Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constrained by traditions restricting their movements and speech, the Maithil women of Nepal and India have long explored individual and collective life experiences by sharing stories with one another. Sometimes fantastical, sometimes including a kind of magical realism, these tales allow women to build community through a deeply personal and always evolving storytelling form. In Maithil Women’s Tales, Coralynn V. Davis examines how these storytellers weave together their own life experiences--the hardships and the pleasures--with age-old themes. In so doing, Davis demonstrates, they harness folk traditions to grapple personally as well as collectively with social values, behavioral mores, relationships, and cosmological questions. Each chapter includes stories and excerpts that reveal Maithil women’s gift for rich language, layered plots, and stunning allegory. In addition, Davis provides ethnographic and personal information that reveal the complexity of women’s own lives, and includes works painted by Maithil storytellers to illustrate their tales. The result is a fascinating study of being and becoming that will resonate for readers in women’s and Hindu studies, folklore, and anthropology.

Book excerpt: Since the beginning of human civilization, there has been a search to make sense of life and discover deeper truths about our existence. A question that has captivated spiritual seekers, philosophers, and ordinary people trying to understand life's ups and downs Is: What invisible forces or universal laws might influence the unfolding of events, the patterns In our lives, the good fortune we receive or harsh knocks that come our way? Over millennia, the concept of karma has emerged in Indian, Buddhist and East Asian schools of philosophy as a law of moral causation that can help provide answers. The word karma has Its roots in ancient Sanskrit and Pali languages. It translates as "action" or "deed", but more broadly signifies the entire cycle of causation that governs existence. Simply put, karma links intentional actions to future results. It Is a natural law of cause and effect, the repercussions of thoughts, words and actions that sent out ripples into the Interconnected cosmic fabric of creation. Karma draws connections between actions in the past, present realities, and possibilities for the future. So this vast concept provides a framework for making sense of life's apparent disparities and inequalities. Why do some people face more misfortune than fortune? What leads to differences In talents, character, circumstances people are born into, even the length of their lives?

Download or read book Karma written by Johannes Bronkhorst and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karma has become a household word in the modern world, where it is associated with the belief in rebirth determined by one’s deeds in earlier lives. This belief was and is widespread in the Indian subcontinent as is the word “karma” itself. In lucid and accessible prose, this book presents karma in its historical, cultural, and religious context. Initially, karma manifested itself in a number of religious movements—most notably Jainism and Buddhism—and was subsequently absorbed into Brahmanism in spite of opposition until the end of the first millennium C.E. Philosophers of all three traditions were confronted with the challenge of explaining by what process rebirth and karmic retribution take place. Some took the drastic step of accepting the participation of a supreme god who acted as a cosmic accountant, others of opting for radical idealism. The doctrine of karma was confronted with alternative explanations of human destiny, among them the belief in the transfer of merit. It also had to accommodate itself to devotional movements that exerted a major influence on Indian religions. The book concludes with some general reflections on the significance of rebirth and karmic retribution, drawing attention to similarities between early Christian and Indian ascetical practices and philosophical notions that in India draw their inspiration from the doctrine of karma.

Book Karma and Rebirth in Classical Indian Traditions

Download or read book Karma and Rebirth in Classical Indian Traditions written by Wendy Doniger O'Flaherty and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-07-26 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karma is perhaps the most famous concept in Indian philosophy, but this is the first comprehensive study of its various meanings and philosophical implications. Karma and Rebirth in Classical Indian Traditions offers a harmony of approach and an underlying set of methodological assumptions: a corpus of definitions of karma, a dialectic between abstract theory and historical explanation, and an awareness of logical oppositions in theories of karma. No “solution” to the paradox of karma is offered, but the volume as a whole presents a consistent and encompassing approach to the many different, often conflicting, Indian statements of the problem. Broad in scope and richly detailed, this book demonstrates the impossibility of speaking of “the theory of karma” and supplies the basis for further study. Exploring methodological issues arising in the study of a non-Western system of soteriology and rebirth, the contributors question the interaction of medical and philosophical models of the human body, the incorporation of philosophical theories into practical religions with which they are logically incompatible, and the problem of historical reconstruction of a complex theory of human life. Book KARMA Its Applicability And Relevance In Day To Day Life

Download or read book KARMA Its Applicability And Relevance In Day To Day Life written by LALJEE VERMA and published by One Point Six Technologies Pvt Ltd. This book was released on with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every act is part of the karmic process; bound to have its effect. Karma is considered the all-pervading, universal law of existence. It perhaps finds its greatest relevance in the sentient minds of humans. The karma doctrine cannot be viewed from a religious standpoint; it is relevant to all, regardless of sect, community or beliefs. No one can claim to live life without performing an action – from simple life sustaining activities to highly complex scientific or spiritual enquiry. What we do dictates what we get in this life...and the next…and the next…till we are freed of our karmic burden. Genetic and transmigrating influences are, even today, subjects of research and discussion. The quantum and quality a living being brings from previous karma, if any, is a matter of intense debate, as is the effect that actions may imprint on our conscience. Deliberation on contentious issues is basic to human nature and has been part of human discourse from the dawn of civilisation. The attempt to define karma has consumed immense mental resource over the millennia, along with the search to understand the essential meaning of life. In the vast literature which exists on the subject, pundits from almost every society and religious group in the world, have attempted to explain the significance and validity of karma, or its lack. Though karma is basic to life, its purport remains veiled; deeply relevant yet poorly understood. Self awareness is a feeling of being in the universe; a substance dot in a life-process on the platter of existence, in the paradigm of time and space

Book Karma is the best

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 44 pages

Download or read book Karma is the best written by Abdul Waheed and published by Abdul Waheed . This book was released on with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is karma the best than religion? This is a question which has been said to be the best somewhere or the other. Even in astrology, the first heading that comes is that fate is made and ruined by karma. This proves that karma is the best. Because even in Islam, if your karma towards humans is not good, then even Allah does not forgive it until humans forgive. Similarly, karma is the main thing in Buddhism because there is no concept of God in it. Because now the time has changed, people have started believing more in karma and less in religion or astrology. However, astrology has remained confined to Hinduism, no other religion believes in it because it considers it a hypocrisy and imaginary. Today, all the advanced countries are based on karma only, they have progressed through karma only, not through religion. Today science believes only in karma because there is no concept of religion in it. Religion is an effort to keep a person satisfied and content, but man believes more in karma because nothing happens without doing karma. Man also believes that God does not help without doing karma. This book on this subject of karma is presented to you. Please read it. By the way, if you have more information, please let me know, I will try to share your information. Thank you.

At least discover the following: 1. Reincarnation is true. 2. The Law of Karma applies to everyone. 3. There is a Purpose for Life. 4. Your Soul cannot be harmed. 5. The life you are living is the life you designed. 6. There really are Hells and Heavens. 7. Prophecies are true, but misunderstood regarding December 21, 2012. 8. And the end is coming.... but it's the end of the Iron Age of Man, and not everyone will die or leave the Earth in the geophysical events coming our way. What if the Bible prophecies were true, but a wee bit distorted? What if the Mayan prophecies, the Hopi prophecies, the Bible prophecies, and those of others throughout history were speaking of the same series of events? And what if what's coming happened before? Do you know the "reason" the world has become so negative? The reason is that we are in the latter stages of the Iron Age of Man.... And this is about to end in about 330 days. On December 21, 2012, is when the new Golden Age of Man begins. But what does this mean? For some, it's actually quite positive. If you have the proper "resonance", no problem, according to the Mayan elder, Don Oxiaj. If not, then you probably need to read this book. Docjp

Book Finding Meaning in Life at Midlife and Beyond

Download or read book Finding Meaning in Life at Midlife and Beyond written by David Guttmann and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2008-09-30 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having been mentored by Viktor E. Frankl, the founder of logotherapy, Emeritus Professor David Guttmann authored this book so general readers may understand this approach to finding meaning in life at the point when most of us begin deeply wondering over that question, at midlife and beyond. Especially in this day and age of multiple demands on our time and seemingly non-stop obligations, we too often find that it is only when the dust settles, after a work day or work week, or even after retirement, when we begin to wonder: What is the meaning of life? The purpose? This book is a new millennium venture into those questions and their answers using logotherapy, written by a sage understudy who recalls Frankl, with his logotherapy, as the epitome of his theory even at 80 years old, wise and witty, exuding an energy, enthusiasm and youthful spirit that belied his years by decades. Aging does not diminish our power, our energy, and our quest for life, but reshapes it with new understandings, goals, and needs. But, says Guttmann, we live in a technical and machine-based world now, in which there is a danger of losing our souls. Here, readers find a new, creative perspective on aging and a fresh spiritual outlook. This book will be of interest not only to general readers, especially those at midlife and beyond, but also to their families, friends, and students or professionals in the helping professions. This unique work provides knowledge to find meaning in life derived from the fields of philosophy, psychology, religion and gerontology, with case illustrations and vignettes to give readers both intellectual pleasure and practical guidance.
