Book excerpt: A comprehensive and accessible battle-by-battle account of the Kargil war by an Army officer who witnessed it. Early in May 1999, when word came from a shepherd searching for his strayed yak that some mysterious men in black clothes were clambering around on the frozen hilltops of Kargil, no one could have anticipated that it would be the precursor to a full-fledged armed conflict between India and Pakistan. Over the next several weeks, the Indian Army responded with courage, focus and immense professionalism to craft a comprehensive victory, recapturing all the posts that had been occupied by stealth by the Pakistani Army. This Himalayan showdown is brought alive in these pages through the words of a veteran Indian Army officer who was present throughout the conflict and, for the first time, recounts both his own experiences and the stories of the heroic soldiers who fought and won fierce battles from one peak to another. He narrates the individual and collective acts of bravery and the astute military strategies that won the war for India. Containing detailed maps, eye-witness accounts and photographs, The Kargil Victory is a thorough, inspiring and accessible book for all those who want to know the real story of the Kargil War.

Book excerpt: In May 1999, the Kargil insurgency was still being viewed as a routine affair. No one quite understood the magnitude of the situation. However, it soon emerged that infiltrators had captured high-altitude posts vacated by Indian soldiers during the winter months and thus had a tactical upper hand, while the Indian Army struggled with intelligence. For the next month or so, Capt. Anuj Nayyar and the men of 17 Jat went on various reconnaissance missions in the boulder-strewn Drass sector where enemy troops had set up base. They fought relentlessly in a gruesome battle for two nights in July, before securing the peak that was critical to the success of Operation Vijay and India's victory in Kargil. Amid heavy artillery and mortar fire, they destroyed four enemy bunkers and neutralized tens of infiltrators in close combat. During the attack on the fourth bunker, the twenty-three-year-old captain was hit by an enemy rocket-propelled grenade, dying instantly but saving the lives of fifteen men in the process, who eventually finished the mission and hoisted the Indian flag on the peak. For motivating his command by personal example and going beyond the call of duty, Capt. Anuj Nayyar was awarded India's second-highest gallantry award, the Maha Vir Chakra, in 2000. This is his story.

He belonged to the second battalion of the Rajputana Rifles. It played a crucial role in defending Point 4590 - an operation during which it lost twenty-three soldiers. One of the fallen heroes was the twenty-five-year-old Captain Kenguruse, who led his men barefoot into combat in temperatures of -10 degrees Celsius. Kenguruse was posthumously awarded the country's second highest gallantry award, the Maha Vir Chakra. Even so, his story remains relatively unknown. On the occasion of the War's twenty-fifth anniversary, Neha and Diksha Dwivedi, daughters of a Kargil War hero themselves, come together with Kenguruse's brother, Neingutoulie, to tell us who Nimbu Saab was, about his life in uniform and beyond, and the act of bravery in which he lost his life.
