Book Karl Marx and the World Socialist Panorama

Download or read book Karl Marx and the World Socialist Panorama written by Louis Patsouras and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2022-01-26 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work on socialism and its near variants is a comprehensive study of its history from the Old Stone Age to the present, employing the disciplines of history, economics, anthropology, sociology, and psychology. This work features mainly the thought of Karl Marx and Fredrick Engels, but it does not neglect other socialists and anarchists, including Plato, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon, Michael Bakunen, Peter Kropotkin, V.I. Lenin, Thorstein Veblem, Jean-Paul Sartre, and many others. Through the work, Patsouras examines prominent socialist thinkers within the world’s great religions, placing emphasis on Jesus of Nazareth, who expressed the wishes of the oppressed poor to rid themselves of their rulers and usher in a society of equality and prosperity The work sketches the class struggles of the peasants in Europe in the late middle Ages and Early Modern Times, as well as the great Taiping Rebellion in China. Patsouras examines and compares socialism in the U.S., Western Europe, Russia, and China. Attention is also paid to Russia, the former Soviet Union, and China and their socialist and near-socialist systems inspired by Marx, as well as the changing composition of the working classes throughout the world-and their efforts to survive and prosper in a capitalist hegemony.

Book Marx and the Third World

Book excerpt: "Karl Marx wrote a great deal about the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America, but commentators upon his work have subsequently disagreed--sometimes violently--about the implications of his observations. In this book, the author strives to disentangle the threads of Marx's narrative and analysis and to demonstrate how, property understood, they form a coherent pattern and one still capable of application to the world about us. An outstanding merit of the book is that although it makes a signal and distinguished contribution to Marxism, it is at the same time one of the best and clearest introductions to Marxism that one could hope to find"--Provided by publisher.

Book The St Louis Commune Of 1877

Download or read book The St Louis Commune Of 1877 written by Mark Kruger and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-10 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the Civil War, large corporations emerged in the United States and became intent on maximizing their power and profits at all costs. Political corruption permeated American society as those corporate entities grew and spread across the country, leaving bribery and exploitation in their wake. This alliance between corporate America and the political class came to a screeching halt during the Great Railroad Strike of 1877, when the U.S. workers in the railroad, mining, canal, and manufacturing industries called a general strike against monopoly capitalism and brought the country to an economic standstill. In The St. Louis Commune of 1877 Mark Kruger tells the riveting story of how workers assumed political control in St. Louis, Missouri. Kruger examines the roots of the St. Louis Commune--focusing on the 1848 German revolution, the Paris Commune, and the First International. Not only was 1877 the first instance of a general strike in U.S. history; it was also the first time workers took control of a major American city and the first time a city was ruled by a communist party.

Book Italy and the Cultural Politics of World War I

Download or read book Italy and the Cultural Politics of World War I written by Graziella Parati and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italy and the Cultural Politics of World War I dialogues with the variety of texts recently published to commemorate the Great War. It explores Italian socialist pacifism, the role of women during the conflict and a dominant cultural movement, Futurism, whose leader, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, glorified war and enlisted in the fight. Other soldiers created documents about the war that differ from the heroic and virile endeavor that Marinetti placed at the center of his works on war. Italy and the Cultural Politics of World War I pays attention to the representations of the soldiers through an analysis of their letters, dominated by descriptions of the terrible hunger they suffered. In contrast, popular film absorbed the cultural lessons in Marinetti's writings and represented soldiers as modernist heroes in comedies and dramas. However, film did not shy away from representing cowards who could only be baffoons and fools in propaganda films. In another medium, the concern was to publish texts that would serve the fighting soldier and inform readers about ideological and historical motivations for the conflict. The publishing industry supported national propaganda efforts. Only socialism could endanger anti-war publication, but after its initial opposition to the conflict, socialists occupied a neutral position. Italian socialism still remained the only European socialist party that did not renege its pacifism in order to embrace nationalism and the war, but it was also not in favor of actions that would sabotage in the Italian war industry. ltalian socialism is only one feature of Italian culture that was dramatically changed during the war. WWI impacted every aspect of Italian and of European cultures. For instance, as an essay in Italy and the Cultural Politics of World War I explores, the war industry needed workers. The solution was to bring Chinese men France to contribute in the war effort. After the war, they moved to other countries and in Milan, Italy, they founded one of the oldest Chinatowns in Europe, dramatically changing the human landscape of Italy as they later moved to other Italian cities. Italy and the Cultural Politics of World War I supplies essential research articles to the construction of an inclusive portrayal of WWI and Italian culture by deepening our understanding of the transformative role it played in 20th century Italy and Europe.

Download or read book Labor Versus Capital in the United States written by Louis Patsouras and published by . This book was released on 2019-08-13 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labor Versus Capital in the United States is a companion volume to Karl Marx and Other Socialists: Problems of Socialism, The Fall of Communism and a Proper Socialism/Ecology, published by Authorhouse. Its main focus is to describe the state of the class struggle between the principal contemporary antagonists: the working class / lower middle class versus the upper middle class and the richest 1 percent in the United States of America. Specific chapters involving the current state of affairs in the struggle between labor and especially big capital include "Increasing Economic Concentration," "Working/Lower-Middle Classes and Poverty," "Social Welfare," "Great Recession," "Unemployment," "Taxes/Budget/Politics," "Left vs. Right and the American Labor's Historical Odyssey," "American Socialism," "Labor/Socialism and Religion" (which should be noted was presented as "Mystery of Religion" in Karl Marx and Other Socialists), "A Proper Socialism/Ecology," and finally, "The 2016 Elections." Throughout the political arena, the economic struggle between labor and capital plays out--both privately and publicly. This work, and its companion volume, attempts to chart past and current courses where, under present capitalist structures, capital has an increasingly obvious and undermining advantage in all spheres of human existence.

Book The Tragedy of Social Democracy

Download or read book The Tragedy of Social Democracy written by Sirvan Karimi and published by Fernwood Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-01T00:00:00Z with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tragedy of Social Democracy is about the rise, fall and future of social democracy as a politico-ideological force, a force that was believed would democratically transform capitalism into socialism. Instead of democratizing capitalism, social democracy was itself liberalized by capitalism. Why has social democracy gravitated into the magnetic field of neoliberalism? Who can be blamed for such a tragedy? Can social democracy reverse its political and ideological eclipse? Numerous books and articles have been written on social democracy, and its political viability has continued to be the subject of debate among left-wing intellectuals. In The Tragedy of Social Democracy, Srivan Karimi sheds light on the innate structural vulnerability of social democracy to progressive degeneration. Karimi theorizes the transformation of social democracy and establishes a structural linkage between its rise, ascendancy and subsequent decline since the theoretical raid of neoliberalism on Keynesianism in the 1980s and highlights certain public policy measures that are indispensable to the social democratic renewal that is being debated among socialists and social democrats.
