  • Author : Kin Platt
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster

  • ISBN : 1440540489
  • Pages : 300 pages

Download or read book The Pushbutton Butterfly written by Kin Platt and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-02-15 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Max Roper is one of the new-fangled breed who includes murder in his arsenal of security activities. In The Pushbutton Butterfly, he has to track a missing girl through a myriad of fascinating, violent, and potentially evil people, including an idealistic student rebel at Berkeley; the most fashionable of gurus; young coeds who augment their income by pushing heroin; a motorcycle gang leader who is flying high all the time; and a staid, liberal pillar of the Establishment who secretly collects pornographic pictures. Roper is a compelling man who carries his own standards of behavior into every society he encounters. He fits best with the local police who are his friends, with an aspiring Mr. America, whom he can throw with karate, indeed with all types of evildoers and guardians against evildoers. He’s an adaptable fellow, though, and manages to get on well—when he has to—with millionaires and murderers of all classes. The Pushbutton Butterfly begins when Max Roper’s boss, head of an organization called EPT, sends him out to investigate the report of a missing girl, a security project. EPT, an offshoot of a wartime operation, occasionally does top, top secret jobs for the CIA and other legal espionage groups. In this case, the girl’s father is manufacturing some highly important electronic gadgets, and there’s some danger that pressure could be exerted o him through his daughter to release secret formulas. The father, who is understandably inimical to Roper’s presence in the case, gives grudging cooperation. The girl is a student at Berkeley, and there Max goes to learn what he can from her friends. He finds one of them almost immediately, an attractive girl whose charms are not improved the condition in which Max finds her, which is very dead. From this opening, there is no letdown to the pace and excitement of The Pushbutton Butterfly, Max Roper’s first case, a provocative introduction.

Book Zombie Seed and the Butterfly Blues

Download or read book Zombie Seed and the Butterfly Blues written by R.P. Clair and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Delta Quinn teams with investigative reporter Caleb Barthes to unravel the mystery of the zombie seed, the genetically-modified follow-up to the “terminator seed.” This fact-based fiction is an academic novel that relies on fast-paced action as well as theoretical insights. Using the cultural icon of the zombie to address work alienation and contemporary apathy is perfect for the purposes of having the reader examine corporate greed in a global world. The cast of characters brings this global aspect to life. In the backdrop of the novel, a history of the zombie unfolds—a history of the violence that Haiti and African diaspora have suffered. Yet, it is Delta’s research into narratives of partner abuse that lead her to grapple with her own tragic past and take brave steps toward ending the abuse of others. This social justice book is based on award-winning research in rhetorical ethnography and is being assigned for courses in rhetoric, ethnography, narrative, organizational communication, and diversity, but would fit with others (e.g., ethics, interpersonal, public relations, journalism, sociology, philosophy) where examining the individual’s role in the life-world is not only promoted but expected. If the novel doesn’t do it, then the facts found at the end of the book should “wake up” any remaining zombies. Robin Patric Clair is a Full Professor, Diversity Fellow and a Fellow to the Center of Creative Endeavors at Purdue University. She has won research awards in rhetoric, narrative, ethnography and organizational communication, including two ‘Outstanding Book of the Year’ awards, two ‘Best Research Article of the Year’ awards, the ‘Golden Anniversary Award’ and multiple ‘Top Paper’ Awards for her research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current Western interest in Buddhism and other Eastern religions is--among other reasons--both the result of and the stimulation for an entire library of books purporting to bring the Wisdom of the East to an audience for whom the wisdom of the West has failed. This book is not an example of that genre. It is an attempt to interpret Buddhism in the light of some current theories about religion. As a work of scholarship, rather than a homiletic tract or an apologetic treatise, its aim is to understand Buddhism as one historical variant of the generic human attempt to find meaning and hope in a sacred order that transcends the mundane order of existence; its aime is not to encourage or discourage either a devotional or a soteriological interest in Buddhism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Journey Beyond A Non Dual Approach

Download or read book Journey Beyond A Non Dual Approach written by Acharya Dr. Kuntimaddi Sadananda and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2019-09-10 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone is searching for everlasting happiness. Yet, none can find it by pursuit; at the same time, none can stop the pursuit. This seems to be the tragedy of human life—nay, the life of every being. Every pursuit is limited space-wise, time-wise and object-wise. Any pursuit that is limited cannot give everlasting happiness. Some promise eternal happiness after death if one follows their path. Yet, no one has returned to claim that they achieved it by following that path. One sage declares that ‘truth is a pathless land’. Vedanta ascertains that the truth is beyond the space-time-object-wise limitations, and you are that truth–tat tvam asi. The journey beyond space and time limitations is the central theme of the discussions in this text.

Book Chaoyi Fanhuan Qigong Healing

Download or read book Chaoyi Fanhuan Qigong Healing written by Yap Master Soon Yeong and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaoyi Fanhuan Qigong Techniques for Healing Self, Healing Others Renowned Qigong healer Master Yap Soon Yeong and psychology professor and Qigong trainer Chok C. Hiew team up to release the quintessential guide on the ancient art of Qigong Chaoyi Fanhuan Qigong Healing: Healing Self, Healing Others (published by iUniverse). In Chaoyi Fanhuan Qigong Healing, Yap and Hiew detail the meditative movements and practices that allow individuals to begin to heal on a physiological and psychological level. Readers are guided in how to rid the blocked negative energies that is often the root cause of pain, trauma, disease, aging and various chronic issues. Qigong, a centuries-old Chinese system of physical and mental training, has seen a rise in popularity as other Eastern codifications, such as yoga and martial arts, continue to spread in Western societies. Yap and Hiew understand the attractiveness of alternative health care approaches. Chaoyi Fanhuan Qigong (CFQ) Healing stems from the esoteric Qigong tradition in which one actualizes one's inherent self-healing mechanism to free the mind and body from pain and disease without any external input, the authors write. It is a therapeutic approach whose effectiveness in sustaining and extending life and overcoming most known diseases and genetic disorders has been demonstrated. Conventional medicine explains and treats diseases from a physical basis. Eastern holistic medicine goes deeper. Master Yap Soon Yeong & Chok C. Hiew, Ph.D. In Qigong energy medicine, the most fundamental principle is that life is the consequence of the presence of a harmonious mind flowing smoothly in the body. Problems arise when mind is separated from the body, a state that robs precious life energy from the body blocking the inherent self-healing mechanism responsible for homeostasis and healthy physiological functioning. Chaoyi Fanhuan Qigong (CFQ) is the primeval life science of re-connecting or keeping mind in the body to become more alive and to live a long and healthy life. The book's authors, the Founders of CFQ, introduce state-of-the-art healing methods based on authentic internal or energy exercises and meditation techniques. They are original easy-to-learn healing techniques to train on how to remove the common antecedent of disease the stale energy forces or blockages to restore life and for self-repair. Psychological and social trauma, chronic pain, disability are rapidly eliminated. CFQ training harmonizes mind, body and spirit holistically instilling a state of deep relaxation and peace as a form of reality. The ultimate purpose is to deepen healing ability for self-care and for healing others.

Book The Children of the Immortal

Download or read book The Children of the Immortal written by Keshav Prasad Varma and published by Notion Press. This book was released on with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Who is a Hindu?” This question mystifies both Hindus and non-Hindus around the world. Many Hindus, having lived in cosmopolitan cities across the globe, have not been brought up in a traditional Hindu society and are often at a loss to comprehend and describe their own identity. Their claim to being Hindu rests solely on their birth in a Hindu household. Western society also finds that Hinduism, with its countless gods, rituals and beliefs, does not fit its concept of an organised religion. In popular view, Hinduism may just be ‘a way of life’ and consequently the Hindu identity is perceived to be vague and non-uniform. Which of their many ancient books do the Hindus follow? How do they choose which gods to worship? What does karma actually mean? These questions are natural. The Hindu identity is complex, and bears the social, philosophical and religious influences of a long past. However, it continues to be well-defined. This book explains how it is so, and shows how the Hindu identity remains relevant in contemporary times and the global context. The varied elements that have shaped the Hindu identity are explored in the book. It demystifies ancient Hindu scriptures such as the Vedas and the Manusmriti, and provides engaging summaries of the Mahabharata and the Ramayana. It tracks the influence of philosophies such as Vedanta, Tantra and Yoga, as well as the effect of exposure to Western thought. It also discusses contemporary issues such as the status of women, religious pluralism and the caste system today. The anecdotal style of narration makes subtle and complex topics easily comprehensible to all ages. Anyone who seeks an explanation of the Hindu identity, regardless of belief or age, will enjoy reading this book and will benefit from its contents.
