dogen, the founder of the Japanese Soto school, devoted two fascicles of the Shobogenzo exclusively to the fox koan. One fascicle supports a paradoxical view of causality and non-causality, the two being "two sides of the same coin"; the second strongly attacks this interpretation and defends a literal reading that asserts causality and denies non-causality. Dogen's apparent change of heart on this topic has inspired scholars of the recent Critical Buddhist methodology to evaluate the merits and weaknesses in Zen's attitude toward ethical issues and social affairs. Shifting Shape, Shaping Text examines the fox koan in relation to philosophical and institutional issues facing the Ch'an/Zen tradition in both Sung China and medieval and contemporary Japan. Steven Heine integrates his own philological analysis of the koan, textual analysis of koan collections and related literary genres in T'ang and Sung China, folklore studies, recent discourse theory, Dogen studies, and research on monastic codes and institutional history to craft an original and compelling work. More specifically, he illuminates a fascinating dimension of the entire Ch'an/Zen tradition as he carefully lays out the philosophical issues in the koan concerning causality/karma and enlightenment, the ethical issues contained therein, the bearing that certain interpretations of causality had on the creation of monastic codes and institutional security in China, the relation between Zen and folk religion as revealed by the koan, and the issue of possible antinomianism in Zen, especially as grappled with by later thinkers such as Dogen and contemporary representatives of Critical Buddhism. Finally he applies theories of "high" and "low" religion and contemporary discourse and in the process rethinks the theories and their applicability across cultures. Far-reaching yet rigorous, Shifting Shape, Shaping Text will not only attract the interest of Ch'an/Zen specialists, but also those studying folklore, popular religion, and issues concerning the nature of discourse and the relation between "high" and "low" religions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shifting cultivation supports around 200 million people in the Asia-Pacific region alone. It is often regarded as a primitive and inefficient form of agriculture that destroys forests, causes soil erosion and robs lowland areas of water. These misconceptions and their policy implications need to be challenged. Swidden farming could support carbon sequestration and conservation of land, biodiversity and cultural heritage. This comprehensive analysis of past and present policy highlights successes and failures and emphasizes the importance of getting it right for the future. This book is enhanced with supplementary resources. The addendum chapters can be found at: www.cabi.org/openresources/91797

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES, USA TODAY, and PUBLISHERS WEEKLY BESTSELLER “Full of valuable insights to guide you.”—WILL SMITH “Thoughtful and life-affirming . . . a must-read.”—TONY ROBBINS “This book will put you back in charge of your own life.”—TOM BRADY A new perspective on the overused and misunderstood concept of “karma” that offers the key to happiness and enlightenment, from the world-renowned spiritual master Sadhguru. What is karma? Most people understand karma as a balance sheet of good and bad deeds, virtues and sins. The mechanism that decrees that we cannot evade the consequences of our own actions. In reality, karma has nothing to do with reward and punishment. Karma simply means action: your action, your responsibility. It isn’t some external system of crime and punishment, but an internal cycle generated by you. Accumulation of karma is determined only by your intention and the way you respond to what is happening to you. Over time, it’s possible to become ensnared by your own unconscious patterns of behavior. In Karma, Sadhguru seeks to put you back in the driver’s seat, turning you from a terror-struck passenger to a confident driver navigating the course of your own destiny. By living consciously and fully inhabiting each moment, you can free yourself from the cycle. Karma is an exploration and a manual, restoring our understanding of karma to its original potential for freedom and empowerment instead of a source of entanglement. Through Sadhguru’s teachings, you will learn how to live intelligently and joyfully in a challenging world.

Book The Centrality of Ethics in Buddhism

Download or read book The Centrality of Ethics in Buddhism written by Hari Shankar Prasad and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, through extensive textual study, explores the Buddha's and Buddhism's uncompromising and unflinching emphasis on the centrality of ethics as against any pernicious dogmas and metaphysical beliefs, and their attempts to causally relate moral perfection to soteriological or eschatological goal. What is most admirable about Buddhism is that it integrates the vertical development of human consciousness, for which the other is the necessary condition, with the gradual development of morality. It was this emphasis which separated Siddhartha, before he attained the Awakened Wisdom (bodhi), from his teachers - Alara Kalama and Uddaka Ramaputta - and it is for this reason that the Buddha calls himself and his Dhamma Patisotagami, i.e. going against the currents of the prevailing dogmas and pernicious beliefs. In brief, Buddhism is about overcoming of suffering, the greatest evil, through ethicization of human consciousness and conduct, which also takes care of the ethicization of the society and the universe. Besides, some of the essays of this book explore many other themes like Buddhist epistemology, nature of self, time, and intercultural.

  • ISBN : 1954021135
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Yoga written by Deepak Kashyap and published by Global Collective Publishers. This book was released on 2021-08-23 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the forgotten art and science of healing: retrieved and reaped in easy steps. Equally, it is an attempt at interpreting the ancient Upanishadic wisdom through the author’s insight: showing the essential oneness of spirituality with the mind-body matrix. Layers of wisdom unravel as the author unfolds the science of Yoga: dispelling myths while reinforcing the Truth. Touching upon subjects of contemporary interest - Cosmic Energy, Reiki, Karma, Kundalini, Yoga, Health etc. - the book has a universal appeal. Of particular interest to the scientifically-inclined is the author’s juxtaposing of scriptural wisdom of the East with the West’s path-breaking findings in Quantum Physics, Probabilistic nature of the Universe, Psychoneuroimmunology and Parapsychology. That the author throws light on these esoteric matters through the prism of his spiritual experiences, lends the whole narrative a kind of authenticity not common in books of this genre. The highlight of the book is its ability to touch the yoga-inclined masses in their daily life and facilitate their ‘three-dimensional’ healing through easy-to-make forays in diet control, asana-pranayama, alternative therapy, meditation and karmic remedies.
